Everybody's in the sun except the first lady, who has a pall of shadow over her. She looks like she's phasing in from another dimension.

I must have misheard him, because I thought the president just thanked Hitler.

I don't get it. I really don't. Especially Suzuki. Maybe someone should remind him what xenophobia meant for Japanese Americans of previous generations.

There was a number of them. CNN ran their story while the ceremony was in progress.

Re: Watching Nationals at the White House

Nats fans have generally dismayed me. I blamed the worst of the Phillies fans who, during the Phillies run, traveled frequently to DC, and gave a lousy example to a not-yet-established fan base in how to be an asshole frontrunner.

Nats fans have really showed me a lot the last few months. The Nats themselves — both the organization and the players — are a group I still can't get behind.

Other no-shows included Anthony Rendon, Victor Robles and Joe Ross.

And yes, I can totally get behind a SIGN RENDON, ROBLES, AND ROSS NOW!!!! campaign.

And yeah, I know only one of them is technically a free agent, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do.

I guess the nice thing about the Mets not having won a championship during the Trump presidency is that we haven't had to learn which of our guys would wear a MAGA cap.

Even now we don't have uncorrupted elections. That's how we ended up with him - corruption. They've (the GOP/Putin/et al) gamed the EC (see Gore, Al - another popular vote winner who lost due to EC manipulation/Sandra Day O'Connor/SCOTUS) and won't ever let us get rid of it.

I have another way of looking at it. It's a good thing that the Mets haven't won a championship during the Trump presidency, because then they'd go to the White House and shake his hand, and everything the president touches turns to shit.

Re: Watching Nationals at the White House

Christine Brennan with some thoughts in the very ad-filled USA Today:

[BLOCKQUOTE]When asked about his MAGA move, Suzuki texted USA TODAY Sports: “Just trying to have some fun. Everybody makes everything political. It was about our team winning the World Series.”

Of course, Suzuki was the one who made this political.

I've written about White House visits by sports teams since the 1980s, and I can't remember any quite like this. Most of them, you can barely remember who was president. It was just a team visiting the White House.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2019/11/04/trump-nationals-swing-and-miss-partisan-play-white-house/4160307002/

So, it's "fun" to wear the campaign hat of a corrupt president and doing so isn't "political". Got it. Go fuck yourself.

As Trump's candidacy was percolating in 2015, Dillon Gee and DL'd Vic Black emerged as early adopters.

No WH trip any time soon:

Stroman

Nido (PR)

Diaz (ditto)

Smith

Better-than-average likelihood of "no:"

Thor

Conforto

Lowrie

Gsellman

Better-than-average chance of showing:

Nimmo

Cano

Ramos (just guessing, owing to personal experiences, that he's a big law-and-order, rules-are-rules guy)

Rosario

Familia

Matz (charity work in Honduras... but married to Christian rocker, big on bible study, and seems unlikely to turn down a Presidential invite from anyone)

Davis

Oswalt

deGrom (sadly)

Wilson (Orange County bro, straight through college)

There with MAGA hat on:

Lugo

Wheeler

Re: Watching Nationals at the White House

I didn't pay any attention to this story. This President, I just revile. So were the Nats served the now traditional fast food slop? Holy vomit inducing crapola -- fast food fries purchased hours ago when everybody knows you gotta eat fast food fries within 10 minutes of buying them. I think Trump serves them Whoppers and Big Macs because he's a sociopath and likely looks at pretty much all of these athletes (except Tom Brady and some of the golfers) with extreme scorn and contempt -- and so he gets off on these athletes scrounging down this crappy food which there's a place for in our society, but certainly not at a once in a lifetime visit to the White House. Trump probably views these athletes wolfing down the fast food chow like starved dogs who haven't eaten in a day and a half.

That's my take.

Re: Watching Nationals at the White House

wasn't the fast food thing because there was a food worker strike or something? I can't recall but I feel like the kitchen wasn't open for the NHL visit or whatever.

Centerfield

Re: Watching Nationals at the White House

The fast food was a result of the government shutdown. The White House staff was not around to cater the meal. I imagine that wasn't an issue yesterday.

I don't know if I buy the theory that the fast food is indicative of him looking down on the athletes. After all, Trump is a well known lover of fast food himself. I would guess that once the WH kitchen shut down, his first preference was Whoppers and Big Macs. And I think he is incapable of thinking that anyone would think differently than him.

On Edit:

More on who he looks down on. I don't think he ever thinks about it too deeply. I think he splits people into two categories. People who like him, and people who don't. I think if he had ever been really accepted by the NY elite, we wouldn't have this right wing conspiracy theorist. But the NY elite didn't accept him. Probably because they felt he was too stupid to get their respect. So he kept talking, and tweeting, and eventually he found an audience that adored him in the deep red states. And here we are.

every day there's 7 disasters and security issues but I feel like there was one involving the delivery of his big mac? Or maybe I'm thinking of something about ordering from a specific pizza place in brooklyn to be waiting at the tarmac in JFK? can't keep these things st raight.

It wasnt just a shutdown thing. Several visiting teams got the fast food treatment, including some college teams. And even the shutdown wasnt a legit excuse for fast food. The WH could've ordered out from anywhere.

This is my understanding. I think he CRAVES the adoration of the failing New York Times.

The guy has been openly lobbying for a Nobel Peace Prize for Pete's sake. Sophisticated, educated elites and media elites — he has them all in his Rolodex. Mostly guys who were big in the eighties like Malcolm Forbes that he doesn't know have long since grown irrelevant or died. Lacking that, sure, he'll take the love of the poorly educated. Don't expect him to hang out in your tract home in Peoria, but he'll take your love and money.

Is there any doubt that if he wasn't president when Hugh Hefner died, he'd have tried to buy Playboy Enterprises? Is there any doubt that he looked into it anyway? Is there any doubt that he doesn't know Playboy Enterprises is a failing brand that makes more money licensing it's stupid rabbit head then it does it in print and digital media? And is there any doubt that he doesn't realize that such an enterprise would further alienate him from the New York elite, rather than impress them?

Perhaps I should start exercising doubt more freely, but I think I've got him figured out. If you need to come up with an explanation for his behavior, just try to think of the scenario in which he is revealed to be dumbest, weakest, and neediest. Donald's razor. You won't always be right, but it's the way to bet.
