Helluva job BVW. One of the reasons that he traded for Diaz is to block the Phillies but here, he made no effort (that we heard of) to keep Wheeler after he became a FA. He also could have traded Wheeler last season and got more than the 80th pick in the draft (counter: the Mets challenged for the WC spot and we had a fun two months). I'm awaiting a quote from BVW saying "this is why we acquired Stroman".

Am I the only one who thinks that maybe, just maybe, 5 years at about $24 million per is a little rich for an almost 30 year old pitcher who has never had an ERA below 3.30 in a pitcher friendly park?

The Mets DO need another good pitcher. And it makes sense to get the best that they can get, but hell, go grab Ryu for less/shorter and I'll be over losing Wheeler real fast.

Yeah, this. I'm for going all in on Cole, but it's not my money. As for Ryu, yes he was helped by his defense and Wheeler was hurt by it, but he's still been a more effective pitcher when healthy. And his injury history is a concern, but so is Zack Wheeler's. I wouldn't have gone five years with Wheeler. But this might mean that the market is going to be a lot more aggressive this year (despite less high-end star power), so the Mets had better be prepared to act accordingly or get buried.

Word from Sox fans is that the White Sox reportedly offered Zack Wheeler more money than the Phillies and he turned it down. Wheeler's wife is from New Jersey, so they wanted to stay closer to family. I have zero linkable evidence for this, but as our president says, "people are saying", "I hear", etc.

Could be a back/front loaded thing. more buyouts, who knows.

Bumgarner has never had an ERA over 4, and he's treated like a has-been. He'll be ace-caliber again if he gets the home runs in check.

As would I... but injury history/arm mileage does have SOMETHING to do with the wariness, too. He's been a different dude since the dirt bike dust-up two years ago (lower fastball velocity, significantly fewer K/9)... if he's performing at this level now, he's not worth 22M/year over 4-5 years; if this is just him working his way back in extended fashion from the 2017 injury, and you think he's got brighter days ahead, THEN you give him the money.

Wheeler is better than Bumgarner. He's just only really done it for two years, but those years were as good as any Bumgarner's had since 2016. Madison did have a bit of a bounceback last year, but his numbers have all been worse the last three years, and it's not easy to expect it's part of a decline. Last year he did get his contact numbers back down, some more swinging strikes, and even a bit more velocity than 2017,2018. Lots more value from his fastball, per norm. There's some speculation that maybe he wasn't 100% those two years, but still some risk there. the improve velocity isn't back to pre-injury levels and it's not something you really think will get there at this point. Still be happy to have him around though, just not for that length of contract.
