IGT 9/15/2019: LAD @ NYM — See You Next Month

In his postgame interview with Ed Coleman, Rajai Davis referred to Dodger pitching as what the Mets will see “when” they get to October. Who are we to question such veteran CAHNfidence? Hence, here's your (potential) NLDS Game Three matchup, Wheeler vs Walker. Or Zack vs Buehler. Befitting its marquee value, look for it six hours later than normal on a channel ill-suited to deliver Mets baseball. Rajai's certainty notwithstanding, tonight's game amounts another 1-game series. Let us sweep it before considering whatever else might follow.

Last night's swing may well have been the difference between Rajai making a post-season roster and Rajai just going along for the ride.

Survived it and he better go out for the 8th. The bullpen can only get 3 outs since Lugo's not available. Too bad ESPN's missing a good game. OE: Wheeler's done. Wilson pitches the 8th, who pitches the 9th?

You don't know what was being said in the dugout (Mickey said deGrom was spent after 7 last night) but I would leave Wheeler in for the 8th. 97 pitches is on the light side for 7 innings (105 is about the norm). But, sooner or later, this team is going to need important outings from Diaz and/or Familia. Yeah you don't want to, but if it's one of them vs one of the back-end guys ...

They have no bullpen. I would have at least let Wheeler sniff the 8th there. He was at 96 pitches and finished the 7th strong. First sign of trouble you pull him. Oh well, meaningful games in September at least.

And with the soft schedule you'd have to think the September record improves. I think they have one more run in them, which I hope will be fun. But ultimately they'll fall short by a few games. And instead of seeing the energy this fan base had for a few weeks and doing the right thing, the Wilpons and Brodie will use this second half push as justification for not doing much this offseason.

I just thought that, for much of the year, this was as good an offense as the Mets had ever put together, with not a single guy you didn't mind seeing starting on any given night. But they sure didn't squeeze league-leading numbers out of them in the end — which is a pity. I don't want a team that puts more time in the batting cage than anybody else, although that's admirable. I want a team that takes the edges they're given and exploits them for 1,000 runs per year. I continue to think their shortcoming isn't personnel, but philosophy. Did you know that if Brandon Nimmo had enough plate appearances to qualify, he'd be fifth among active players in OBP? That's with his big problems early this year and everything factored in. Everybody ahead of him pretty much already have their Cooperstown tickets punched. And he still ha room to get better. Why in the world would anybody bat that guy seventh?

I really think you have to look at Calloway in this game. Lifting Wheeler is one thing, but to my mind the bigger sin was Panik. I can not for the life of me think that he was the best option. After the sweep I thought we'd still need to go 12-4 to get to the playoffs. since then we've gone 1-3 - so if we go 11-1 we'll still get there .... and they *can* but they won't.
