Observations * Perfect on the road? Say it ain't sample size. * The top 3 teams in the East maintained or improved from last week (Philly a salty 4-2); the bottom two didn't. * Every team in the AL East is .500 or above, and all but 1 team in the NL Central is; the AL West is the memorial 2005 NL West divison, with the top team at .500 and the rest below. * Unsurprisingly, the Mets' runs allowed number is lowest in the majors. Nipping on the heels: Detroit (!) 47, St. Lou 48, Bosox 49. * Atlanta no longer leading the RS/RAs, overtaken in runs scored by 1 by that team; a minor implosion released a deluge of runs in Pittsburgh (90), with KC (82), the Nats (tied @ 78) and the D-Rays (77) in the mix. * With an RS minus RA of 27, the Mets actually fell behind that team by 1 in the good differential; those schmucks are 500, though. The Tigers (18), Rox (15), St. Louis (14), Astros (14) follow. Poor poor K.C. (37) outdoes the field in the negative differential, with the Nats (24) and Bucs (21) among the other strugglers. Monday's games Atlanta 5, Philadelphia 3 WP: Villarreal (3-0); LP: Franklin (0-1); Sv: Reitsma (3) Houston 5, Washington 4 WP: Qualls (1-1); LP: Stanton (0-1) Tuesday's games N.Y. Observations * The NL East averages the lowest runs scored (83.6) and runs allowed (87.6) in beisbol. The AL East (101.2 / 96.4) averages the highest. * Mets still own the fewest runs allowed in baseball. * Last week was the 'worst' of the season so far, at 3-4. Nobody else in the N.L.E. went better than 1 game over .500 (3-2), however. * Mets own 3rd in RS - RA difference at 29, behind Chisox (34) and the MFY (35). * Philly is nearly the worst in the negative differential (25), with the Pirates (27) and KC (44!) outdoing them. Monday's games Cincinnati 9, Florida 1 N.Y. Mets 4, Atlanta 3 Tuesday's games Washington 10, Philadelphia 3 Florida 12, Cincinnati 6 Atlanta 7, N.Y. No, I don't think so. Their starting pitching just isn't that good, even if Arroyo is way outperforming his potential.
Nymr83 Apr 27 2006 11:34 AM |
They can score though, the bullpen is solid enough, and they get to beat up on Pittsburgh and maybe the Cubs decimated team. They also play Houston and St. Louis alot so they should get handed their asses plenty of times.

Keep in mind that the Reds are coming off a sweep of the Nationals --- unowned and hapless --- capped by a one-hitter featuring eight innings from Bronson Arroyo. No disrespect to Braidless Bronson, but the Nats helped the Mets look pretty good also.

