Astros front office douchery from ALCS celebration emerges on WS eve.

And in the center of the room, assistant general manager Brandon Taubman turned to a group of three female reporters, including one wearing a purple domestic-violence awareness bracelet, and yelled, half a dozen times, “Thank God we got Osuna! I'm so f------ glad we got Osuna!”

The outburst was offensive and frightening enough that another Houston staffer apologized. The Astros declined to comment. They also declined to make Taubman available for an interview.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:08

The first pitch for the remaining games is slated for 8:07, so adjust your lives accordingly.

Scherzer's not long for this game.

At this pitch count you'd want to have at least 16 outs (5.1 IP) by now. Instead he's notched just 10 outs (3.1)

Re: IWST 2019: WSH vs HOU — Two TONs o’ Fun

This kind of article was inevitable.

https://www.cjr.org/first_person/washington-world-series.php

The Nationals, now of the National League, head to the World Series today. The joy is palpable, non-partisan, and has squeezed (temporarily) an ounce of optimism out of an embattled press corps. When the Nats, as they're known, secured victories earlier in the playoffs, reporters high-fived on the campaign trail; Andrea Mitchell and Judy Woodruff (my wife) tweeted excitedly; and The Atlantic's Ron Brownstein flew in from California for a game. “At a time of daily news eruptions, it's particularly a tonic for the folks working in and covering politics,” Jonathan Martin, chief political correspondent for The New York Times, says.

At Nationals Park, Peter Baker, the chief Washington correspondent for the Times, takes his spot in the low section between home plate and the dugout. A section over is the oracle of baseball-loving political columnists, George Will. “There's no more unifying force in established Washington journalism than the Nats,” James Carville, the political operative and commentator, tells me. Carville, who's flying in from New Orleans for the first championship home game, on Friday, sits next to Luke Russert. A fat cat offered Russert thousands of dollars above list price for his tickets. He, of course, said no. Russert wondered aloud to his mom—Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair—who he might take to the game. She had a quick, emphatic response: “Moi.”

Natsmania has affected the whole town. There are signs everywhere; customers at Starbucks are wearing Nationals hats and shirts. “It's a funny window into how Washington works,” Michael Tackett, deputy Washington bureau chief for the Associated Press and a Nats fanatic, says, of the World Series. Tickets to Game Four of the division series (when the Los Angeles Dodgers might have ended it) didn't sell out; there were some five thousand empty seats. Now, for the championship, standing-room spots are going for seven hundred dollars apiece; upper deck seats for fourteen thousand. There's a mad dash to get in. “Every fixer is making a deal,” Tackett explains, “every connection leverager.”

Re: IWST 2019: WSH vs HOU — Two TONs o’ Fun

Inevitable? You don't mean to suggest that a political town has front-runners in it, do you?

At least we know that George Will actually went to baseball games prior to three weeks ago. The others mentioned I'm not so sure.

I remember years ago -- almost 25 at this point -- watching a political roundtable show and at one point the discussion took a side route into Cal Ripken's record-breaking game

which had occurred just a few days earlier and, whattaya know, EVERYONE on the panel had finagled their way into Camden Yards for that game.

Bregman's MVP hopes are fortunate that the votes don't include post-season play because he's been a total non-factor in the Yanqui series plus Game 1 tonight: 3 for 18 coming into tonight (2 singles, 1 double) w/1 RBI

and tonight he added nothing more than a couple of key strikeouts.

The other thing that stupid asst GM (whoever he is) did was to re-publicize the backstory of Osuna, only now with a national audience now paying attention.

I know I had forgotten about his previous troubles when he was with Toronto (we were so busy mocking Chapman the other day despite he maybe

being the less violent of the two closers) and now a bunch of people who never knew about them now have Osumna's history spelled out.

Springer actually ran harder to 1st in his previous AB HR that wound up out by the choo-choo train than he did on the one that stayed in the park.

There were all kinds of odd base-running/throwing in that 8th inning.

- Preceding the Springer AB, PH'er Tucker (on 1st) snuck in to 2nd when CF'er Robles threw behind him on a routine fly out. Not sure what Robles was thinking there, especially with

a two run lead.

- Tucker, who doesn't look to be all that fast, then decides to tag up again on the Springer ball to RCF in case it's caught ... but the only upside to that is getting to 3rd w/2-outs which

is barely an upside at all. The Nats, Robles again, then rushed the relay throw in back to the infield which went wide and had to be tracked down otherwise they might have had a shot

at Tucker trying to score

- Springer claims he couldn't have reached 3rd and didn't want to pass Tucker on the base paths which is ...umm, bullshit. If you start running up on him then just stop running. But he

clearly wasn't looking at his runner while he was bunny-hopping his way to 1st.

