Yes We McCann Can

I'm seeing buzz on Twitter that the Mets are talking with the White Sox (of the newly minted Grandal) about acquiring their newly superfluous C James McCann. He had a great season (3.8 WAR) after a lousy one (-0.5 WAR) and would be a solid backup to Ramos.

Perhaps McCann can give Ramos some defensive Pointers.

I hope that BVW can work it out.

Mets are thin and farty at catcher in the upper registers of the minors. Mazeika and Sanchez may be candidates to help next year, but I wouldn't expect them to be any more than an emergency hole plug this year. So yeah, muscle up at catcher, and get a guy who can be the starter if Wilson goes down.

This is a far better idea than my first thought after reading the subject heading, which was: What in the hell do we need Brian McCann for, and didn't he already announce his intention to retire?!?

Now's the time for good GMs to get together with one another.

I hate that this topic title made me think of Shop Rite.

Last year's offense could be a mirage; he's never shown that level of slugginess at any level, and it's tough to see any evidence of change-in-approach from the batted-ball data. That said, even if his power blacked out, he'd still be a positive glove-side addition.

you mean the .359 BABIP ain't for real? shocker.

He's projected for 83 wRC+ and less than .300 OBP. I mean, the Mets do need a backup catcher. Could do a lot worse.

Re: Yes We McCann Can

He did show some degree of slugginess before knocking 12 & 13 HRs in approx 350 ABs each in 2016 & 2017

Those years translate into a 137 & 162 Isolated Slugging, not quite the 187 of this year but league average-ish at worst and of course everyone's power was up this year.

What upped his standard Slugging Average in 2019 was that his BA was up some 20 to 50 points above his career norms (likely the BaBiP factor ^)

And what this all basically translates into is a good defensive catcher (or so they say) with a low BA and occasional pop ... iow: a backup catcher straight out of central casting.

That he'd be coming at a backup role after being a more-or-less starter over the last couple of seasons [PAs = 373, 391, 427, 439 from 2016-19] could be a good thing.

Turns 30 in mid-season 2020 so should be at or near his prime.

No we McCan't Can't. He re-signs with Chisox to play behind Yasmani Grandal.

A Chicago Question: If I was to use the word "Chisox" in the environs of Guaranteed Rate Field, would it portend my doom?

Not sure, my friend White Sox fan referred to them as the Sox (the red variety did not matter in his universe). I think that to him Chisox would have seemed redundant, but not offensive.

I never knew there were two catchers named McCann. At least they aren't trying for this guy: https://www.nydailynews.com/resizer/3USH-RtRDBRSeGEj_WSslca68Zs=/800x533/top/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-tronc.s3.amazonaws.com/public/42PHXFPP7LORWZU2L553GBTDGU.jpg>
