10-0 or 9-1 still has a good shot at the wild card!

Root for LA to clinch best record. That gives the Braves nothing to play for on the last weekend. (Although Bobby Cox played for keeps in 1998 in a similar situation).

Yeah, they pretty much need to run the table to even have a chance. Put ya plays 'em one at a time.

Re: IGT 9/20 Mets v Red deGrom v Castillo

It'll be the Mets first look at Aristides Aquino, who got called up from Louisville on August 1 and instantly went into maniac mode, scattering baseballs all over the National League. He's got 41 RBI in his first 47 games, which has got to be some sort of record — at least, a post-Ted Williams record. He hit ten homers in his first 16 games. Eleven in his first 17. Alonso has probably clinched Rookie of the Year, but this guy is going to get a taste. Cool name, too. Maybe he's half Haitian.

Oh, yeah. The Reds non-tendered him this winter and he became a free agent, but everybody slept on it, and he ended up re-signing with the Reds.

Aquino has been raking with Eugenio Suarez who I believe has 28 knocks since the break.

Castillo is pretty lights out but any pitcher can get cranked in Cincy's Coors east.

If the Mets are just playing a single Red, I've GOT to like their chances.

Re: IGT 9/20 Mets v Red deGrom v Castillo

Reds are 4th from the bottom this season at scoring runs but also 4th from the top at preventing them which, in that offensive environment, seems both tough to do and out of character

per recent Cincy tradition (or even not-so-recent Cincy tradition - it wasn't the Big Red pitching machine after all). Their RS/RA (675/668) suggests they should be about .500 but

are in fact not very close (72-81) so they're either being unlucky or something isn't clicking somewhere.

They're .500 in September (9-9) but during a stretch where they almost exclusively played competitive teams: StL (1-1), PHI (2-2), ARZ (3-3), SEA (1-2) CHC (2-1)

One of their big questions going forward is whether Joey Votto is becoming an old man real fast or if this is just a one (really, two) year dip.

After OPS'ing right about 1000 (980) for the nine-year run from 2009 (his 2nd full season) thru 2017 where, at age 33 he led the league at 1032, he dropped to 837 last year and

to 782 this season. And the main culprits are what they might have expected NOT to diminish with advanced age, his ability to get on base and, in this era, HR power. But his OBAs

from 2017-19 have slipped from .454, .417, and then .360. And after 36 HRs in '17, he has just 27 combined in 2018-19 (12, 15). In THAT park and in THIS era while still playing

virtually full time (right about 1,000 ABs), that's not a good sign.

He turned 36 ten days ago and, you guessed it, they owe him more than $100 million dollars over the next 4-5 seasons (thru 2023 plus an option/buyout for '24). And while he's a good

1st baseman, he's still exclusively a 1st baseman in the non-DH (aka: proper rules) league.

No one (aside from Tom Brady and Keith Richards) is immune from the age bug.

Re: IGT 9/20 Mets v Red deGrom v Castillo

Weird thing about Canó: A lot of Mets frustrate me with their propensity to chase balls breaking outside the strikezone. Still others are confoundingly prone to chasing the low ball. There's even the Rey Ordóñez out there on occasion who likes to waste his swings on balls up above his shoulders. But Canó loves chasing balls in on his hands. If it gets left even a little over the plate, he can rip it, but as long as the pitcher keeps it inside, he either fouls it off or taps it down to the right side.

Strangely, he never seems to break it back.

I think Joey Votto's got a good season or so left in him. I just think he's been carrying that lineup so long, it can be demoralizing. Age and demoralization mak for a potent cocktail that's hard to drink and then get out there and play. If he gets traded to the Yankees, he'll get on base at a .600 clip while hitting 45 or more homersz.

Re: IGT 9/20 Mets v Red deGrom v Castillo

Oddly, between Suarez & Aquino -- plus the rookie Senzel and Derek Dietrich -- this is the one year where he doesn't have to carry the load nearly as much.

But if you're the Reds, you'd best be hoping that he's got more than ONE good season in him.

And, yeah, if he got traded to the Yanx he'd have 45 HRs by mid-May, 8 or 9 via check swings.

What, it's not like he's vulnerable to HRs, or that the batter he was facing, Suarez, is good at hitting them, or that a HR there would make that an entirely new game.