- Tim Kurkjian said he thought there was a "better than average" chance that GS can reach 3rd on that play which sounds about right to me. Not only was the ball in the air for a while

but then there was an odd hop and the wild relay. But he didn't hit sprint mode until the ball dropped and he was nearly at 1st base so that blew any chance.

- And then I think the following Fly to RF (assuming the old predetermined outcome thing) probably scores him if he's on 3rd and the game is tied although Eaton throws well.

Re: IWST 2019: WSH vs HOU — Two TONs o’ Fun

A season of watching Pete Alonso watching his 430-foot home runs leave the ballpark without doubt had nudged my “RUN TO FIRST BASE FIRST!” instinct incrementally to “well, maybe these guys know in their bones when it's going out,” but then something like Springer being a spectator happens in the frigging World Series and it's a mystery to me that these guys don't run first, watch the replay later.

Rickey Henderson, a pioneer in the art form, had a situation like that in 1999, landing on second instead of on third (and landing on first instead of second in 2000 as prelude to his release). Hell, I've never understood why Todd Pratt stopped at first to see if Steve Finley caught his NLDS-winning home run, never considering simply running to second in case the ball ticked off Finley's glove and stayed in play.

It's also bullshit because Springer has no idea how the play's gonna unfold. So he should be running as hard as he can from the get-go unless he's more than 100% certain that the ball's leaving the park. This is so obvious and it's really appalling that the game is played like this at its very highest level and in a game where the stakes are also the highest. I wouldn't accept this from Junior High School kids playing an unorganized pick-up or choose-up game. I was hoping for the ghost of Gil Hodges to appear to pull Springer out of the game, World Series notwithstanding.

Could you imagine an NFL wide receiver breaking out into his choreographed touchdown celebration 15 yards before he reaches the end zone?

Oh we've certainly seen variations of that: guys so anxious to spike the ball that they do so at the 2 yd line and lose both the points and possession; guys who got caught from behind because they

were stylin' into the end zone (see: Lett, Leon in SB); Mark Gastineau failing to see the fumble he just caused because he couldn't wait to go into his arm-swinging routine (also playoffs IIRC); etc.

The problem with all of this stuff is that you can get away with it but you have to be right.

I think Springer figured it was either going to be a Homer or a catch and got surprised when it turned out to be neither.

This has been going on for decades and will continue unless MLB: cuts the amount of commercial time between innings (eliminating just one 30-second ad per break saves 18 minutes--you can do more of the split-screen ads to recoup the revenue) and starts the games at 7 ("What about the poor West Coast!" "STFU, 2/3 of the country lives in the eastern time zone and I'd rather miss the beginning of a game than the end.") Maybe the new 3-batters per reliever rule will help.

Actually more like half that: 1/2 minute per break = 1 minute per full inning x 8, then either one break during the 9th inning or none if the home team is ahead.

And while your general point isn't wrong no matter what the exact saving -- Selig talks often of how his major accomplishment was 'raising the revenue' but neglects to mention the cost (in

number of eyeballs) of his actions -- the commercial time hasn't changed in a number of years now and yet game times continue to go up. Games times in the regular season in 2018 was

an improvement on 2017 but that turned out to be a short-term fluke as 2019 lost those gains and more despite a supposed tighter adherence to the clock and reduced mound visits.

Re: IWST 2019: WSH vs HOU — Two TONs o’ Fun

They should care because the model they've chosen -- increased money in the short term in exchange for interminably long games and ceding full time-slot control to the networks -- isn't sustainable.

Depressed ratings lead either more immediately to 'make-goods' where MLB rebates the network -- either directly or through reduced rates in future transactions -- and then down the road when the

next contract comes up for negotiation. And that's before you even get into whether you're essentially pre-alienating future fans which in turn could lead to reduced revenue.

The problem is that the Nats had a lengthy winning streak with those unis so they've stuck with them for the entire post.

Maybe that'll end after tonight.

This series, so far, has been an 0-4 'anti-sweep'.

WOW!!

I hadn't realized that Ross was even on the roster until he showed up in the middle of Friday's game: a tidy 2 scoreless innings, one hit/19 pitches.

He only pitched 3 times in September (including one on 9/2 where we hit him up for 7 runs in under 4 IP) and Friday was his first appearance in this year's post-season.

This seems to be a trend across sports. I think the justification is to sell the idea that post-season games are different and therefore any results from them could only be the result of cause-and-effect,

and that games on their networks are different and therefore a separate category from 'ordinary' games. ABC (and later ESPN) has long quoted stats and records from Monday Night Football as a

separate entity. One of the more common was to say how good Oakland was on MNF as if the fact that, back when they were a good team and consistently a top draw, they used to be scheduled on

MNF about every third week is seemed but the idea that they were on MNF because they were good rather than the other way around was never mentioned because it would ruin the angle they were

trying to sell.

