Modern music

May I just start out by saying I Hate Autotone or Tune or whatever it is

Since I got my little Hyundai Accent in 2012 I've been listening pretty exclusively to Radio Classics on Sirius, which is old serial shows (favorite is jimmy stewart's Sixshooter)

Anyway at the beach I heard a current song I kinda liked ‘Truth Hurts'. Very cute

Last week my granddaughter (now age 6)tells me that's her mommy's favorite song!

So I try to be a little more ‘with it' and ask my daughter what station she listens to and she says WPSU and I have been tuning into it for about a week. She assured me I'd hear it a lot.

So far not only have I not heard ‘truth hurts' but I have heard nothing but head exploding garbage.

So I pick up my granddaughter today after school...'oh I know this song! It's called ‘Me'

‘I know this but forget the name'

Meanwhile I'm inwardly rolling my eyes

When my daughter was six I played John Denver for her...

Play John Denver for the granddaughter, too.

May I respectfully suggest you also play her Exile on Main Street. (no games, not trying to fool anyone - genuine suggestion)

Re: Modern music

Not sure where this is headed but early radio Andy Griffith comedy is terrific

Actually, I still think of Kraftwerk as modern music

Lefty Jr listens to this. It's not accessible for my brain.

If you play this make sure your volume is down low. You'll thank me later.

Oh my. That's some voice. Please say those are not nazi uniforms

My daughter listened to 90s hip hop in high school...not too bad

My son listened to classic 70s rock and nirvana, chili peppers, bob Marley, excellent taste!

But this new stuff 😬

I might try a John Denver CD; it would be a hoot if N suddenly walked around the house singing ‘Calypso' like her mommy used to do!

I'd love to hear Andy Griffith on the radio but they don't seem to ever play that

They're not. But they are German WW 1 uniforms. Sabaton is a band that writes heavy metal songs about famous battles, from the 14th century Danes battling the Swedes to sinking the Bismarck to today. It's about as 'niche' as niche gets. Suffice it to say, it's an acquired taste. But Jr. is an enormous history buff, and he'll be at their DC concert in a few weeks (hopefully with ear protection).

13-year-old Lunchpail is into a punk trio called the Rare Americans (from Canada, natch) and an English indie singer called Barns Courtney.

Former is profane but fun and harmless; latter comes off a little too manufactured for me but the songs aren't bad

He discovered both of them on youtube... I'm not sure he knows what a radio is. I definitely had no idea who either was till he started playing them allatime.

Re: Modern music

"Truth Hurts" is from Lizzo. I've relayed similar sentiments here before, but if you have ears and like good stuff going in 'em, the rest of her oeuvre is worth a look. She's funky, and irrepressible, and slays on the flute, to boot.

Kid wonder Billie Eilish has had an interesting summer, and is very much modern musics, while also containing some interesting wordsmithing and lovely, layered melodies. Her stuff does play with synth-voice-y effects, though, so maybe not.

Like classic R & B/funk, along the lines of Parliament or Gamble-Huff Phillysoul? Anderson Paak is an interesting, newish version of same. Multi-instrumentally talented kid. (See also: Tank and the Bangas, New Orleans natives who come off like a mildly-Cajun, female-centric version of the Roots, and H.E.R., who's more like a Joni Mitchell-Mary J. Blige hybrid.)

Re: Modern music

Yep I haven't delved into any other Lizzo but I've read that she gets her flute into all her work and I love that!

Cracks me up that she just takes up with a pro athlete after a breakup in the song, like THAT ever happens to the average girl :)

Unfortunately, the members of AJR have learned that latter-day branding strategy means you have to come up with goofy spelling for your name so it can appear on it's own in search results, so even if you have a simple concrete name, you have to get weird. If your name is Bossman, you have to spell it Bo$Zman.

The Doors? Live? The Cars? Love? Life would be brutal for these bands if they launched in the web era.

Re: Modern music

You know what those guys in AJR are? They're a sibling act.

You know what their last name is? Well... some guys we follow pretty closely wear it on their shirts.

AJR is an American pop band composed of multi-instrumentalist brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met.

I don't know whether to pledge my forever-allegiance, or damn their eyes for hiding their heritage under a doofy acronym.
