Observations
* Perfect on the road? Say it ain't sample size.
* The top 3 teams in the East maintained or improved from last week (Philly a salty 4-2); the bottom two didn't.
* Every team in the AL East is .500 or above, and all but 1 team in the NL Central is; the AL West is the memorial 2005 NL West divison, with the top team at .500 and the rest below.
* Unsurprisingly, the Mets' runs allowed number is lowest in the majors. Nipping on the heels: Detroit (!) 47, St. Lou 48, Bosox 49.
* Atlanta no longer leading the RS/RAs, overtaken in runs scored by 1 by that team; a minor implosion released a deluge of runs in Pittsburgh (90), with KC (82), the Nats (tied @ 78) and the D-Rays (77) in the mix.
* With an RS minus RA of 27, the Mets actually fell behind that team by 1 in the good differential; those schmucks are 500, though. The Tigers (18), Rox (15), St. Louis (14), Astros (14) follow. Poor poor K.C. (37) outdoes the field in the negative differential, with the Nats (24) and Bucs (21) among the other strugglers.

* Mets still own the fewest runs allowed in baseball.
* Last week was the 'worst' of the season so far, at 3-4. Nobody else in the N.L.E. went better than 1 game over .500 (3-2), however.
* Mets own 3rd in RS - RA difference at 29, behind Chisox (34) and the MFY (35).
* Philly is nearly the worst in the negative differential (25), with the Pirates (27) and KC (44!) outdoing them.

At 14-7, the Mets have opened up a 4.5 game lead in the East. Good stuff.

While they no longer own the best record in baseball, they are tied for 3rd along with the defending Champs and St. Louis. Ahead of them are the Astros (no surprise) and the Reds (surprise!). What gives? Is Cincy for real?

No, I don't think so.
Their starting pitching just isn't that good, even if Arroyo is way outperforming his potential.

Apr 27 2006 11:34 AM

They can score though, the bullpen is solid enough, and they get to beat up on Pittsburgh and maybe the Cubs decimated team. They also play Houston and St. Louis alot so they should get handed their asses plenty of times.

Keep in mind that the Reds are coming off a sweep of the Nationals --- unowned and hapless --- capped by a one-hitter featuring eight innings from Bronson Arroyo. No disrespect to Braidless Bronson, but the Nats helped the Mets look pretty good also.

Observations
* We're holding at .667. Same winning percentage as last week at this time, due to our 4-2 over last week. On the road. In the Pacific time zone. And in Georgia. Yeah.
* 3 of our 5 divisional opponents had 1-win weeks (ATL 1-5, WAS 1-6, FLA 1-5). Sucks to be them.
* The NL East averages the lowest runs scored (109) and runs allowed (115.6) in beisbol. The AL East (130.6 / 129) averages the highest.
* Mets have allowed 2nd fewest total runs in baseball. (Detroit? What?)
* Mets increased their RS - RA difference to 31, putting us 5th behind MFY (53), Detroit (50), Chisox (44) and Cards (32).
* The AL Central is hella stratified -- KC is at -56, Minny at -51. We face the NL negative leader in the Bucs (-37) next.
* Badness: Pedro and Glavine miss the Braves this weekend. Ulp.

* In the vein of Willets' previous comment, the Mets are playing .500 ball since the hot start. After going 10-2 out of the blocks, we're 13-12. (Of course, you won't hear me complaining if we come out of this next week at 4-3 or even 3-4).
* The Mets are in the top tier of MLB in RS-RA differential, 6th behind St. Lou, MFY, Inter Toronto, Chisox and Detroit. The negative award goes to the Cubbies, Bucs, D-Dogs, Royales and Gothams.
* The Braves quietly had a substantive uptick this week, feasting on the Nats and Fish to the tune of a 4-2 mark.
* Somebody's still due for a statistical correction. Without the Mets, those guys would be on a 14-game winning streak. Yikes. (Other team to win 9 of their last 10: The Padres.)
* Wash. & Fla. have only 3 home wins apiece -- next fewest is 7.

Despite our hiccup in St. Loo, we still find ourselves in first place, 2 ahead of the Phading Phils and 3.5 ahead of the surging Braves. After tripping us up, the Cards now have the best record in the NL, but the Mets remain the only other team playing .600 baseball.

The funny thing is, if I were in a coma from spring training and woke up today, I would be thrilled about where the Mets are. Which is odd considering how crummy I feel today. Maybe it's because it could have been better...maybe it's because I think we'll have our first 3 game losing streak when Unit squares off against Gonzalez tomorrow. I don't know.

But if nothing else, I guess this standings thread makes me feel a little bit better. First place. Not a bad place to be.

