I voted for the Justin Wilson cover because it's likely the only Justin Wilson cover.

Edited 2 time(s), most recently on Nov 15 2019 01:09 PM

Fortunately, there was no cover with me seconds before Diaz gave up THAT game-winning HR (as shown on MASN, right before the pitch).

This is self-promoting but I wouldn't mind if Zvon was around to do a fake News, Newsday, or Post cover with that picture accompanying a game-related headline.

News did that great self-referencing thing in BEAR HUG with the inset of the back page from the day before because there was a chance readers couldn't figure out that a win followed a gut-wrenching loss. It's cheesy but charming. I also like the acres of empty seats behind Pete in Washington, awesome baseball town it's always been.

The orange bucket blocking out the nameplate for the News's version of chesty Alonso added to the action on that back page.

Might as well have gone with a full page of text on the DESTINY entry, what with the deck going on until next Thursday, but Frazier and the one-word headline nevertheless produced the desired oomph.

Like Zack and Jake down the stretch, the News kicks it into another gear come September.

Honorable mention: SNAKE HARMERS is a clever take on the usual phrase.

This is awesome!

I wonder what the reaction is on the copy desks when they see the rival used the exact same headline.

Love the positivity in these!

Destiny, Snake Harmers and the News version of Bare.

I wonder if during the Diamondbacks series somebody in the stands shouted “HEY WIL',” whether anybody among Justin Wilson, Wilson Ramos and Wilmer Flores looked up.

“I'm sorry,” interjected Noah Syndergaard, “did somebody call for SYN'?”

The Diaz Game was probably the most important single event of the year, tightly tied to the narrative of the entire season. Well-packaged tabloid coverage shouldn't lose to less significant events just because one is "positive" the other "negative." That's a topic for the the "Most Positive Event" Derby. This is a contest ultimately judging how stories were told and sold in words and pictures. The gravity of the event described--if it's conveyed well-- ought to matter.

I'm thinking about Maja having to look at this cover until next fall, and fearing for her outlook and mental health. Those are some pretty long winters in Stockholm. She needs a framed ray of sunshine to keep her spirits high!

Maja's been looking at bad-news covers for the last two years. (GOD OF BLUNDER and then MIDNIGHT BADNESS.) I think she can handle it!

I've been the biggest critic of those who will only vote for a "positive" or "upbeat" cover without even considering the opposites, or "negatives". It's maddening to me and a concept or an outlook that I can't even begin to comprehend . Especially when one of those voters I'm referring to is, or was, a professional journalist. It's a terrible bias and reflects a narrow or closed mindedness. And normally, I'd complain even more. But I don't even though I want to because, to play Devil's Advocate, the contest asks us to vote for our favorites. The contest doesn't ask us to give more weight to the covers with the most gravitas, or the covers that tell the story of the season the best or the covers that are the best microcosms of the whole season. Favorites.

I tend to agree too. But like you said, there were no criteria set. To each his own.

I voted for a negative cover as the winner for the last two years. I think the seasons we had warranted such.
