v. Ortiz

Beltran: .556 OPS, 1 HR, 1 K, 23 AB
=red]Delgado: 1.560 OPS, 5 HR, 3 K, 30 AB
Cliff: .500 OPS, 0 HR, 1 K, 12 AB
LoDuca: .516 OPS, 0 HR, 1 K, 13 AB
Reyes: .400 OPS, 0 SB, 0 K, 10 AB
=red]Valentin: 1.367 OPS, 1 HR, 2 K, 12 AB
=orange]Woody: .800 OPS, 0 HR, 2 K, 10 AB

The rest have had under 10 AB against Ortiz. I'd have been tempted to put Valentin in there instead of Hernandez today given how much our regulars have struggled against him, but we'll see how it goes, I guess . . .

Wasn't Ortiz a Benson Buncher?

I think that was Russ Ortiz, this is Ramon.

Edgy DC

You're right!

New rule. You can't joine the MLBPA unless you have a last name unique from all other active union members.

sharpie
Apr 11 2006 12:48 PM

Or at least can't have the same last name and first initial. The other Pedro Martinez is the guy we really have to drum out.

Frayed Knot

VP Cheney to throw out the first pitch.
The scouting report lists him as having questionable control. In particular, there was
one notorious HBP* during the winter league.

I read somewhere that Bannister doesn't believe in giving up hits in the first inning.

Mets go quietly in the 2nd

What -- no first inning run today? What gives???

Is anyone actually watching? How's Bannister look? Is he pitching inside at all?

LoDuca couldn't throw out Nick Johnson?

That's a little embarassing.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 01:36 PM

Clayton grounds out to Reyes, and Bannister's out of the inning.

Top of the third.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 01:38 PM

Ortiz with 25 pitches thrown through 2. We've got to be more patient with him. Nat's pen is a bit overworked after the extra innings last night--if we can get to the pen early, we'll be setting ourselves up nicely for the rest of the series.

OlerudOwned
Apr 11 2006 01:42 PM

Just adding to my theory that our pitchers should bat ahead of Hernandez, Bannister collects a base hit.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 01:42 PM

Bannister's dad talked about what a good hitter Brian was in college in the last game. Of course, Bannister struck out both times that game, but maybe he was nervous.

They're probably wrong. I tried to figure them out from the Yahoo! stat page, but they don't show sacs. I know Glavine had at least one . . .

Beltran singles to center.

Come on Carlos--Carlos wants to come home.

Edgy DC
Apr 11 2006 01:56 PM

Cool, Beltran takes a pitch tailing to the outside and almost rips the pitcher's head off.

Not so cool, it's his first pitch batting lefthanded this season.

National color guy suggested that the Bannisters of the world (legacy rookies) come up with more poise because they've been around Major League clubhouses since they were children.

Now two on for Wright.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 01:57 PM

Carlos singles. Carloses at 1st & 2nd for Wright, who has ground into a number of DP's already this season . . .

Wright advances to third on the play.

Let's go, Nady!

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:06 PM

Nady ignores me and flies out to right instead.

Nady's 0 for his last 5 AB now. How long before the boo's start?

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:12 PM

Vidro flies out to deep right
Moron pops out to right
Flash Johnson flies out to left center.

Pretty impressive for the poised Bannister, especially given that these guys have already seen him once.

Yup.

Hey-ho! Hernandez is on a hot streak! Infield single!

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:19 PM

Back to Xavier, he was hot pretty much through the All-Star break last year (.839 OPS), then posted a .664 OPS after the All-Star Break.

In 2004, when given the chance to hit, he did.

In 2003, he did well in April, May & September, and sucked in June & July.

I'm not sure that all combines to qualify him for streaky, but that seems to be his reputation.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:20 PM

Bannister sacrifices, Reyes with a ribbie single, and LoDuca doubles him home!

Beltran at the plate with one out.

4-0 Mets!

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:21 PM

Beltran walks. Delgado up with two ducks on the pond.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:25 PM

Delgado grounds out, advancing Beltran and LoDuca.

Wright up.

Will they pitch to him, with 1st base open?

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:26 PM

Yes, they will. Ortiz went 0-2 on Wright.

Now 1-2.

And now Wright flies out to right center.

Whadda bum.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:38 PM

Damn, Bannister.

- A. Soriano popped out to second
- R. Zimmerman singled to center
- R. Clayton fouled out to first
- B. Schneider popped out to third
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

Lookin' reaaal good from up here.

Ortiz up to 82 pitches.

Rotblatt
Apr 11 2006 02:45 PM

Mets go quietly in the sixth. Ortiz only had to throw 10 pitches, meaning we'll likely see him in the seventh.

I don't know if I'd go that far yet, but he sure is looking pretty good.

6 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 88 pitches

He's still throwing too many balls (41%), and he's not striking anyone out, but he's they're clearly taking some bad swings off him (a lot of foul outs and pop ups) AND this is the second time they've seen him.

32 pitches for Wagner.

So in a 6-run win we manage to use Heilman and Wagner and have Sanchez warm up.

Way to go Willie!!!

hallelujah.

seriously though, what the fuck was that all about. Bring in anyone but Wagner there. Now you'd have to think he's unlikely to be available in more then 3 out of the next 5 games.

Last year, we only had five 4-game winning streaks.

If you two have something to say, perhaps you'd like to share it with the entire class?

I think the reason for Wagner's appearance is that it's still spring for him, and getting him a safe inning or two is about getting his work in.

I also think that if Aaron Heilman pitches like an All-Star, but the Mets rotation is hot and healthy enough to keep him in the pen, that's just great. And I'll be over the moon.

Heilman is just great, could be an All-Star this year.

Heilman All Star, Wright MVP, metirish, do you have a little crystal ball?

metirish
Apr 11 2006 10:47 PM

No Cobby :) but I have this amazin feeling about this team this year, any team would love to have Heilman in the pen, he's the shit really.
