8/21 Indians v Mets Stroman & Plutko

OK, I see that it is August. A great time for a winning streaking by beating an AL playoff team three times

Adam Plutko is a gas can

Let Citifield rock.

Re: 8/21 Indians v Mets Stroman & Plutko

Since I've never heard of him, and I suspect many of you haven't either, here's a quickie bio on Adam Plutko (which BB-Ref suggests is pronounced PLET-ko rather than PLOOT-ko)

27 y/o from Upland, CA. 11th round draft pick by Cleveland in 2013 out of UCLA

ML debut in 2016 (2 games) but then no majors again until 2018 [17 games/12 starts]

Called up in mid-May, 12 starts since; 5-3, 4.67, 1.19. Not a high-K guy (5.3/9) but, like Bieber last night, hasn't walked many this season (1.4/9) but gets bit by long balls (2.4/9)

So basically he's been one of the guys filling in due to the injuries and trades on that staff (Bauer, Carrasco, Clevenger, Kluber) but without the pedigree to suggest he'll be a whole

lot more than that.

I also just noticed that Tyler Clippard is on the Indians (I had no idea) and active at the moment and is actually pitching quite well [2.64 ERA, 0.86 WHIP]. And, with him, if the game

ever gets too quick Tito can bring him in in order to slam the brakes on.

Re: 8/21 Indians v Mets Stroman & Plutko

Yeah, friends in funny uniforms for this series include Clippard and Ollie Perez in the pen, Kevin Plawecki behind the plate.

Outfielder Jordan Luplow is the great nephew of early Met Al Luplow. While the GM in my head will always be Mark Shapiro as long as Moneyball is in circulation, the actual GM is Mike Chernoff, son of longtime NYC radio executive Mark Chernoff, who supervised the Mets relationship both as programming director with WFAN and now with WCBS.

Former Mets catcher, catching instructor, and first base coach Sandy Alomar, Jr., coaches first now for the Cleves. Met from 2013 Scott Atchison answers the bullpen phone. Valentine-era pitching coach Dave Wallace is a special advisor.

Y'know, if announcers are going to tell us how getting runners in from 3rd w/less than two outs is a "lost art" (Keith just did it here but he's hardly the only one) it would be

nice if they'd provide some evidence that it's actually the case. Are modern percentages worse as compared to previous eras? Maybe, but I have a sneaky suspicion that

such a claim can't be backed up by data.

Maybe. But there are also fewer 160 lb middle infielders who had trouble getting the ball out of the infield.

And, if things are really down these days, just tell me what the numbers say. Don't take it personally but

I'm not taking your (meaning: announcers) word for it just because you say so.

Best BA in MLB since the ASB ... so, no.

So the Injuns IW'd Alonso following the Sac Bunt (1-out/runner on 2nd) which was followed by Conforto essentially switching places with him on the non-GiDP

And then seeing as how Conforto eventually scored the winning run, I'd say that their strategy of putting the winning run on base pretty much backfired on them.

Yup, hadn't hit a fair ball all night (K, Foul-out, K, K). And it's not like you're walking him to get to a LHB to face the lefty Hand (well, I guess they were

w/Conforto but they still had to face at least one more batter) Instead they had to face the leading BA in the second half and a guy who kills LHPs

Aug 22 2019 06:53 AM
Re: 8/21 Indians v Mets Stroman & Plutko

To me, the real mindblower is that Conforto's hard grounder to first didn't turn into a game-ending double play.

It would have been a tough turn, but in a situation where a double wins it, a single ties it and puts the team in a great position to secure the win, and even a productive out scores the tying run, and even a strikeout leaves them with one more chance — heck, a bouncing curveball could tie it — against a questionable defense, Conforto did the one thing that could cut the Mets legs out from under them: a hard grounder right to an infielder.

And again, nothing was automatic there, but that the Mets screwed it up but survived (and prospered!) because the Indians screwed it up worse suggests that ours is not the team playing their heels here. And that's never not a cool feeling.

Oh yeah, the game.

I was there last night, and it was fun. The crowd wasn't nearly as electric as the Nationals series, but not bad for a Wednesday. I have no idea who Plutko was, and his ERA didn't suggest he should be dominating the way he did. I may have muttered Jeff Suppan, something something. And then whoa, here comes Oliver Perez!

The HR in the top of the 10th was really deflating. It looked like one of those "juiced ball" swings, that just kept carrying. But as soon as Rosario led off with the double, I knew we were at least going to tie the game. When Ramos reached on an IF single, I knew we were winning.

Probably the third Greatest Win of the Year to date. Not "third-greatest," but the third time we're in Greatest territory. I thought the second game of the doubleheader sweep of the Marlins that pushed them past .500 was the Greatest. I think I have to disagree with you there.

The Friday night game against the Nationals was the Greatest. And for me, it's not particularly close. The Mets coming home after that great road trip to get themselves back in contention. The Nationals coming to town. That game being the first game against a "good" opponent. If we lose there a lot of the naysayers "you only beat bad teams" who follow with "I toljuso". Down two runs, and then that killer tack on when Turner scored on the wild pitch. Then magic. Just unbelievable.

And for me, it was even more special. I listened to that ninth inning in the car with my family. We were coming back from a wake. My friend's father passed after a battle with cancer. We were somber to begin with, then getting into the car and finding that they were losing didn't help. We all groaned when Turner scored. Nearly drove off the road when Frazier hit the 3 run jack. We arrived at our garage before Conforto came to the plate, but everyone knew there was no chance we were going in. We waited on the street outside the garage then when he walked it off. I think the parking attendant has never seen a family so excited to drop off their car. Ran inside and watched the entire ninth inning on DVR.

Last night, I was at the game with clients. Two of them are big Mets fans and were into the game, but when we celebrated I found myself wishing I was at home to enjoy it together.

There is no topic I'd rather have spur good-natured disagreement than, "Which was the greatest win of a year increasingly crammed with them?" And I'll happily take the runners-up home after the dance every night of the week.

Thing I loved here, all personal aspects aside (genuinely sorry for your friend's loss), is this is after the Mets were generally believed to have peaked. Reality was allegedly setting in when they lost three in a row to Washington and Atlanta. Well, Cleveland ain't no tomato can and suddenly we've won four straight, it's almost two weeks later, and we are more than alive and kicking. Also, just an unbelievably tense game, I thought, one that exploded in ecstasy when it was over.

Again, your smileage may vary.
