Postseason Roster Trivia

Gwreck
Aug 26 2019 11:41 PM

Vaguely inspired by the discussion about Ruben Tejada's last appearance in his first Mets tenure being a postseason game.

14 players have appeared for the Mets in a postseason game without having ever played in the field. Who are they? Hint: Ruben Tejada is not a correct answer.

Danny Heep was the Mets' first-ever DH in Game 3 in 1986, but he also started Game 2, in left field.

Re: Postseason Roster Trivia

Bobby Bonilla, of all people.

Is that the answer? Boy, I should've known that. If I really pressed myself, I think I would've got Bonilla. I obsessed over his mere presence on the 1999 post-season roster. He was practically a cripple, so banged up was he by the time the post-season arrived. If Bonilla ever got on base --and I don't remember if he did-- Valentine woulda hadda burn another sub to pinch-run for Bonilla -- which was especially a problem if I recall, because Piazza was being held together by shoestrings and scotchtape. I always suspected that "management", ahem, forced Bonilla on Valentine for the playoffs, against Valentine's wishes. Wasn't Luis Lopez in the doghouse at the end of that season because he punched he who no one was allowed to mess with-- the Great Exalted St. Rey Ordonez? Because Lopez woulda given Bobby V. the flexibillity he coulda used.

Bonilla is correct. He was 1-4 with a walk in five plate appearances.

In NLDS game 3, he walked as a pinch-hitter. He was not pinch-run for and went first to third when the next batter, Henderson, singled, and then scored on an Olerud single. He was the first of 6 runs to score that inning.

In NLCS, he hit for Mahomes in the top of the 5th and was not pinch-run for. The next batter struck out to end the inning.

Bonilla was on the postseason roster for the same reason Robinson Cano will be on this season's if one exists and Cano is somewhat able.

Bobby Bo delivered a pinch-hit in Game Six of the NLCS and was not pinch-run for (nor did he advance).

Helpful hint because one unimaginative manager seemed likely to not deploy his available players to the fullest extent of their utility.

After Cano hits nine home runs in twelve games down the stretch to clinch a spot, they'll *have* to keep him on the roster.

Both correct. Woodward doubled in his sole appearance during the division series. He and Ty Kelly are two of three Mets with career 1.000 postseason batting averages. (A fourth, Juan Uribe, has a career 1.000 Mets postseason average but it's a little lower overall).

This could be a different trivia question, and with a significantly increased degree of difficulty: Mets on active postseason rosters but who never entered a game. It's happened in every postseason year other than 1999 and 2000.

I can think of one particular Met who pulled that "feat" twice -- two different seasons. He'd be the patron saint of this category.

Got you covered. Plawecki is the only other player to miss in 2 seasons, although missing the wild card game is a lot different than missing two series that went the max number of games.
