Coming Soon-ish: Queensboro FC

A new pro soccer team will debut in Queens in 2021. They'll be playing in the USL Championship's Eastern Conference (second-tier US League) and while their home games will be played at York College, they will have select matches at Citi Field.

USL Championship teams can be affiliated with an MLS team (like a AAA baseball team) or can be independent. Hopefully this team has no affiliation with NYCFC (MLS), which, in turn, has nebulous ties to Manchester City. Former NYCFC and Man City player David Villa is part-owner so who the hell knows. Would be great if they can carve out their own identity and fanbase, and flourish in the USL. No one goes to watch affiliate matches. Like, no one.

Questions: Wonder if they would implement blue and orange in their color scheme? Wonder why they didn't just call it Queens Borough FC? Do you give any shits about this development at all?

Fun fact: Our USL Championship team in New Mexico has Krane Shares as the sponsor of our away kits. This is the same ownership group behind Queensboro FC. I kinda hope that means we'd be done with them. Here's what could be a sneak preview at what the boring advertisement would look on a QBFC kit:

Your USL Championship team from Queens that no one gives a shit about now has a brand identity.

From the press release:

The centerpiece “Q” symbolizes the borough's namesake and origin and is the central icon of the crest – the heart of which stands for the diversity of Queens.

The shield surrounding the “Q” connotes the ideals of inclusion and protection and is a reference to royalty and tradition. The top supporting edges of the shield represent the community – the most important part of the club.

The bold and athletic logotype “Queensboro FC” is a custom typeface called QBFC Plaza, based on historical typography at Queensboro Plaza.

The crown above the “Queensboro FC” logotype represents the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, a designated landmark, and each of the 11 elements of the bridge corresponds to the number of players on a soccer field.

The color palette of the crest is centered upon one of the most iconic colors of NYC's subway system – QBFC Purple – shared by the 7 train connecting Queens to Manhattan. Complementary colors include dark and light gray, evoking the urban landscape of New York City.

Their kit sponser will most likely be Krane Shares (see previous post) so I can almost envision a kit.

The million dollar question: Yall vibing the vibes?

Whoah. That's some sort of violet fuscia thing they've got there. I don't know how far that'll take them, but bold and different.

Yeah, because just the thing we need right now is a bunch of guys running around with a big 'Q' on their shirts.

I'm a former and now again resident of Queens and am filled with weird purple pride.

I do think pro socka could do great here, that stuff about the great diversity here is very true and palpable in the neighborhoods, a lot of potential fans

I had the same thought. It would immediately become Donald's favorite team.

I don't think the president is going to jump at a violet fuscia colored team playing a sport derided by the right as intrinsically and subversively foreign, explicitly making a push for diversity and non-English-speaking audiences.

He'd try to redline the team.

The Lunchpail, who probably belongs to the demo they are aiming for, is a big fan of the logo and wants a shirt.

I think we'll get into this.

I highly recommend it, Lunchbucket. It's very easy to get involved and get kinda close to the organization, and whatever community initiatives they support because there's wayyyyy less redtape and bullshit than larger leagues. And I vibe the fuscia and I'm hopeful that "Q" as an instant negative trigger will be forgotten soon.

If any of your poor bastards follow me on twitter, you know I love the USL. We got way too close to it this past year, as my gf now works for the club here and I'm on the board of the supporters group. It's second-tier, but it's not minor league. The quality is high, it's full of international players, and there's a real intimacy to it. And maybe (maybe!) New Mexico and Queens will play someday and I have another excuse to go to NY for sportsball.

You say "minor league" like it's a bad thing. Minor league baseball is the shit, trust me, I go to a dozen or so AAA games per year and always have a good time there.

As for soccer, well, I tried to give a shit, but ended up just taking one instead. I'm happy that you enjoy it and that your GF has turned it into a career. Good on you. I have a couple of friends who were born in European countries and they are all about soccer. I try watching it and meh

Re: Coming Soon-ish: Queensboro FC

i never likes soccer until minimm started to play. i'm on board with it all the way.

Also, big ditto on minor league baseball. the sussex miners just up the road from us here are super fun to watch, and they're not even affiliated with anyone. it's just fun baseball to watch.

Unaffiliated makes it all the better. Affiliation is for the birds.

Yeah, I love minor league baseball, too. "Minor league" is a phrase I hear from people too often to try to dismiss this league as less-than-elite or not professional before giving it a chance. I shoulda known this wasn't that room.
