Songs that might make you cry ... or at least put a catch in your throat.

First one I liked best...a tear jerker, all right

Plus what is going on in that picture? It gives me shivers

Everything you thought was right was wrong today? It's an intriguing photo, right? I vacillate between thinking it's a massive dust storm or a simple devastating explosion. Brent Best got under my skin. ... don't know if listening to these with coffee works for me, though. More with evening wine for me, which was when I selected them to share. Try more Patty Griffin if you like sad songs.

Griffiths/Pies was the only artist/song of these that I knew. Only one I had ever heard of for that matter.

Sinead O'Connor's version of Dylan's "I Believe in You" is heart-felt and beautiful.

This one is a Christmas song by the Killers.

It's about a person at the end of their rope -- hence the Wonderful Life references -- prayerfully asking for help. This part is where I get a lump in the throat:

Do you hear my voice?

Do you know my name?

Light my way,

Lift my head.

Light my way,

It's a good video, too.

No idea. But, for the record (album), the only thing I don't like about Slobberbone is their name.

Sinead O'Connor's version of Dylan's "I Believe in You" is heart-felt and beautiful.

This was interesting to me, as I never really fell into the Dylan thing but did have John Wesley Harding. I always liked other artists' versions of his songs better than his own (which includes Jimi Hendrix doing All Along the Watchtower).

Same thing for this one - Just Like a Woman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcV1aaf5Zj0

I have never been without my copy of The Rise and Fall of Honesty since the night I saw these guys open for Glenn Yarbrough in 1968 (confessed earlier to being a folkie prior to falling into psychedelia). And, as a folkie, it seemed strange to me that Dylan never really grabbed my heart like he did pretty much everyone else at the time.

We could probably do a whole thread on Dylan songs where the cover is better than the original!

Could not agree more. But - who shall compile that list? I know I am not up to it but might find a few examples beyond the one I posted. Certainly every PP&M Dylan cover was orders of magnitude better than Dylan's efforts.

well, you could certainly do a thread listing Dylan covers you LIKE better, since that's purely a matter of taste, but to say they ARE better is a matter of judgment and one has to be clear about what your criteria are for such a judgment. Sales? Critical consensus? sure, those are criteria you can turn to, but they go both ways on this question. musical virtuosity? Well, his nasal twang is an acquired taste, much like Springsteen, but i don't see a lot of argument that covers of Springsteen's songs are better than his own performances. And Bobby plays as good a folk guitar and harmonica as anybody, and after he went electric, his backup band was The Band, who were better than those E Street boys. How about most effective interpretation of the lyrics? That's where things get more squishy and vague, but I defy you to list covers that more clearly and effectively communicate Dylan's lyrics than Dylan's performances do. He wrote those words; he knows better than anybody just how to phrase them for maximum meaning and effect.

But of course that's just my opinion; your mileage may vary.

Noting with astonishment how many hundreds of views this thread has had since it became inactive, I wonder why, since there have been no further comments. Is this merely a reflection of activity caused by bots? Interesting.

Ian Hunter you may have known was touring with the survivors of the 1974-era Mott just recently. Another round of those shows have been put on hold however as Hunter is reportedly suffering severe tinnitus and given that he's 80 years old, I think this might mean the end of a long and remarkable career.

I recently read a reprint of Hunter's "Diary of a Rock Star" book which talks about touring the states back then, and whiling away the boredom on obsessive pawn-shop guitar shopping. Charming and funny.

Nope, I had no idea about Ian Hunter and present day activities. All the Young Dudes was presented to me way back in the day (1975'ish) by an acquaintance while we were discussing Thijs van Leer/Focus and Hocus Pocus. Just one of those things that I heard and liked but did not dive into much beyond that.

I found van Leer and Jan Akkerman much more interesting and acquired a lot of their vinyl, none of which survived my many moves, alas. I can get a lot of it on YouTube, which is fine by me.

Hunter's age is always surprising, as he's one of those who broke in the seventies but I hadn't realized had already been a veteran scenester, and so was as old as many sixties stars. Ocasek was like that too.

And Andy Summers is an eighties star who broke late and is actually as old as some sixties stars.

Nick Lowe on the other hand is 70, but he's starting to look like late-stage Burgess Meredith.

It's too bad that that album is so overshadowed by its smash hit Born to be Wild, because that's an incredibly solid release loaded with deep tracks worthy of heavy rotation radio play. I listen to that album all the time. Still.

To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells

From the bells, bells, bells, bells,

Bells, bells, bells --

From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells
. .. Edgar Allan Poe

Yes, that time of year has rolled around again, boys and girls.

Every song, on most of the stations I listen to, has those fucking bells in it.

If I hear "Sleigh Ride" or "Jungle Bells" one more time when I hit the wrong car radio button, I'll snap.

Thank goodness for WCBS-FM and WDRC-FM (Hartford)for staying the course and playing songs I listen to year round.

This could go in Post-Mortem Jukebox (except I suspect there was never a jukebox that had this cut). Criminally insane fretless bass player genius Jaco Pastorius and superlative in every imaginable way genius Joe Zawinul have passed but 86-y-o Wayne Shorter abides. Since I cannot say for certain which of the rotating drummers is in the video, I won't guess.