I'm not quite sure what they expected Torre to do. I don't think I want to live in a world where some exec in the stands is empowered to overrule calls on the field.

As it was the umps were already too indecisive: they made the call right away but then discussed it for five minutes AND THEN went to the headphones for five more even though it's not a reviewable play.

It was a judgement call: Make one and stick to it!

If the Astros fire Hinch after the way he managed this game, Brodie should tell his friend no. I'd rather have a novice manage the Mets than this dope.

This was the key inning to get through and then he had Osuna and Cole but no, he had to show that he was in control and do something.

Why exactly did they pull Greinke, again? A HR to the other team's best hitter, and a pitcharound walk to the second-best?

I'm hoping that the Texas Rangers want him. He's a Texas native (as we've heard a few times) (I know that Dallas is far from Houston), the Rangers stink but they have a new ballpark so maybe they'll want him to help filling it up.

Of course last winter they already had Machado & Harper measured as well ... or so we heard.

And then they had Gio Urshela [889 to 796] and (until the very end of the season) Mike Tauchman [865 to 882] out-OPS those two high-priced guys who wound up instead on losing teams.

From SI, Gerrit Cole channeling Dennis Miller signing off for Weekend Update (“I am outta here!”)

Twenty-two of the men on the World Series roster are under contract for next season, but that number does not include Cole, who warmed up in the sixth inning but never entered the game. He already seems emotionally uprooted from Houston; when media relations head Gene Dias asked him to speak to the assembled press after the game, he hesitated. “I have to do it?” Cole said. “I'm not an employee of the team.” Eventually he acquiesced. “As a representative of myself …” he said. He appeared for the interview wearing not Astros gear but a cap bearing the logo of the agency that represents him, Boras Corporation.

During the World Series prior to his prospective free agency kicking in, Edgardo Alfonzo made an appearance at the Mets flagship clubhouse store on 42nd St. The lines were not prohibitive, but management tried to enforce a limit on how much signing he would do of any one person's stuff. When one among us in the group of three I came with dared to return to his table for a second signature despite the rules saying it was a no-no, that person used a highly apologetic tone for daring to flout boundaries.

“I don't work for them,” Fonzie declared as he signed away. He may have been referring to the retailer, but I had the sense he was talking about his soon to be former employer.

Hinch's thinking was to bring Cole in to protect a lead/close out a game but not necessarily when behind. Also, being a starter, the thought is that he needs more warm-up time and would be more in line with

his usual pattern if brought in at the beginning of an inning rather than in the middle and possibly with men on base.

I think it was the 5th when Cole was warming up (maybe after a one-out walk) but then sat down again when Greinke righted the ship and ended the inning with an extremely low pitch count (59 thru 5)

Now Houston still did have a lead when Greinke was pulled but the one-out HR (making it 2-1) and then a walk happened quickly so that's when he went to the more quickly ready reliever Harris.

Unfortunately for the 'Stros, Harris went 2nd pitch HR then 3rd pitch single, at which point you've got neither the lead nor a clean inning that Hinch wanted for Cole.

You don't have to agree with any of that, but it seemed like that was Hinch's mindset based on the situations and some comments he made both before and after.

It's a self-congratulatory kind of town.

What's amazing, particularly to long time Washingtonians, is how the Nationals plus the Capitals Stanley Cup from two years ago has pushed the Redskins to [CROSSOUT]second[/CROSSOUT] third hand news status,

something that was unthinkable not all that long ago. Not that the Redskins didn't help push themselves down to 'below the fold' territory, but a sure sign of spring in DC used to be when

the Washington Post sports section cut back to only 85% Redskins coverage. They're lucky if they can scrounge that much now in-season and on game days.

Strasburg had a 72-hour window so that he was going to declare, and that he did so now, was pretty much a given. The prevailing thought is that he's overwhelmingly likely to stay

and that this maneuver is just a contractually abetted way to get a raise and/or a longer deal, which of course is the whole purpose of negotiating an opt-out in the first place.

Re: IWST 2019: WSH vs HOU — Two TONs o’ Fun

No reason for him not to opt-out. At worst, WSH will offer him the same money and length so nothing will have changed but maybe someone else (please, especially outside of the NL East) will offer him more and longer. Can't hurt to find out after such a great Series.

It turns out that that your question is addressed in the rule book, and you would have been right not to call that.

5.09 Making an Out

(a) Retiring the Batter

A batter is out when:

(11) In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire's judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball;

Rule 5.09(a)(11) Comment: The lines marking the three-foot lane are a part of that lane and a batter-runner is required to have both feet within the three-foot lane or on the lines marking the lane. The batter-runner is permitted to exit the threefoot lane by means of a step, stride, reach or slide in the immediate vicinity of first base for the sole purpose of touching first base.
