TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

Series of interest to kick off the week:

Nats go to Pittsburgh for four games (Mon-Thurs) Scherzer may (or may not) be back sometime this week.

Cardinals & Brewers square up in StL (Mon, Tues, Wed). Brewers start the series 2.0 games in back of both the Cards & Cubs and dead even with the Blue & Orange.

Philly @ Fenway for 2 games (Mon, Tues). The Phightins complete the three-way tie in the standings (NYM, MIL, PHI)

Marlins @ Braves (Mon, Tues, Wed). A sweep wouldn't be surprising - although they did split a four game last week.

Cubs hosting the Giants (Tues, Wed, Thurs). Cubs are 2.0 games ahead of us, Giants 1.5 behind.

Yanx in Oakland (Tues, Wed, Thurs) for the start of a trip that will later take them to the Dodgers and then the Mariners

And it looks like Chris Sale will NOT need TJS. Simple inflammation is the diagnosis.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

The Nats behind Strasburg, up 1-0 heading into the 8th, have just had their pen cough up a four-spot to the (still batting) Pirates.

Fernando Tatís, Jr. is likely out for the season with lower back issues. Sucks for many reasons, among which is the fact that the Padres have four games remaining against SF and nine against the DBacks. So we're big Padres fans for the next six weeks.

It does make Pete something close to a lock for ROY.

That cuts out Alonso's nearest competition for Rookie of the Year.

It'd be nice for the Mets to beat up on Mike Soroka just to be sure.

So Strasburg was at 0 Runs / 4 H / 1 BB / 6 K / 94 pitches when he was pulled after the 7th last night.

The result for Pittsburgh in the 8th: Single - Wild Pitch - Walk - Bunt Single [out goes Wander Suarez, in comes Danial Hudson] - Sac Fly - 3R HR

Why are these managers seemingly so anxious to get to their pen? Particularly THAT pen?!? It's reminiscent of Matz in Atlanta last week when Lugo melted down,

except that here Davey Martinez needed six outs from that crew with no margin for error. So they wound up serving up a four-spot before recording even a second

out. Plus they don't have anyone there as good as Lugo (or at least as good as Lugo usually is).

In Boston's 3-2 loss to Philly at Fenway last night the Sox had two runners thrown out on the base paths in the 9th inning.

Bogaerts followed his leadoff double by trying to cross over to 3rd on a grounder hit in front of him. Then a pinch-runner gets doubled off 1st on an infield liner

to end the game. Really dudes!?!. No wonder you're 57 games in back of the Yanx.

Kershaw became the Dodgers all-time winning lefthander with his 166th career win. Had been tied w/Koufax (who of course did it all by age 30).

Also Claude Osteen - 147. Fernando - 141

Phrases you don't often read: "MLB issued a hard warning to its players this week: Stay away from gas station sex pills."

It seems that some players are buying these things. Either that or are simply claiming to have used them as a means to cite the reason behind recent

positive PED tests. At least two players have recently made such a claim (players in question not revealed) according to a memo obtained by ESPN.

'No, I didn't take any steroids ... it must have been those erection pills I picked up at the Route 66 Gulf Station!!'

Wait, you mean those pills aren't always pure (Who knew?)! And, Double Wait, ESPN covers baseball! (Who knew?)

And of course leave it to the Post to work the phrase 'Stiff Penalty' into their story.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

Wednesday night:

- Phils beat Sawx for the second night in a row.

- Nats romp over Pirates

- Braves, predictably, stomp on Marlins

- Snakes lose to Rox

- the Brewers are up on the Cardinals (5-3) but they're also in an 8th inning weather delay

- and the Cubs & Giants are in the midst of a wild one. At one point it was 6-2 Cubs but currently it's 11-10 Giants, top 8th at Wrigley.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

The Angels may become the first team in the modern era without a single pitcher reaching 100 innings, and the first since 1919 to have nobody make at least 20 starts.

Felix Pena, at 96.1 innings, is out for the season.

Griffin Canning, at 90.1 innings, just got shut down for the season.

Trevor Cahill is at 87 innings, but is in the bullpen and has been mostly terrible.

Tyler Skaggs threw 79.2 innings.

Andrew Heaney, at 64.2 innings, does have a shot at both marks if he can get eight more starts in. (He has 12.)

Either way, whoa.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

That's just stunning. And of course their big-deal pitching signing from last year hasn't pitched any innings this season: Ohtani

Trout's just out on an island with that team.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

Pirates have flat-out released catcher Francisco Cervelli

Cervelli hasn't played in the majors since May, but has recently started rehab starts in AAA and claims to be free of concussion symptoms.

The likely landing spot is considered to be Atlanta (they're seemingly picking up everyone) as a replacement for the inured Brian McCann

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

A's sweep the Yanks out west. They lead the AL Wild Card (quick: name five Oakland A's) and right now are only six in the loss column behind the Astros in the West.

Remember this feeling A's fans as you bullpen your way to a loss as the road team in the AL Wildcard game.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

This sweep was certainly meaningful for the A's who are basically in a three-way dead heat (w/TBR plus the non-winner of CLE & MIN) for the two WC slots with, as mentioned, an outside shot still at the division.

However the next time that franchise wins a series that's meaningful to the Yanquis will be the first. And that goes for the Twins as well.

Heck even the Rangers, who won just one game out of ten over three post-season series vs MFY in a four-year span (1996-1999) managed to finally get over that hump in the 2010 ALCS (4-2).

But both Oakland & Minnesota are still waiting on that front.

Bad news: Nats won this afternoon

Good news: it was the Cubs they beat so it's closer to a wash for us

Bad news: Phils jump out to a 7-0 lead in Miami

Good news: The Marlins just scored 7 in the bottom of the 3rd to tie it

So who wants an easy 'W'? ... yeah not so fast there Valasquez

Fucking Cubs are a juggernaut at home until WSH shows up and then they lay down and die like the pieces of shit they are.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 19-25

WSH gets the Orioles tonight and tomorrow, part of the 4 games they get with the O's every year because of geographic proximity. This is the same reason why the Mets play the MFYs 4X/season... despite the big difference in quality between the teams.
