The Masters

I know no one cares about this except for Rockin Doc and me, but Masters sunday is one of the great watches in the sports year.

Starting with the fact that that piece of real estate is just stupid/gorgeous - to their self-imposed 4 minutes of commercials per hour limit - it's the best golf on TV. There are just so many holes where the golfers can either make great scores or fall of a cliff, and so many places where a difference in a few yards of landing area can mean a birdie is likely ... or impossible. No other tourney seems to have that kind of risk/reward balance so nakedly on display. And while this one didn't have the back-n-forth lead changes that have been almost common in recent years, there were still enough almost changes about every 5 minutes that it was still compelling until about 2 holes from the end.

Phil Mickelson wins his 2nd in 3 years, his 2nd major in a row, and his 3rd major of the last 9 played. Not bad for guy who was labeled a choking dog for years on end.

Was really hoping Freddy C would pull it out, but he putted like me today. He would have been the oldest winner ever if he dropped a couple of those 3 footers he blew.

The Masters is always great theater. This year the top five players in the world started the final round within 4 shots of the lead, on a course capable of bringing any of them to their knees. Of course, any time Fred Couples is on the leaderboard it's reason for golf fans to celebrate. Mickelson simply played brilliantly yesterday and refused to give his pursuers much hope on the final holes.

Augusta National is some of the most beautiful real estate in America. A truly unique venue for a sporting event.

Sentimental sucker that I am, I loved hearing "Daddy won!"

The Masters rules.

I have this computer golf game (Links 2003) and yesterday morning I downloaded and "played" Augusta National, just to get an idea.

The 13th is a beautiful yet murderous bitch, by the way.

I only watch the last hour of golf coverage on Sundays.

No drama this time.

The funny thing about the Masters is that, between the automatic bid to amateurs and past champions, half the field has no realistic shot at winning. But they know clearly know their audience and how they love the past champions, and the TV stays with these non-contender guys, cutting away from the leaders to show the old guys strugging to save par every hole. With luck, one or two (Ben Crenshaw this year) make the cut, but as they fall deep back in the field on Sunday, the TV will still cut back to them occasionally.

It's not a very good parallel (there is none), but just imagine in the late innings of a playoff game, Tim McCarver saying, "We're going to cut away for a minute now and see how Teddy Higuera is doing in the Mexican League."

I love the Masters. I was rooting for Couples too. Partially because some of the experts earlier in the week basically said the new changes would make it impossible for guys like Couples to have a chance.

Vijay Singh is the only guy in the world that looks bored at the Masters.

Question, what happens if there is a repeat winner? Do you put the jacket on yourself?