Its cuz they started out so hot we all were expecting '86 all over again.

It's May, they're in 1st, the bullpen looks good, nice offense, Pedro & Glavine are pitching well.

There's a lot to feel good about.

Quick review before inter-league starts and begins to mess up all the math.
As of now, the division records as a while are:

NL East: -17 (games under .500)
NL Central: +3
NL West: +14

AL East: +11
AL Central: Even
AL West: -11

smg58

The NL West is really that good? I can believe the East being that bad (the Marlins and the Nats are doormats). I guess the West doesn't have anybody doing badly right now.

Frayed Knot
May 19 2006 06:40 PM

No single team in the NLWest is all that good, but every team is hanging
a couple games above .500

The NL East is obviously being brought down by the two anchors.

Basically so far it's 3 really bad teams: Pitt, Fla & Wash taking a serious
beaing from most of the other 13.
Only the Cubs are hanging in that limbo between average and lousy - and
that can be at least partially written off to them missing Wood, Prior & Lee.

The NL holds a slight (like 4 games) edge in Interleague since it started in
1997 - even as the AL won a significant chunk of last year's tilts.

Also, I'm not sure what the "not qualifying for the WC" comment was about. At the close of business on 6/7, the Mets had the best record in the National league, 1/2 game better than co-division leaders StL and CIN, 1.5 games ahead of ARZ.

Elster88

Thanks for the helpful info, all, but I realize that the Mets are in first and would make the playoffs if the season ended today regardless of wildcard standings. This is not new to me.
You are correct now Gwreck, but I posted before the Mets won yesterday, so they were in a virtual tie. Maybe the percentage points were leaning one way or the other, but you and FK are both nitpicking and missing what I was saying.

Here's what I am saying: The Mets are not, at this point, running away from the majority of the league with a great record, so the playoffs may not be as easy to qualify for as it seemed a few weeks ago.

Yancy Street Gang

What's the quick and easy way to calculate magic number?

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 08 2006 04:06 PM

Determine the maximum number of wins that the second place team can get. (162 - the number of games that the team has lost.)

See how many games the first place team needs to win to get one more win than that maximum number.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 08 2006 04:09 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 08 2006 04:29 PM

NY Mets 35 23
Philadelphia 32 27
Atlanta 29 31
Washington 27 33
Florida 21 36

With 27 losses, the Phillies can win, at most, 135 games.

For the Mets to get 136 wins, they'd need to win 101 more games.

Therefore, the magic number is 101.

Edited to highlight the magic number.

Yancy Street Gang

Unexpected and unheralded divisional storyline: The Florida Marlins of Miami/Dade County. Since the official May 21 low-water mark of 11-31 (following 7 straight losses to the craptastic Braves and surging D-Rays), they're a blazing 18-6, posting sweeps of the Braves and Blue Jays (aggregate score: 28-12) at home last week to extend an 8-game winning streak. A road sweep in the Rockies, series win in San Diego, and a home sweep of the hapless Cubs all have contributed to the streak. They've only dropped two series, in Flushing and at Alexander Graham Park, over the span where they pulled nearly even in RS/RA. We'll root for Bawlmer to filet the Fish like they did us, and for the Mystique and Aura to overwhelm 'em later this week.

Sundries
* NYM Pythagorean record: 40-28.
* Officially #1 in the NL in RS-RA difference, #2 in runs scored to the somewhat-surprising Dodgers, and #3 in runs allowed to the Pads and the Cards.
* The NL East is the run-scoringest division, on average, in the league. We trail all 3 AL divisions in this respect.

Series starting today
Cincinnati (Arroyo, Ramirez, Mays, Milton) at N.Y. Mets (Duque, Trax, Alay, Pedro) (4 games)
Washington (Armas, Hernandez, Hill) at Boston (Snyder, Wakefield, Lester)

That all, of course, skews the standings by depressing the overall NL win pcts
while raising the AL pcts.

Before the Mets came to town, Arizona was 34-25 and leading second-place Los Angeles by 1.5 games.

After the Mets left town, Arizona went 2-6, and sit tied for third at 36-35, one and half games behind San Diego.

I'm curious to see how they do the rest of the way out, and if the Met series will be some kind of turning point for them.

I think the DBacks slide started one series earlier against the Phillies. I'd be happy of the DBacks fell out of it. Quite frankly, after all the talking we did about how the Mets thrive in Arizona, I was scared that we would have to go back there in October and not score a run.

An oddity to this season is that, for the first time in a long time, Braves games are of little interest.
Whether I was on them because there was a direct NYM/Atl pennant ract, or just following them because they were always so damn good, I had become accustomed to having a interest on the outcomes of their games - especially since they're on TV here more often than any other team outside of the two locals.

