If so, here's my list:

3. War Pigs/Luke's Wall
4. Iron Man
5. After Forever
6. Snowblind
7. Sweet Leaf
8. Planet Caravan
9. Children of the Grave
10. Black Sabbath

I hold nothing against Dio. They just seem like 2 completely different Black Sabbaths. If anyone wants to challenge me with Dio's Sabbath Stuff, I'm game for it.

Intraband challenges have been unsuccessful and distracting..

It would have been fun to have a lone Dio-era song against the lone Hagar-era song.

I'm stickin' my nose where it don't belong. They were quite different just
as Van Hagar was in it's own right.

Cooby rocking the metal vote. Nice.

"Paranoid" vs. "Beautiful Girls" VH
"The Wizard" vs. "Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love" Black Sabbath
"War Pigs/Luke's Wall" vs. "Panama" VH
"Iron Man" vs. "Finish What Ya Started" VH - Had to throw the lone Hagar representative a bone.
"After Forever" vs. "Unchained" Sabbath
"Snowblind" vs. "You Really Got Me" Sabbath
"Sweet Leaf" vs. "Dance The Night Away" VH - Loved VH II. Loved it.
"Planet Caravan" vs. "Everybody Wants Some" VH
"Children of the Grave" vs. "Runnin’ With the Devil" VH
"Black Sabbath" vs. "And the Cradle Will Rock" VH

No NIB? No Changes? No Hole In The Sky? No Evil Woman? That's 7-3 VH, even without enough Hagar songs. Any of those four Sabbath songs would have beaten "Unchained" or "Everybody" or "Cradle" in my mind.

"Paranoid" vs. "Beautiful Girls"
--Black Sabbath.

"The Wizard" vs. "Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love"
--I didn't know 'Wizard' was that song. That song is cool. Sabbath in an upset.

"War Pigs/Luke's Wall" vs. "Panama"
--Van Halen

"Iron Man" vs. "Finish What Ya Started"
--Easy Black Sabbath win

"After Forever" vs. "Unchained"
--Van Halen. Great background singing they had.

"Snowblind" vs. "You Really Got Me"
--BS was really just heavy blues band, no? Sabbath.

"Sweet Leaf" vs. "Dance The Night Away"
--DTNA was the song that made me take notice of Van Halen. DLR's shreik-y vocal effect (and you see her/From ah-CROUS! the room)" was overdone but sounded cool back in the early 80s.

"Planet Caravan" vs. "Everybody Wants Some"
--Sabbath can't compete with dancing hamburger video. VH

"Children of the Grave" vs. "Runnin’ With the Devil"
--Tie. I like the rythym of the former and the singing of the latter.

"Black Sabbath" vs. "And the Cradle Will Rock"
--Van Halen

VH 5.5, Black Sabbath 4.5 That surprised me. Of course, VH is handicapped in any match with Hagar tunes and Kinks covers by my estimation.

Sorrry not to have gotten a vote in. I was consulting with my friend Dave. In a small part of his mind, he's a former member of both these bands. But he's in academia, and he approaches the great questions with deliberation.

Dude,

This is gonna require about a week --

but let me just start off with "Paranoid" v. "Beautiful Girls"

If the criterion is the extent to which these songs manifest the
"signature" sound of each band -- then they are absolutely equal

"Paraniod" IS Black Sabbath === blues-driven, relentlessly pounding
dismal-sounding bass-driven hard-life-livin metallic valium with just a
slight shot of cocaine

"Beautiful Girls" IS Van Halen === DLRoth's burlesque carnival-like tone
or sonic-set-up -- excellent and tasty gutiar lick-hook --
stutter-bob-and-weave rhythym guitar track -- EDDIE VH STYLE ---
brilliantly fast and manic guitar solo BY THE MASTER EDDIE VH ---- great
backing vocals behind the chorus AHHHH-YEAHHHH BEAUTIFUL GIRLS !!!!!!
David Lee Roth spoken section --- "I love'em -- I need'em -- hey wait a
minute where ya goin' ?? -- sit yourself ooonnn down"
Party-sound -- clean and flawless production (pristine-sounding like RUSH
and STEELY DAN"
every song makes the listener feel like the members of VanHalen are at
your very own backyard birthday party for your 18th birthday -- replete
with bikini-clad women

They are not, however, equal when it comes to content.

There are millions of party songs about "Beautiful Girls" -- but only a
few about the intensity of mental illness --- (see "Manic Depression" )

ROUND ONE --- BLACK SABBATH
