One takeaway from this year is that Newsday generally upped their back-cover game. They are still too inconsistent and still make some odd choices but they execute the typeface and design better than they used to while still maintaining an overall brand approach, yada, yada, yada. Rare head-to-head victory over the same idea that the NYDN had for them in this round.

That Newsday Yada Yada rocks. Some people want vote for a negative cover even if Michaelangelo composed it and Shakespeare wrote the copy. They'd vote for the ugliest cover because its the only UPBEAT one in the bunch. Oh my God. Negative press. Help. Where's my garlic and my cross? Avert your eyes.

I like how CRUSHED and HEY '69 METS, SUIT UP use the same shot, but with a different crop, so CRUSHED crushed includes Cargo Shorts Guy dancing on the dugout, and Sweater Vest Guy rising in hope that the scoreboard operator will use the pitching change to update the golf scores. The wider shot makes the humiliation that much more intense.
