Good news: Two loathsome teams - the Braves and Dodgers - were eliminated.

Bad news: can only eliminate one of two this round...

Re: IST NLCS 2019: STL vs WSH — Red State

I'm not feeling any animosity for the playoff teams. Not even the Yankees, who I'm rooting against only because some of my friends are Yankee fans and I don't need to hear the good-natured razzing that'll come my way if they win, or even make it to the WS. What? I'm supposed to hate the Dodgers because five seasons ago, Ruben Tejada got Utley'd? This doesn't resonate anymore with me, because by this logic, I'd hate every team. Oakland took the WS from the Mets in '73. The Cubs Sutclffed the Mets and Dwight Gooden in '84. Ed Ott upended Felix Millan so if the Pirates made the playoffs, I'd hafta hate them too. What? I'm supposed to hate the Nats because they won more games than the Mets. That's on eff and Jeff. That's who youse should be hating. The Nats are doing their jobs. The Wilpons aren't. I don't get this anymore? The Braves are loathsome? Why? What are they supposed to do? Lose on purpose to the Mets so the Mets could make the playoffs?

Besides, and Mets fans don't really wanna admit this to themselves, it was at best a brave but foolish play by Tejada made necessary by a very bad play by Muffy, as much as it was a dirty play by Utley that led to that tragedy

I've always maintained that. And I'm still not convinced that it was a dirty play in the first place. I think that the league over-reacted only because of the severity of Tejada's injury, figuring that if Tejada could could get hurt like that, tomorrow it might be a marquee player or superstar. I also totally agree with the Dodgers' defense that if the roles were reversed, David Wright would've done the exact same thing that Utley did. It's called playoff baseball.

Re: IST NLCS 2019: STL vs WSH — Red State

If the Nats are going to get solid pitching from Sanchez the cards could be in a heap of trouble in this series.

On the other hand, he's been known to wind down the 3rd time through the lineup which means the bullpen, and with Hudson not available (I can't

believe a team with post-season aspirations didn't enforce the 'No sex in January' rule) this still could get interesting.

This whole 'hitting' thing doesn't seem to be high on the Cards' to-do list these days.

It's not good to be 14 innings in and still have your combined number in the 'H' column still be singular.

2d straight series where the Nationals benefited from a manager's devotion to a once-great pitcher. I thought the STL manager promised to "fuck up" their next opponent. Maybe he meant that he was going to fuck up a big moment.

Remember when Marcel Ozuna was a good fielder and thrower as well as a good hitter, one who used to bedevil the Mets at various aspects of the game ... What happened to that guy?

He's still a decent hitter w/power (though a cut below his best seasons), but he's clearly neither the fielder nor thrower that he used to be.

How does that happen, seemingly so drastically, by age 28?

Re: IST NLCS 2019: STL vs WSH — Red State

He's played full seasons, or nearly so, each year of his career [148, 159, 148, 130 games played 2016-19].

And the way the announcers were talking, going back even to the previous series, it's not like he's currently not fielding/throwing, it's that he simply can't do so anymore.

Tonight he came in for a sliding catch on a ball that he had a ways to go on but one that was also in the air forever. He never quite got there, though I'm sure in past years he

would have, so he went into a slide for it instead only to have it clank off his glove for a two-run double.

In a few short years he's gone from good CF'er to a below-par corner guy at an age when he should be in or near his prime.

And since I wrote the earlier post he failed to pick up a ball at his feet on the first try ensuring that the runner from 1st could score easily.

Re: IST NLCS 2019: STL vs WSH — Red State

In the meantime, having only slightly to do with Ozuna's poor play tonight, the rout is on to the point where even the Nats bullpen probably can't blow it.

And it's also nearing 2-1/2 hours in and they're not yet through the 6th inning ... so I'm calling it a night.

Here's the funny thing. We have to start rooting for the Nationals starting tonight. Why? Because the only team in baseball to blow a 3-0 lead is the Yankees. I don't want that to ever change.

So Washington has to close it out. If the Astros end up pulling this out, we can hate Washington again. But as of right now, the Cardinals are dead to us.

13 - the number of runs scored by StL in the first three innings of their final game vs Atlanta

33 - the number of innings in which they've batted since that outburst (6 + 9 + 9 + 9)

2 - the number of runs they've scored during those 33 innings (one of which was unearned)

That play by Ozuna was so bad that it actually looked like he waited until he was sure that the pitcher fielded it cleanly ... and only then did he make his move towards 3rd

Good for Ryan Zimmerman, given that David Wright vouches for him.

Good for Charlie Slowes, who grew up a Mets fan and followed his broadcasting dream to the Nats booth in 2005 and has done a nice job there ever since.

Good for the memory of my friend's wife's uncle who bought season tickets as soon as the Expos moved to town, stayed loyal for the rest of his life, which sadly ended before he could experience this, and was super gracious to me Metwise always, but especially in 2015 and 2016.

That's not a lot of "Good fors" which says something about the team, the franchise and their fans.

Slowes is a Fordham grad and is a good announcer even though he obviously dumbs it down for his audience.

Zimmerman is still playing and Wright isn't which is a shame. I liked the way each would decide to smooth out the dirt around 3rd when the other had reached 3B so they could talk.

Good for my crazy Nats fan Jenn who has had season-tickets since Day One and has terrorized the Ticket Office since Day Two (and achieved results as her season are now next to the WSH dugout).

Still, congratulations and F them. At least the Series is about to start and I won't have to see that disgusting logo around town for much longer... oh crap!

Re: IST NLCS 2019: STL vs WSH — Red State

Simply by making the LCS the Nats left the list of MLB teams without at least a 'final four' appearance in the last twenty seasons (or, in their case, Ever!).

The number of teams failing to reach an LCS during that time remains at four as taking out the 1999 season shockingly (to some) puts The Braves onto that list.

The other three, oddly all from the NL, are the Padres who fell off the list last year as their last NLCS (and WS) appearance was in 1998, the Pirates (1992), and Reds (1995)

If the Nats were to win the WS they would become the 13th different champion in the most recent 20 seasons. Either AL team winning will keep it at 12

I believe that the '19 Mets were as good as WSH (12 of 19, should have been 13). It's irrelevant as they got hot at the end while the Mets were giving away that Sunday game to Philadelphia (and cooling off). Rizzo, their GM made 3 BP moves at the break, including Hudson who has become their closer, while Brodie didn't do anything for the bullpen. As much as I dislike Rizzo, he operated within the Lerner's budget, signed Hudson and Cabrera while everyone got healthy at the right time, hot at the right time, and everything broke in their favor (such as Roberts' brainfart/Kershaw's choking/Josh Hader's ineptitude).

I'm not bitter, I'm fine.