Not that I want to sound like I'm complaining too loud, but they're just plain boring right now.
But at least they're far enough behind where I can root for them as the play the MFYs this week.

NO NO NO! It doesn't matter, the MFY are none of our concern. Only time they matter is if we play them in October. Thats IT. Our main concern is locking up this division AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!, which each and every single Phillie, National, Marlin and even Brave loss will help accomplish. Combined with our wins, that makes it 2 steps closer instead of the hard way, one step at a time!

In other words, NO ROOTING FOR THE BRAVES! Hell even if they've been eliminated, the margin still looks better in the long run

I pronounced the Tigers to be a bunch of paper Tigers after watching them lose 7 of 10 to the Skanks, BSox & CSox but they're proving me wrong.
Up to that point they had the look of a team which was picking on all the weak kids (lots of Royals games and hardly anyone over .500) before getting their asses kicked once the big boys got home from school: bad 'D', pitchers who couldn't find the zone, etc.
Yeah they got a break in getting the Cards when they're slumping and the pitiful Cubs this week but they're kicking NL butts during interleague.

They've got 13 left with the ChiSox in the second half who they've lost 5 of 6 to so far. Throw in the streaking Twins and it certainly looks like the WC will come out of the Central this year removing that constant safety net that the Yanx & Sawx have been playing with seemingly forever.

Rooting for the Yankees to beat the Braves shows a serious lack of perspective.

Who cares when the last-place team gets eliminated? The Yankees are 2 games out of first place. The wild card may end up out of their reach. A perfect regular season would end with the Mets in the NLDS and the Yankees at home. THAT'S what I'm rooting for. And that scenario doesn't involve rooting for the Yankees to win.

Interleague play is stupid, I always lose interest during this week of the year. It makes me sick that the Mets play the Yankees as many times per year as they play the Cardinals and Dodgers. I could not care less how the Mets fare against the Yankees because they really are the most meaningless games.

I understand the cash cow it creates for the NY teams and MLB, but it still doesn't change the fact that baseball fans across the country don't care what happens in Boston and New York.

Just another three games right now. The reason I'm really using that tact is that this series really does means more to the Yankees then it does for the Mets, I know I'll be happy with a Met win of the series, but I'm really talking about no pressure being on the Mets this series.

In other words, if we get swept I'm just going to go "Oh well, hope it doesn't lead to a stupid pre-ASG Break tail spin" as we head into the Pittsburgh-Florida homestand

I understood your usage. It just struck me how different that is compared to the way we usually see that written in the papers. We usually see Red Sox (for some reason considered a plural, although the name of a single team) associated with a plural verb.

To follow up on Elster's examples, I've almost exclusively seen:
The Red Sox have only won one championship
or
Boston has only won one championship.

Your usage jumped off the page as being different. Doesn't mean I said it was wrong.

Course the main 25 Man Roster Thread could be a good spot for that discussion

All-purpose means all-purpose, doesn't it?

If we have separate all-purpose threads for every aspect of talking about the standings, then it's no longer "all-purpose."

Hey I'm kidding about the wrapping up before September hits.

The Braves do have me worried a bit, just in the "I've seen this before" kind of way, and posting Bobby Thomson's HR is a reminder of how any damn thing is possible

Though a nice 2 out of three or sweep and a front line starter on Monday should have me kicking back and getting ready for Eli vs Big Brother Peyton on September 10th, and feeling very happy about that situation for the first time in a LONG time

SteveJRogers
Jul 26 2006 05:44 PM

I think the nervousness also comes from too many hours spent listening to sports radio, and reading nervous nellies on the Internet Met Community as well. Like I said a year ago, seems like the Ya Gotta Believe/Amazin' Miracle Mets attitude of the Met fans died sometime with the advent of dialouge sports radio and the internet

Actually quick look at the schedule shows that we have a good shot of whitling the respective elimination numbers of NL East teams down over the next couple of weeks.

at Braves 7/28-8/1
at Florida 8/1-8/3
vs Phillies 8/4-8/6 (could they be Abreu or Burrell less?)
The return of two guys named Mike 8/8-8/10
at DC 8/11-8/13
at Philly 8/14-8/17
Then the Rockies come in 8/19-8/20 followed by the Redbirds 8/22-8/24
Then Phillies for a weekend set 8/25-8/27 and we are done with them for the year
and we wrap up August in Colorado 8/29-8/30

19 out of 31 games against the East. I'd say that would knock the magic number down quite a bit by September 1st when we head to Minute Maid for a weekend set against the Stros.

Number 44 at Syracuse University is one of the most fabled numbers ever associated with a college football program.

