Imagine a baseball tournament. It's a 64-team knockout bracket with each team representing a U.S. state, territory, or armed service division. Eligible to play for the team is any player — major league, minor league, retired, college, schoolboy, AAU — that was born in that state or territory. (We're assuming money and logistics have been sorted out to allow the very best to participate.) The only exceptions are:
•
the Native American team, which would allow any player born on a U.S.-based reservation or holding an American Indian Card (basically, self-identifying Native Americans), and

  •
the military teams, which would be open to any player who has served (which unfortunately wouldn't include a whole lot of current pros), provided they didn't receive a dishonorable discharge. Also, students and graduates of the service academy would be eligible for that branch's team.

  •
We've got to get 64 teams out there.

Teams meet for three-game elimination series, so you'll need your whole pitching staff, and things might get a little wild after the brutal eliminations of the bottom half of the bracket in Round One.

The top-ranked California team may look like this:

Manager Torey Lovullo is a lucky man. Because California is California, that's a team of all current big leaguers, all of whom have at least one All-Star Game behind them, most with more than one. The only exception there is Travis d'Arnaud, but I bet if I looked hard enough I could find another active All-Star catcher from the Golden State. Also, some dudes (Trevor Bauer, I'm looking your way) may have an All-Star pedigree but are coming off a crap season. But that's my first pass.

Here's the seeding. Pick a team and make us a 25-man roster for that team.

Remember that we're sticking to players by birthplace, at least for now. I don't care where they went to high school, went to college, live now, or where they first kissed Becky Ann.

Yeah, I think the idea would be "What if there was a tournament this offseason?" So Ty Cobb probably wouldn't be much of an asset to the Georgia team.

So at today's level of skill, or roughly their career level? If I choose David Wright for the Virginia team, am I getting vintage 2006-08, or am I getting bad back, out of shape, hasn't-been-in-a-real-game-in-years David Wright?

Just as an example, how does one fill a roster under your parameters with players

from Guam when only one player from Guam played MLB ball in 2019? I didn't check

MiLB, but my guess is we'd still fall quite short.

I tried to do the 41st ranked Blue Hens but ran out of 2019 MLB players after SP Jon Duplantier, INF Joey Wendle and 1B Paul Goldschimdt.

P Chad Kuhl made the club but will miss the tournament with an injury.

Minor leaguers. Collegians. Ambitious amateurs. They're all out there.

But I recommend you don't take Guam right off the bat. You have a job to do. Work with Pennsylvania or Tennessee or something.

Is there a single link somewhere that shows the birthplaces of minor leaguers? BBR has it for major leaguers.

Also a suggestion? If you're dealing with a small state (like JCL's Delaware Blue Hens) maybe make an allowance for college players who were born elsewhere? For instance, let's say University of Delaware had three players from Texas. Those three guys are likely not cracking the Texas team, but maybe they could play for the Delaware team? One of the little Solos is an undergrad at UD, maybe she could be JCL's assistant GM and do some scouting.

Also, I'm real curious to see what Chris Capuano's got going that makes him want to come out of retirement at 41.

Tim Locastro, outfield, Arizona Diamondbacks, Auburn, NY

Travis Demeritte, outfield, Atlanta Braves, New York, NY

Sean Murphy, catcher, Oakland Athletics, Peekskill, NY

I didn't include a coaching staff. Here's where I go a little off the board.

Manager: Joe Sottolano, Minisink Valley NY.

Joe coached at Army for about 16 years, and was ridiculously successful, with multiple Patriot League championships and NCAA appearances. He had close to 400 wins--again, this is for Army--but was removed from his job due to a sexual harassment claim. Anyhow, I got to see him up close when he coached my son's little league all-star tournament...the guy has an unbelievable baseball mind. And, with his college background, he is used to playing and juggling his roster in a tournament scenario. But you say, how can a guy with no MLB experience skipper a team of big leaguers? That's where his staff comes in, all with big league playing experience, and three former MLB managers.

Bench coach: Joe Torre, New York, NY

First Base coach: Lee Mazzilli, New York, NY

Third Base coach: Walt Weiss, Tuxedo, NY

Pitching coach: Frank Viola, Hempstead, NY

State and Team Ambassadors: John Franco, Brooklyn, NY and Ed Kranepool, Bronx, NY

I've had two very similar comeuppances in this thread: First, I was surprised that Reggie Jackson was coaching for the New Jersey team, because in my mind, he's so Oakland, that I always just assumed he was born there.

Then I was surprised that Rickey Henderson was coaching for the Illinois team, because in my mind, he's so Oakland, that I always just assumed he was born there.

Beyond that, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be happy all day today, because I just learned there is a town called "Minooka."

I went back and linked all the players to their Baseball Reference pages so that I don't have to update affiliations when the inevitable trades & promotions occur. I got birthplaces from Baseball Cube, but B-R lists different towns for some, but I'm not changing them.

    Re: Pick a Team

Here's the team born to be creamed. The tournament's equivalent of The Kent State Golden Flashes, or the Washington Generals. I hope they have a few friendlies scheduled, because it'd take a major cataclysmic event to keep them from falling fast and hard to California in Round One. Here is your proud-but-doomed team representing the United States Merchant Marines.

Taking the field to the battle cry of Acta non Verba! these players are all current or recent members of the Merchant Marine Academy's baseball squad, and if you go get your reading glasses, you'll see that they aren't all the same person. The propensity at their usual level to enjoy a handful of players who both hit and pitch allows for some flexibility in roster construction, and that's a secret weapon they look forward to deploying. And that sort of versatility is good, because one imagines a parade of pitchers coming and going on the mound.

Also, watch out for Rumanian-American twins Brad and Jeff Suciu out of the bullpen. Another desperate strategy they have lined up is to get the two of them warming up at once and blowing the opposition minds. Or perhaps having one come in two innings after the other, forcing California to argue that "Hey, didn't this guy already get removed from the game?!" so vociferously that all or most of them end up getting ejected.

Manager Michael Notebaert acknowledges that this strategy may be a stretch, as the photos suggest that, while they may be twinkies, the two brothers aren't identical at all. The last remaining strategy involves prayer, and maybe firearms. Wish them luck.
