Back to that first ever game;
there was a sound recording (available years ago on a vinyl LP) of various
Mets highlights and I recall a one of our original announcers (Lindsey I
believe) calling that first inning balk by saying (to my memory) 'that the
Mets have given up their first run in history on a balk
'
But according to that play-by-play (I'm assuming from Retrosheet) there
was already a run in prior to the balk.

So something's wrong here;
1) my memory of the call
2) the call itself
3) the synopsis above

I think maybe KC and/or Dickshot may have a copy of that recording.
Any help on this?

This obsession with crap from the past is simply sick.

I have since learned that at least some of those recordings were faked, or re-created for that record, and the "balk" call was one of them. Pretty sloppy mistake by everyone involved.

And then it becomes part of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" syndrome

When the Legend becomes truth, print the Legend!

So it becomes a funny anedocte based on the Mets inepitude that season, in other words "The 62 Mets were so bad it HAS to be true!"

I agree that alot of it gets superferlous, especially with RetroSheet.org doing exact PBP of every game, but if it can show errors in simple things, like the legend about the Mets giving up their first run on a balk, it can correct oft-repeated tales that are pure fiction or half-truths.

Sure in the grand scheme of things its pretty meaningless, who cares if the Mets first run giving up was a balk, homerun, third-strike WP, or whatever, the 1962 Mets were a horrid baseball team period, but correcting little things that can easily be researched (just go to any library that has NYT archives, or in St Louis, the Dispatch or Sporting News archives) rather than continuing to repeat "cute fuzzy" ancedotes are good for setting record straight.

Especially if you want to make the point that the 1962 Mets were not a lovable, clownish bad baseball team which is probably why the balk story gets repeated, but rather a horrid blight of a team that should be remebered as a crappy way to kick off the Mets franchise history

Hey Bret, one thing, apparantly its because of CRAP FROM THE PAST that is making the sham of steriods become the sham of steroids.

Think about it, would we have this national debate if Roger Maris' record wasn't obliterated by Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds? Or if Bonds wasn't chasing down Ruth and Aaron?

I mean it was a fucking topic in the media about a fucking retarded hitting streak being over two seasons or not, AND IT NEVER GOT TO 40 GAMES! COULD THEY HAVE AT LEAST WAITED TILL ROLLINS GOT TO 46 TO GO "OH, MAYBE WE SHOULD DO SOMETHING SO PEOPLE WILL STOP ASKING WHAT WE SHOULD DO?" And you know what NO BODY GAVE A SHIT EITHER WAY, ESPECIALLY SINCE ROLLINS FAILED TO HIT 40 STRAIGHT!

No where else, not football, not basketball where believe me steriods is very prevelant. You think Walter Payton died because of a rare kindey disorder? You think Reggie White died simply because of sleep aemia? Why aren't Rice and TO looked at hard by investegators, only Romanoski was the only "name" NFLer involved with the BALCO mess and that was "swept under the rug" ya know why? BECAUSE NO ONE GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT THE PAST IN THE NFL OR NBA! BECAUSE NO ONE KEEPS TRACK OF SHIT OR NEEDS TO KNOW

Yes I'm ranting on you and agreeing with you at the same time! B-R.com has a football and basketball sister site, and for some reason baseball-reference.com seems like a more complete, professional site while the other two, NOT SO MUCH! WHY? Because for some unknown reason, the fucking media has been ramming baseball down the nation's FUCKING THROATS about how fucking CHERRISHED the records are, how the game is a flowing river through time and other poetic pieces of horse manure.

Yes its sickening, yes its borderline sycopant when you consider baseball is the ONLY FUCKING SPORT where athletes of the past are STILL CONSIDERED THE GREATEST ATHLETES IN THE SPORT, NOT OF THEIR TIME, BUT TODAY AS WELL!

Ah but what the fuck do you expect from a game that felt the need to inshrine the guy who INVENTED STATS AND HOW TO FUCKING TAKE SCORE INTO THE HALL OF FAME! Henry Fucking Chadwick! THATS the reason for all of this, for RetroSheet.org for CRAP FROM THE PAST! No where else, hell where is the Bill James of basketball? Hmmm? Is there a Rob Neyer of football?

Let me answer that, NO. Because stats mean shit in those sports! Because numbers aren't CHERRISED, because its ALL ABOUT TODAY ALL ABOUT THE NEXT GAME, its not about what happened YESTERDAY, and this is another reason why baseball is on the deathbed, STOP GIVING A RATS ASS ABOUT THE FUCKING PAST AND THINK ABOUT THE PRESENT AND THE GODDAMN FUTURE!

It's even worse than you're suggesting, since they never balked a run across the plate. On the second run, the runners moved up a base because of the balk but just to second and third, whence they came home on a groundout. So even if that were the first run, it could hardly be attributed to a balk call. Ultimately, perhaps, but ultimately the first run began when Musial's mother got pregnant.
