It's a Great Night for Hockey

Starting a new thread for the new fall season.

Rangers won their opener last night. Islanders start tonight vs. Caps.

Rangers look like the trendier pick for a good season, as do the Devils, according to what I have read. I dunno why though.

Between flying Finn Kakko and the Panarin/Trouba cohort, I'm looking forward to watching the Rangers for the first time in a few years, if nothing else.

Islanders look just good enough to lose a bunch. About 10 minutes of strong offense tonight but no goals but for a lob at the net that hit 4 different Cap skates. Otherwise they played a hard fought shutout.

As much as I dislike the Nationals, I despise the Caps more.

The Isles and Devils have had a tough time beating them for years. (I don't give a flying rat's rectum about that other team in town)

MIKA ZIBANEJAD FOR PRESIDENT

Re: It's a Great Night for Hockey

I'm still too young a fan to hate other hockey teams. And I love the name Zibanejad.

Happy to see the Isles play a lot better last night, they scored 4 on a wiped-out Edmonton team but could have been 8 easily if the tendy wasn't having a terrific night.

Speaking of Zibanejad the Islanders now have Derek Brassard who was once traded for him. That deal seemed to have turned out OK for the Rangers.

Islanders think pairing Brassard with another Frenchie, Anthony Beauvillier, will lead to better results for Bo, who was a disappointment last year.

Re: It's a Great Night for Hockey

Wow, Isles were down 2-zip to cup champs St Louis with 5 minutes to go today, tied it back up in the final minute then win it in OT.

BTW, the NHL changed the rules this year to make regulation wins the first tiebreaker, taking at least a little incentive away from the "play to tie" thing we discussed here last season.

Also today, Islanders debuted RW Oliver Wahlstrom as both Eberle and Cizikas are banged up. He was playing for Boston College a year ago, and was pretty great on the ice today.

Now Isles have 2 19 year olds on the club from the same first-round '18 draft; defenseman Noah Dobson is the other.

Re: It's a Great Night for Hockey

I noticed the other day that their last seven games (and 8 of last 9) were one goal games including including five games decided by OT or SO (3-2 in those games) so, just by that alone, they've been

somewhat 'lucky' during basically the entire second half of the streak.

On the flip side (and fwiw) Hockey-Ref has a 'Simple Rating System' stat they employ that takes into consideration both strength of sked and avg goal differential.

Prior to last night's loss the NYI were on top of the entire league acc to SRS. They've now dropped to third behind only Pitt & Boston.

Islanders have scoring problems some nights but they're practically unbeatable in OT.Last night, Barzal skated around in circles with the puck for 54 seconds, wearing the Vegas D out. When he came back on the ice, instead of chasing him around again they just tripped him leading to the 4-on-3 that ended with a YesYesYes

Easily the worst-played game of the year for the Islanders, and it came against the Rangers.

Isles have been struggling to score all year, but have called up 20-year-old winger Keiffer Bellows, son of "next Gretzy" Brian Bellows (didn;t quite achieve that but 500 goals in a long career).

Bellows has an assist and 2 goals already, including this rocket from an impossible angle last night. Isales still not perfect as defense isn't as airtight as it once was and goalies are scuffling a bit suddenly, but what a shot in the arm for a dead 3rd line.

Re: It's a Great Night for Hockey

Every once in a while there are one of these 'emergency goaltender' stories ... and they're great and all, but I think having to put a regular roster guy into the goal would be at least as much fun.

Somebody on your roster also played goalie at some point in their amateur career so he'd be like your emergency 3rd catcher or designated blow-out game pitcher.

Plus the whole thing has to be a bit weird for the road team having what is essentially an employee of the other side suddenly be part of your team. Not saying he'd intentionally throw the game

or anything (obviously this guy did not) but being forced to use you own guy would just be a cool variation on the position player pitching or having McDowrosco alternate between RF & LF.

'Yeah Frayed but some guy may get hurt! Yes, they might, but they also run that risk every time they suit up in their own position. And it's not like coaches are going to be sticking Crosby

or Ovechkin in the nets in the rare cases when this does happen; we know it will be some scrub: Say Jim, it looks like Anthony Recker is headed to the locker room to strap on the pads!!'

I'd like to see the Isles get a scorer, a guy like Devils' Kyle Palmieri would be a good idea. But there's debate among fans. Most are of course adamant they make a big dramatic move, a minority worry the club is still working toward the"real" future and shouldn't blow that up too soon.

Rangers beat Isles 4-3 in sudden death but only after Isles erase a 3-1 3rd-period deficit including the tying goal with 18 seconds left (and another goal called back on a bullshit interference call). New guy Pageau scores in his first game then racks up 17 minutes of penalties in a show of support for his new teammate who was buried on the ice.

First 10 minutes of this game, without any scoring, was about the most intense hockey I've seen all year, just thrilling.

Overall they played a really good series (except that one blowout) and while not exactly bringing the superior skilled team to its knees made it really difficult for them, and while compromised themselves. Pelech broke his wrist and Cizikas who in normal circumstances is about their peskiest dude, suffered a detached retina, they say now. (dirty secret I've learned about hockey, they don't share injury details in real time or else the players in some demented Canadian code of honor go after those specific body parts).

I loved listening to Emerick; the way he said the word "rebound!" injected this pure excitement into the play. Was a little less thrilling as he got up in years though.

hafta say the guy the Islanders picked to succeed Howie, Brendan Burke, is really excellent. He's a fan you can tell, but flawless in his call of the action and pro enough to get the national broadcasts.

Islanders sacrificed young defenseman Devon Toews to the salary cap, trading him to Colorado for draft pixx. He was solid if not super, scored some goals and usually exhibited a little competitive attitude which was fun to see. Isles feel like they have the D talent coming up not to miss him too much.

Hockey is the toughest sport to do p-b-p and Emerick was nearly perfect at it. In addition to always knowing what to say he always knew what not to say in contrast to most

other announcers these day who seek to put their stamp on every play as if that would make that particular moment forever "theirs". Emerick had no such ego.

One time, following a frenzy of action that only hockey can sustain over an extended period, when a whistle finally blew to stop the action, he went silent for nearly half a minute.

When he finally came on mic again in time for the ensuing face-off, he simply said that the preceding 20 seconds of silence was brought to you by those who needed time to breath again.

He grew up an oddball hockey geek in basketball mad Indiana though these days lives in Michigan. Was, and still is, a big Pittsburgh Pirate fan.
