Re: Boilers

I assume for discussion sake here boiler and furnace is same thing? Do

most you have gas heat? We use heating oil for both heat and hot water.

We got a new oil-fired hot water heater about a year ago that is incredibly

efficient and it pretty much never runs out of hot water.

Re: Boilers

Boilers are needed if you use hot water radiators; they're common in older homes. You can use either a gas or oil furnace (or coal, for that matter).

The furnace heats the water in the boiler, which is then circulated. They're also used for steam heating, but I pretty sure that's not used in a residential setting.

I know they're expensive (I buy boiler replacement insurance as part of my servicing each year -- it's 70+ years old). From what I gather, if they fail, you have leaks, though they can last a very long time.

Re: Boilers

So the boiler is in the furnace here I guess if what you're saying is right.

My original thought before asking was the two seem interchangible to

most people (including my oil guys) for the most part.

We have radiators in basement and upstairs and cast-iron baseboards

on ground floor.