Observations * We're holding at .667. Same winning percentage as last week at this time, due to our 4-2 over last week. On the road. In the Pacific time zone. And in Georgia. Yeah. * 3 of our 5 divisional opponents had 1-win weeks (ATL 1-5, WAS 1-6, FLA 1-5). Sucks to be them. * The NL East averages the lowest runs scored (109) and runs allowed (115.6) in beisbol. The AL East (130.6 / 129) averages the highest. * Mets have allowed 2nd fewest total runs in baseball. (Detroit? What?) * Mets increased their RS - RA difference to 31, putting us 5th behind MFY (53), Detroit (50), Chisox (44) and Cards (32). * The AL Central is hella stratified -- KC is at -56, Minny at -51. We face the NL negative leader in the Bucs (-37) next. * Badness: Pedro and Glavine miss the Braves this weekend. Ulp. * Yesterday aside, we've won 5 of 7, 10 of 15 and, uh, 20 of 30. Had another 4-game winning streak (first since SF-ATL in late April). * Somebody's due for a statistical correction. * In the vein of Willets' previous comment, the Mets are playing .500 ball since the hot start. After going 10-2 out of the blocks, we're 13-12. (Of course, you won't hear me complaining if we come out of this next week at 4-3 or even 3-4). * The Mets are in the top tier of MLB in RS-RA differential, 6th behind St. Lou, MFY, Inter Toronto, Chisox and Detroit. The negative award goes to the Cubbies, Bucs, D-Dogs, Royales and Gothams. * The Braves quietly had a substantive uptick this week, feasting on the Nats and Fish to the tune of a 4-2 mark. * Somebody's still due for a statistical correction. Without the Mets, those guys would be on a 14-game winning streak. Yikes. (Other team to win 9 of their last 10: The Padres.) * Wash. & Fla. have only 3 home wins apiece -- next fewest is 7. * Fish finally got over that elusive 10-win hurdle. Monday's games Siesta Tuesday's games Philadelphia 5, Mets 4 Atlanta 10, Florida 2 Washington 7, Cincinnati 1 Wednesday's games Mets 13, Philadelphia 4 Florida 11, Atlanta 3 Cincinnati 9, Washington 6 Thursday's games Philadelphia 2, Mets 0 Atlanta 9, Florida 1 Cincinnati 5, Washington 4 Friday's games Pittsburgh 12, Florida 1 Philadelphia 8, Cincinnati 4 Atlanta 6, Washington 2 Milwaukee 9, Mets 6 Saturday's games Philadelphia 2, Cincinnati 0 Mets 9, Milwaukee 8 Atlanta 8, Washington 5 Florida 4, Pittsburgh 3 Sunday's games Washington 8, Atlanta 1 Philadelphia 2, Cincinnati 1 Florida 8, Pittsburgh 2 Milwaukee 6, Mets 5 Next series Mets (23-14) [Glavine (5-2, 2.19), Glavine (4-2, 1.94), Trachsel (2-3, 4.91), Bannister (2-0, 2.89) / Lima (0-2, 9.31)] at St. Louis (24-14) [Suppan (4-2, 4.58), Mulder (4-1, 4.27), Marquis (4-4, 5.33)] Philadelphia (22-15) (Lidle, Floyd, Hamels) at Milwaukee (19-19) (Capuano, Bush, Eveland) Florida (11-24) (Johnson, Willis, Nolasco, Olsen) at Atlanta (17-20) (Davies, Hudson, Smoltz, Sosa) Washington (13-25) (Hernandez, Day, Ortiz) at Chicago (15-22) (Zambrano, Marshall, Wood) Weekend series -- (mostly) interleague! Despite our hiccup in St. Loo, we still find ourselves in first place, 2 ahead of the Phading Phils and 3.5 ahead of the surging Braves. After tripping us up, the Cards now have the best record in the NL, but the Mets remain the only other team playing .600 baseball.

4 of their last 4 6 of their last 7 10 of their last 13 13 of their last 17 15 of their last 20 I hate the Braves. * NYM Pythagorean record: 28-21. * Philly is phreefalling -- 2-4 last week after 1-6 the previous. * If you needed any additional proof that the Cubs are just terrible, they were swept by the Marlins, who were swept by the D-Rays the week before. * We have the same RA number as the Snakes (tied for 2nd in the NL [3rd in MLB] behind StL [Detroit]). I think the point was that we're in first place. Also, I'm not sure what the "not qualifying for the WC" comment was about. At the close of business on 6/7, the Mets had the best record in the National league, 1/2 game better than co-division leaders StL and CIN, 1.5 games ahead of ARZ.

Unexpected and unheralded divisional storyline: The Florida Marlins of Miami/Dade County. Since the official May 21 low-water mark of 11-31 (following 7 straight losses to the craptastic Braves and surging D-Rays), they're a blazing 18-6, posting sweeps of the Braves and Blue Jays (aggregate score: 28-12) at home last week to extend an 8-game winning streak. A road sweep in the Rockies, series win in San Diego, and a home sweep of the hapless Cubs all have contributed to the streak. They've only dropped two series, in Flushing and at Alexander Graham Park, over the span where they pulled nearly even in RS/RA. We'll root for Bawlmer to filet the Fish like they did us, and for the Mystique and Aura to overwhelm 'em later this week. Sundries * NYM Pythagorean record: 40-28. * Officially #1 in the NL in RS-RA difference, #2 in runs scored to the somewhat-surprising Dodgers, and #3 in runs allowed to the Pads and the Cards. * The NL East is the run-scoringest division, on average, in the league. We trail all 3 AL divisions in this respect. Series starting today Cincinnati (Arroyo, Ramirez, Mays, Milton) at N.Y. Mets (Duque, Trax, Alay, Pedro) (4 games) Washington (Armas, Hernandez, Hill) at Boston (Snyder, Wakefield, Lester) MFY (Eunuch, Mussina, Wright) at Philadelphia (Myers, Lidle, Hamels) Starting tomorrow Florida (Willis, Nolasco, Olsen) at Baltimore (Cabrera, Bedard, Benson) Toronto (Towers, Lilly, Burnett) at Atlanta (Sosa, Hudson, Ramirez) Friday's Washington (Patterson, Ortiz, Armas) at Baltimore (Lopez, Loewen, Cabrera) Philadelphia (Madson, Myers, Lidle) at Boston (Beckett, Schilling, Wakefield) Florida (Moehler, Johnson, Willis) at MFY (Chacon, Wang, Unit) Mets (Glavine, Duque, Traxel) at Toronto (Halladay, Taubenheim, Towers) Atlanta (Smoltz, Thomson, Sosa) at Tampa Bay (Kazmir, McClung, Hendrickson)