Since 1954, nine players have worn the number and three earned All-American honors. Those three--Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little--rank among the finest running backs ever to play the college game. Ernie Davis is the only Syracuse player to win the Heisman Trophy as the nation's most outstanding college football player.

Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little

The number was retired in 2005.

The Syracuse University zip code was changed sometime in the '90's from 13210 to 13244.

Derrick Coleman, the All-American basketball forward also wore #44 during his undergraduate years at Syracuse.

Center Rony Seikaly (pictured, far left) and forward Derrick Coleman (#44) were key components to Syracuse's run to the NCAA title game in 1987.

Meanwhile, the three-game sweep has knocked the Padres out of first place. They're in second, tied with Arizona, a half game behind the Dodgers.

We should pay a little attention to the wild card standings, since it will determine the Mets first round opponent. (If the wild card comes out of the NL East, the Mets will probably play the NL West winner, otherwise the postseason will likely kick off against the wild card winner.)

I think I'd like to see San Diego win the West, and Cincinnati win the card.

In that scenario, the Phillies would more likely be pounded out of the playoffs by their first-round opponent, probably the Cardinals.

Doesn't the wild card play the winner of their own division?

Elster88
Aug 16 2006 11:41 AM

Nope. Almost exactly the opposite, IIRC.

The wildcard winner plays the division winner with the best record, unless they came from the same division. Then the wildcard winner plays the division winner with the second best record of the division winners (in that scenario, the teams with the best and worst division records among division winners are matched up).

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Aug 16 2006 11:43 AM

If this were to be a repeat of 2000, when the Mets biggest threat (Atlanta) was knocked off for them in the NL playoffs, I wouldn't be too upset. I'd rather that happen than one of the years in the late 80's when the Mets won all but one game against LA during the regular season, then lost to them in the playoffs.

Later

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 16 2006 11:47 AM

In 2000, the Mets played the Giants, Cardinals, then Yankees.

In 1999, it was Diamondbacks, then Braves.

The Mets and Phillies can't play in the first round. If the Mets end up with the highest winning percentage, and the Phillies are the wild card, the Mets first round opponent would be either the NL Central or West winner, whichever one had the lower winning percentage.

Uni Watch, I think, has written more on this, but there's very little precedent for baseball captains wearing regalia to indicate thier status. Carter didn't, which made Keith look even sillier.

I think that the day the appointment came down, Charle Samuels asked Keith if he wanted something on is jersey and Keith answered somethihng like, "Sure, whatever," without giving it much thought.

Not that I'm arguing for it, because I'm not, but considering that Jullio Franco was signed to fill a captain-ish role, as well as pinch hit and backup at first, is there any reason a bench player, particularly one with a two-year contract, should be disqualified from the honor?

Either that or just plain whomever got their paperwork done first I guess.

Ehem...

Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.
Georgia, Georgia, a song of you
Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines.

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you.

Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Melodies bring memories
That linger in my heart
Make me think of Georgia
Why did we ever part?

Some sweet day when blossoms fall
And all the world's a song
I'll go back to Georgia
'Cause that's where I belong.

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.

The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.

It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.

Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.

3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
Multiply backwards from three times ten:

Three time ten is (30), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one is three of course.

Now take the pattern once more:
Three! . . .3-6-9
Twelve! . . .12-15-18
Twenty-one!. . .21-24-27. . .30

Now multiply from 10 backwards:
Three time ten is (30 - Keep going), three times nine is (27),
Three times eight is (24), three times seven is (21),
Three times six is (18), three times five is (15),
Three times four is twelve,
And three times three is nine, and three times two is six,
And three times one...
What is it?!
Three!
Yeah, That's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby.
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family.
That's a magic number.

Yancy Street Gang
Sep 18 2006 03:12 PM

It was way back on May 5 that I first calculated and posted the magic number on page one of this thread. At that point, the magic number was a robust 130.

In the months since then, we've watched the magic number dwindle. We followed it around the country in the state-by-state countdown. We celebrated it in song, and with photos of Mets wearing the magic number on their uniform.

But now the magic number is an old friend who has outstayed its welcome, and has become a bitter foe. We were prepared to bid it a fond good-bye on Friday night, but it refused to leave. Saturday and Sunday provided more of the same.

Enough! Our patience is at its end! Now, the magic number must die! And it must die tonight!

So let us gather our magic-number killing tools. Pitchforks and torches, of course. And silver bullets. And a wreath of garlic or two. And a stake to drive through its magic heart.

I've come to realize that the magic that possesses this number is an evil one. An arcane black magic that must be purged and vanquished!

Let our hands be steady and our aim be true!

Let the magic number die TONIGHT!
