Mars Attacks! gave me a new appreciation for Slim Whitman music and Tom Jones' acting chops.

here's my dirty dozen (chronologically):

ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEETS FRANKENSTEIN - the first and best horror comedy

FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS - Polanski's darkly comic/erotic spoof, featuring his soon to be murdered wife

ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES - Vincent Price's ghoulish tale of horrific revenge (like the Price sequel, DR. PHIBES RISES, and his similar THEATER OF BLOOD) are creepy fun

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE - Brian DePalma's cult classic, with a fun score by ... Paul Williams?

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN - Mel Brooks' loving spoof; amongst his best ["put...the candle...back!"]

AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON - Landis' perfect blend of horror/comedy

GREMLINS - Joe Dante's sick-joke Xmas horror fun

EVIL DEAD II - my son made me re-watch Raimi's comic remake (basically) of his first EVIL DEAD, its really funny

SHAUN OF THE DEAD - Zombie spoof; first and best part of Edgar Wright's "Cornetto Trilogy"

ZOMBIELAND - shockingly good, with an all-star cast (and classic Bill Murray bit);

CABIN IN THE WOODS - co-written and produced by Joss Whedon, Drew Goddard's startlingly scary satire of "evil dead" type movies takes a twist and goes where no movie has gone before

ANNA & THE APOCALYPSE - Just another musical/comedy/horror Zombie Xmas movie, from the UK.

another dozen as honorable mentions: ROCKY HORROR, CREEP SHOW, RE-ANIMATOR, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (86), LOST BOYS, TREMORS, SCREAM, SLITHER, FROM DUST TIL DAWN, DEAD ALIVE, THIS IS THE END, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

I haven't seen ZOMBIELAND II yet, but i suspect it might bump ANNA off the list, or just make it a "baker's dozen". I didn't include GET OUT, because i don't think its really very comic, nor GHOSTBUSTERS or BEETLJUICE because their not really horrific, but otherwise all 3 would make the list (bumping PHIBES, ANNA, and E.D.II down to honorable mentions, and moving CREEPSHOW, DEAD ALIVE and WHAT WE DO off the list entirely). I also didn't include any of the "so bad its good" horror films (from AIP or otherwise), even when they were intending to be bad [i.e., ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES, LITTLE SHOP (60)]

Looking at my list, the 1980s are overrepresented, which could be because the 1970s-80s were my prime movie-going years and so i may have discounted more recent films.

Re: Funny Halloween

Zombieland2, in my opinion, was the same as Zombieland one. Including the Bill Murray thing.

There were parts were maybe it got a little too meta but the tone and humor and even the plot were pretty on par.

Vic's list is pretty much mine on performance-enhancers, although I'd probably find a bit of room on there for GREMLINS. Does AMERICAN PSYCHO count? One of the few film-better-than-the-book situations I've ever encountered, with some truly hilarious moments (think Christian Bale waxing poetic on the pleasures of "Sussudio" or competitively bitchy conversations about off-white cardstock tones) in between all the nude chainsawing and whatnot.

Yeah, but Lost Boys?

I'll go for Ghostbusters. Busting makes me feel good.

Also, I'll throw a dime into the well for The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Maybe Maximum Overdrive, too.

GREMLINS is already on the list (#7, with a bullet). And in my particular definition of "horror", AMERICAN PSYCHO wouldn't count as it lacks the supernatural element. It wouldn't be on my list, regardless.

As for LOST BOYS, its a guilty pleasure. And its my list. But good on you for GHOST & MR. CHICKEN. Don Knotts was an underrated comedy genius. And i'm only 1/2 kidding about that.

I support the mentions of the EVIL DEAD movies, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, CABIN IN THE WOODS and GHOSTBUSTERS.

I would also submit SCREAM for the way it pokes fun at the horror genre in general.

Re: Funny Halloween

I miss TCM. In my area, it's been hijacked from my package (since sometime last month with no warning) and now requires an additional $120/yr to have it plus a bunch more sports channels I guess I don't already have. What this has caused is for me to see what I can watch on Amazon Prime that I already pay for. It turns out, quite a bit. Once I have watched the present movies I've DVR'd (including the last two seasons of Better Call Saul in prep for season 5) and the November Sumo tournament is over, I am likely to drop my Comcast package to the lowest possible one that still includes NHK. And give up DVR. I find in retirement I have too much to do to spend a lot of time glued to the tube. Odd. I had thought when I retired that I'd catch up on all the movies I'd missed while working but it seems I can't stop running around like a kid in a Willy Wonka candy land.

That said, I have my own DVD of Dr. Strangelove and watched Duck Soup a few weeks ago. Never the Groucho fan, I love Margaret Dumont, Chico, and especially Harpo. Also, Grand Sumo Highlights are posted on YouTube. I have to go back to the Bay Area in a couple weeks, during the November tournament, and want to watch the matches I missed when I get back home.

Re: Funny Halloween

Was there any comic duo where one guy carried as much of the act as Abbott and Costello?

Laurel & Hardy were 50/50. Lewis and Martin, maybe 75/25. Lucy and Ethel 70/30. But Abbott & Costello had to be about 5/95. And they STILL were damn near the kings of them all.

Great question! I never liked Laurel & Hardy though - too mean spirited on Hardy's part for my taste. Agree re M & L. I would give Lucy and Ethel more of a 60/40 (personal POV), but, A & C was mostly C. You'll get no argument from me on that.

Re: Funny Halloween

A & C were a product of their medium. They started out in vaudeville where every comic duo needed a straight man to set up the gags. Martin and Lewis came close, but most of Dean's percentage was accounted for by singing. Rowan and Martin came close to this model. I don't think any of the others mentioned did.

Burns and Allen. George would do his comic monologues, but when he was on stage or camera with Gracie, he was the straight man and she got the majority of the laughs.

Abbott was the bigger star when he first teamed with Costello. So much bigger that he was able to insist on and get a 60/40 split of the earnings in his favor. That's also why the act wasn't named Costello & Abbott. This was always a thorn in Costello's side, all the way to the very end. Only after the duo hit Hollywood after vaudeville and then radio, was the split changed to 50/50.

Nothing could really be done about the name of the act: by the time they hit Hollywood, they were too well known to change the name of the act.

The box office story could be true. They definitely teamed up for good because one of the original partners in one of the acts was, for some reason, a no-show.

Re: Funny Halloween

I don't know what I was up to, but a month or two ago, I discovered a strange collision of worlds — a young and hungry Lou Costello getting work as an extra, appearing as a ringside spectator in Laurel and Hardy's THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY.

https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2019/11/costello.jpg>

This was long considered a lost entry in the L&H canon, but by regathering the reels from different sources, and even using parts of different prints of a single reel to stitch together a coherent edit, the film has mostly been saved from annihilation. I found a version of the restored film on YouTube (funny!) but now it's been taken down over rights issues. I have no problem with that, but it's kind of funny that I can see stuff on YouTube that debuted on TV last night, but somebody is managing to take the time to protect a 92-year-old film that was believed lost to history.

Lou had hitchhiked out West and after a few months of sporadic work as a stunt man or extra, talkies arrived, and he headed back East to hone his act. He wouldn't re-appear in Hollywood for about 13 years, but holy shit, there's the best part of the best second generation Hollywood comedy duo sneaking into a movie with the first generation's best.

Back to funny horror. Saw another one for my list last night, Lake Placid.

One of Betty White's most memorable roles ( and lines)