NO NO NO! It doesn't matter, the MFY are none of our concern. Only time they matter is if we play them in October. Thats IT. Our main concern is locking up this division AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!, which each and every single Phillie, National, Marlin and even Brave loss will help accomplish. Combined with our wins, that makes it 2 steps closer instead of the hard way, one step at a time! In other words, NO ROOTING FOR THE BRAVES! Hell even if they've been eliminated, the margin still looks better in the long run

Frayed Knot Jun 25 2006 11:13 PM |

Do you have contrary evidence that the Red Sox have won the AL East championship anytime in the last decade? It seems to me its been Yankees every year but 1997 when it was the Orioles. |
SteveJRogers Jun 26 2006 01:30 PM |
Put it this way. The Yankees are rendered meaningless. It doesn't matter if we get swept this coming weekend. We lose the season series 2-4, eh no big deal. Leave season series bragging rights for when we are in the midst of a shit storm of a year where we are struggling to reach .500. In fact, the series means more for the MFY than it does to us. Period.
Gwreck Jun 26 2006 01:35 PM |
I've got no serious objection to Steve's point that we root for the Braves to lose when they play the MFYs. No problem. This, however, gives me serious pause. The games against the Yankees are meaningless? It doesn't matter if we get swept? I realize it matters more to those of us living in New York than those elsewhere --- but beating the MFYs always matters. Once we have an advantage in the overall series, maybe. Bragging rights do matter.
Yancy Street Gang Jun 26 2006 01:39 PM |
Rooting for the Yankees to beat the Braves shows a serious lack of perspective.
Johnny Dickshot Jun 26 2006 01:40 PM |
I'm with YSG on this. I like to see the MFYs humiliated and as long as we TCB, I'm comfortable maintaining the current spread. If a Braves sweep undermines the Mets race to the division title, you can whack me with a broom 3 times.
metirish Jun 26 2006 01:43 PM |
No way no how can I ever root for the yankees, I just can't...I remember the 2001 WS when the whole world apparently was rooting for the MFY' because of 9/11, I got such a hard time in the office because I wouldn't root for them....it was like.." how could you not shout for them"?....I csan still see Gonzo's reaction when he got that hit...
Elster88 Jun 26 2006 01:46 PM |
I normally am strongly on the side of root against the NL East at all costs. But at this point it's a little silly. We're 15.5 up on the Braves.
TransMonk Jun 26 2006 01:47 PM |
Interleague play is stupid, I always lose interest during this week of the year. It makes me sick that the Mets play the Yankees as many times per year as they play the Cardinals and Dodgers. I could not care less how the Mets fare against the Yankees because they really are the most meaningless games.
Elster88 Jun 26 2006 01:50 PM |
The Yankee games are the most fun to attend in person for the entire season, excluding any pennant races.
Willets Point Jun 26 2006 01:51 PM |
Boston in this sense is a collective noun - a team of 25 men or a city of 600,000. It's not a single thing, hence the plural verb.

I've never seen that usage outside of the World Cup. I don't think it's commonly used.
SteveJRogers Jun 26 2006 01:53 PM |
Just another three games right now. The reason I'm really using that tact is that this series really does means more to the Yankees then it does for the Mets, I know I'll be happy with a Met win of the series, but I'm really talking about no pressure being on the Mets this series. In other words, if we get swept I'm just going to go "Oh well, hope it doesn't lead to a stupid pre-ASG Break tail spin" as we head into the Pittsburgh-Florida homestand
Yancy Street Gang Jun 26 2006 01:54 PM |

