On my political BB, much discussion of whether Cheney was really booed, and how much. Anyone there? Anyone have a first hand report?

Delgado opts to stand far from Cheney

BY ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

WASHINGTON - Carlos Delgado's opposition to U.S. military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan are well documented. But the first baseman took a tactful approach when Dick Cheney visited the Mets' clubhouse yesterday, before the VP tossed out the ceremonial first pitch at the Nationals' home opener.
Delgado conveniently got busy with pregame preparations as his teammates posed for a picture with Cheney.

"I was doing my routine," Delgado said with a smile. "I happened to be somewhere else. Go figure."

The Mets' clubhouse recently had been a Republican stronghold, with Al Leiter an aspiring GOP politician and Mike Piazza last year referring to Rush Limbaugh as "American royalty." It's not exactly left-leaning now, but Cliff Floyd identified himself as a Democrat and Xavier Nady said he grew up in a Democratic household.

Nady had the VP sign a bat, but later joked: "I'll probably use it tomorrow. It depends how many I go through." At least, the right fielder presumably was joking.

Cheney was greeted by more jeers than cheers in the nation's capital as he walked onto the field. Standing on the grass in front of the mound, the VP bounced the ceremonial first pitch to Nats catcher Brian Schneider, the baseball veering slightly to the left.

Willie Randolph reminisced about President George W. Bush's emotional first pitch at Yankee Stadium before Game 3 of the 2001 World Series. The President fired a strike to backup catcher Todd Greene after warming up in the Yankees' batting cage. He then shook hands with Rudy Giuliani during a poignant moment.

"I still think the President's throw was the best I've seen," said Randolph, then a Bombers coach. "He threw a strike right down the middle after 9/11. That was awesome. No one is going to be able to top that."

Salon had a good piece on the flap over the Cheney reception:

]The Post gets an asterisk
After a wave of "What game were you watching?" questions from the blogosphere, the Washington Post has changed its tune on the chorus of boos that welcomed Dick Cheney to the Washington Nationals' home opener Tuesday.

As we noted yesterday, the Post's initial staff-written report on Cheney's appearance suggested that the booing erupted only after the vice president's ceremonial first pitch came up short. "The first pitch of the Washington Nationals' second season at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium was low and away, bouncing in the dirt before being scooped up by catcher Brian Schneider," the Post's David Nakamura wrote. "For that, Vice President Cheney received a round of boos from the home crowd this afternoon."

But it wasn't "for that" that Cheney was booed. The catcalls began the moment that Cheney stepped onto the field, a fact that the Post is now acknowledging in a longer, reworked version of Nakamura's story. The story now says that Cheney was "booed by some as he walked to the mound" and then "got even more catcalls after his throw."

That's closer to the truth, and the Post doesn't need to look far to get the real scoop. An Associated Press story posted on the Post's Web site makes it clear that Cheney was "greeted" by boos, and the Post's own Reliable Source column says that Cheney "drew boisterous boos from the moment he stepped on the field until he jogged off."

You could look it up. But who would do that?

Delgado snubbed Chaney.

Anna would have given him a lap dance.

And a heart attack.

I read somewhere that he registered a 87.654 on the boo index from the
moment he took the field. This surprises the crap out of me, afterall he's
such a popular public figure. I'm also surprised that there are political BB's
out there relishing such a high figure and others saying that such an index
is off-the-charts impossible.

The Post delivered here at 7:30 says he was booed on is way off the field, not claiming it was a consequence of ball-skipping

Anyway, with all the perks he's getting, and at taxpayer expense, he should be able to handle the boos without whining! Maybe if we boo him he'll be a better Vice President!

We pay him to torture people! Why is he attending a baseball game? He should be out torturing people!!

Some White House correspondent/apologist was on Imus this morning and she kept referring to "mixed cheers and boos" and Imus would interrupt saying that the level of boos to cheers was enormous. She disputed that over and over again and used the booing was based on bad pitch line as well. Maybe she got the early edition of the Post.

How many times do we have to defend Piazza against your ridiculous accusations, Sal?

While yes, Piazza tragically listens to Rush Limbaugh (and enjoys it), that's just one aspect of Piazza's political leanings. In the (far more important) categories of Voting for Democrats, Supporting the Right to Choose, and Being Outraged By the War In Iraq, Piazza's at least average.

And let's not forget Piazza's bold move to the Left Coast with all the femi-Nazi's and illegal immigrants--clearly a covert jab at Rush.

Jesus, Sal, read between the lines a little.

This thread just begs for some shit to start. I'm a registered Independent.
I vote very conservatively locally and I get more liberal as the body of gov't
gets bigger. I find politics in this country extremely full of crap and both ex-
treme sides make me want to me puke. Anyone who sits anywhere and can't
wait for shit to happen to Bush and Cheney and pine for the days of Clinton
and Gore or thought Kerry and whoever would be better makes me equally
nause, er nausa, sick.

That's all I have to say on politics and have a pleasant Passover.

can kill a baseball board in a couple of weeks if it gets out of hand.

it wasn't you that made me bite my tongue this time. i agree that 90% of politicians on both sides of the aisle are just full of shit.

i adore dick cheney, i actually wish he was president. he may be my favorite current politician. i like him primarily because i don't feel like he is demagogue who would tell me what i want to hear, and i think he only seeks power because he is interested in applying his solutions to whatever. i think this is different than most politicians in they most will do whatever to be in power to be liked and respected.

i feel like dick cheney doesnt give a damn if he is liked, and he has a sort-of angry sincerity to him which i like. i should shut up and stick to reading about baseball.

I thought it was funny too, and my snide response is unecessary. When I
read martin's post when the first time, I drew many of the same conclusions
that some might parallel to a job, a family, a forum.

I fear political stuff here, it got really out of hand some other places. I don't
care what everyone's politics are, I'd rather argue over booing.

And for the second time today, that's all I have to say.

That forumite could easily be many people but just as easily me. I'm over-
opinionated, I like to argue, and easily goaded into all types of confrontation.
I'm also outnumbered here 10-1

Someone get me Hillary on line 2, I wanna see how she's coming along with
