IGT 9/4/19 Get the Hell Away Game

Mets at Nats, 1:10 matinee. It really couldn't get any worse than yesterday. I'm driving to Atlantic City for work this afternoon so I'll be listening on XM (home announcers, sadly).

They're five games out right now. Here are five gimmes: 1) Last night 2) Giants 1, Mets 0 on July 19 (seven scoreless for deGrom, Mets get a double and two singles and lose in ten when Jacob Rhame loses on a Dom Smith error in left field) 3) Braves 2, Mets 1 on August 23 (seven for deGrom, one run, but Mets get six hits and Familia gives up a run in the top of the 14th) 4) Reds 1, Mets 0 on May 1 (seven scoreless for deGrom, Mets get two doubles and three singles and Diaz gives up a home run to Jose Iglesias in the top of the ninth) 5) Phillies 7, Mets 2 on July 5 (seven innings, two runs, 10 Ks for deGrom, but an Alonso home run is our only offense and Diaz gives up five in the top of the ninth)

The loss in LA. The three straight losses to Philly capped off by the Segura walkoff. The rain game where Alonso convinced the umps to play and then Diaz blew it. The Diamondbacks game. Good to see that YouTube joins those networks (four-letter) who think that shrinking the screen to about 1/4 of its size* so they can show the guy being interviewed which they obviously believe is considerably more important than the game which they essentially begged you to tune into in the first place. And by 'good to see' I mean I hope the exec who ordered it gets into a car wreck on his way home tonight. * You brain-dead folks do realize that most folks are already watching this on a shrunken screen, right?

Only one run but also nearly four innings worth of pitches (58) just to get through inning #2 Even if the next couple of innings go well we're going to be into the bullpen early.

This crew is talking about everything but what's happening in front of them. That long half-inning while they had Max Scherzer wired up for the interview, as annoying as it was, provided a sense of relief, as Scherzer was following the game better than the booth.

McNeil's day so far: 3U, 3U, 3U Despite his two (seeming big at the time) hits yesterday, he's been rolling over a ton of pitches lately. Haven't seen that all year from him until now, or for his career for that matter (although season & career are essentially the same thing w/him).

A quickie inning from Wheels, so he's now only about an inning behind a pace you'd like to see (7 innings worth of pitches thru 6) instead of two or more behind like he was earlier in the game. That's tough to do and somehow manage to hold the opposition to just one run.

It takes the occasional adjustment to keep the WCBS audio (via mlb.com) synched up with the YouTube video ... but the results are well worth it.

Yeah, let's walk the bottom of the order on base in front of the top of the order guys!!!! In addition to Diaz's HR rate, which I mention earlier, Familia's BB rate is more than double this season as compared to last (7.3/9 vs 3.5)

Win Tuesday's game and that's 5 of 6 from Philly & Washington and everyone's feeling good about it. Instead, we're still down about the whole week and are going to be here 20 years from now as old men (or even older men) cursing about the time we blew that 6-run 9th inning lead during a pennant race to the Nationals (before they left for Portland). Oh well.

Man, how tight did they look in the ninth? [list] [*]Wilson fielded the comebacker cleanly for the first out, but hooked his throw to first pulling Alonso into the baseline. Had the runner been fleet and busting it, it might have been an ugly situation. [*]Davis' basket catch for out two looked like he was trying to catch an egg with a glove that wasn't broken in. [*]Rosario fielded the ball cleanly, then stepped on the bag and threw to first, indicating either (a) he didn't know how many outs there were, or (b) more likely, just wanted to add an extra out to be safe in case somehow the runner heading to second was called safe, even though he had the guy by a mile. Or perhaps (c) he knew how many outs there were, but didn't quite fully trust himself. [/list]