MFS62 Jun 26 2006 02:01 PM |

I understood your usage. It just struck me how different that is compared to the way we usually see that written in the papers. We usually see Red Sox (for some reason considered a plural, although the name of a single team) associated with a plural verb. To follow up on Elster's examples, I've almost exclusively seen: The Red Sox have only won one championship or Boston has only won one championship. Your usage jumped off the page as being different. Doesn't mean I said it was wrong. Later

When should I even think about posting the 25 Man Postseason Roster thread? Course the main 25 Man Roster Thread could be a good spot for that discussion
SteveJRogers Jul 26 2006 04:24 PM |
Also its win #60 on the year. 21 more to clinch an over .500 record!
Yancy Street Gang Jul 26 2006 04:25 PM |
All-purpose means all-purpose, doesn't it?
Willets Point Jul 26 2006 04:28 PM |
Actually, in September I want the magic number in glowing numbers on the top of the page, not in a seperate thread.
Willets Point Jul 26 2006 04:28 PM |
Unless the Mets have had a collossall collapse and find themselves behind the Braves.
SteveJRogers Jul 26 2006 04:29 PM |
Course we could go on a huge August win streak, Braves crap all kinds of crap in August (ditto everyonelse) and we could have the earliest clinch date ever in a normal schedule!
Yancy Street Gang Jul 26 2006 04:32 PM |
This from the guy who was pushing the panic button only yesterday.
Willets Point Jul 26 2006 04:38 PM |
The Mets would have to win 25 or so games between now and Aug. 31st for that to happen.
Yancy Street Gang Jul 26 2006 04:40 PM |
And the Braves and the Phillies and the Marlins would have to all lose about 25 games during that same time span.
OlerudOwned Jul 26 2006 04:42 PM |

I don't see your point... SC=Yup
SteveJRogers Jul 26 2006 05:42 PM |

Hey I'm kidding about the wrapping up before September hits. The Braves do have me worried a bit, just in the "I've seen this before" kind of way, and posting Bobby Thomson's HR is a reminder of how any damn thing is possible Though a nice 2 out of three or sweep and a front line starter on Monday should have me kicking back and getting ready for Eli vs Big Brother Peyton on September 10th, and feeling very happy about that situation for the first time in a LONG time
SteveJRogers Jul 26 2006 05:44 PM |
I think the nervousness also comes from too many hours spent listening to sports radio, and reading nervous nellies on the Internet Met Community as well. Like I said a year ago, seems like the Ya Gotta Believe/Amazin' Miracle Mets attitude of the Met fans died sometime with the advent of dialouge sports radio and the internet
Centerfield Jul 26 2006 05:49 PM |
I don't know about meds, but one thing that could help your psyche is to stop listening to sports radio.

That won't be possible. If the Mets sweep the Braves, the Marlins or Phillies (who are playing each other) will move into second place.

Washington hasn't dealt itself out! They shitcanned Mike Stanton, added Austin Kearns, and kept Soriano. They''re the 2nd half sleeper!

My dad has a theory that the Mets are letting the Phillies beat up on them so that they will win the Wild Card, get swelled heads doing so, and the Mets can pound them in the playoffs.
Yancy Street Gang Aug 16 2006 11:34 AM |
In that scenario, the Phillies would more likely be pounded out of the playoffs by their first-round opponent, probably the Cardinals.
cooby Aug 16 2006 11:37 AM |
Doesn't the wild card play the winner of their own division?
Elster88 Aug 16 2006 11:41 AM |

If this were to be a repeat of 2000, when the Mets biggest threat (Atlanta) was knocked off for them in the NL playoffs, I wouldn't be too upset. I'd rather that happen than one of the years in the late 80's when the Mets won all but one game against LA during the regular season, then lost to them in the playoffs.

Hence why the MFY have never saw fit to afix a C to any of their captain's jerseys! Despite the cottage industry it could create considering Yankee Captains usually are the most popular players (Jeter, Mattingly, Munson)

Uni Watch, I think, has written more on this, but there's very little precedent for baseball captains wearing regalia to indicate thier status. Carter didn't, which made Keith look even sillier.

To put this in proper perspective - the Mets have 30 games to play. The Phillies could win EVERY game between now and the end of the season, and so long as the Mets play .500 ball they still win the division.

I hadn't realized that the Phillies and Braves were already scheduled to play a doubleheader today. And that's going to be interesting - I don't know that they'll be able to start the first game at 1:05, get it completed, and clear out the fans so that those with tickets for the 7:05 start can enter the stadium. It will be interesting.
