Marisnick is not a very good hitter, though I hear he's a terrific fielder.

If given the choice, I would have preferred Kevin Pillar.

Negative WAR for hitting, positive WAR for fielding.

So Lagares for Lagares and 2 minor leaguers.

Actually Marisnick is like a premium-tier Lagares the "Signature Select" beans vs. the national-brand equivalent

Hey, it's business as usual in free agency for the BINO (Big Market team in Name Only). We get Marisnick, lose Wheeler and, of course, pass on Cole because we're not allowed to sign the very best players. And Michael Cohen might be, oh my, worse than the Wilpons.

Taylor was the guy we received for Ike Davis IIRC

Re: Jake Factor +++++

That's right. Taylor has bad career numbers, but maybe figured it out in 2019. 2.16 ERA, 1.095 WHIP over three levels. Walks a lot, but strikes out a lot too. Was just protected for the Rule 5, so not a throw away pick. I don't know Kennedy Corona.

Because Marisnick is actually a defensive whiz and Pillar is meh? Grab the better guy for a role if you can get him.

As long as the Wilpons continue to Wilpon.

This was a reasonable move for a reasonable 5th OFer.

Yeah, this was all about replacing a borderline major leaguer with a 5th outfielder. Yeah, that's the ticket. So long as you ignore the part about the Mets losing out on two top flight free agent pitchers including a reigning Cy Young award winner -- Jake deGrom's bookend. We could've made history by fielding both reigning CYA winners but we're stuck with the Wilpons which, according to you, we're not allowed to talk about because it doesn't matter.

And good riddance. I can't believe that all those cyber-trees were killed on words for Lagares over the years. A center-fielder, no less. That can barely outhit pitchers. My, how NY has fallen from the days of Mickey, Willie and The Dook. It's unimaginable how much traction a player could get from a Gold Glove won eons ago. Shades of Bernard Gilkey.

Gilkey had but one good year for the Mets. Granted, it was a tremendously good one good year. But he sucked after that. Like, really sucked. Thus, the Lagares comparison.

The point I was making was about players still getting playing time past their expiration dates. Lagares hasn't fielded like he did in his GG days for a while now. And Gilkey sucked other than in '96.

yes, literally. That's what the thread is about, the Mets acquiring another Jake.

Whether or not they sign Ryu is not impacted by this in any way.

Re: Jake Factor +++++

Gilkey had one of the best seasons in Mets history, then played poorly for 1.5 years after that before going to AZ. Players do sometimes get to play after they've stopped being productive because they were productive at one time. Lagares, however, is an example of a guy who got time even though he was NEVER productive. He had a mediocre season (OPS+102) and won a GG in his 2nd year. He then went on to play parts of 5 more years without even achieving mediocrity. The 2 cases are not analogous. There are few cases analogous to Lagares, who was given a long-term deal because of potential that never developed, yet they kept running him out there.

I totally agree with your analysis and I even recognized it as I was making the Gilkey analogy in the earlier Lagares post. I made the analogy anyway because to this day, Gilkey's bad Met years still resonate powerfully with me. I remember clamoring really bad for Gilkey's playing time to be reduced as he was sucking in real time. But I get it. Gilkey deserved and got the benefit of the doubt because his 1996 season was too damn good and not so far removed from his decline. And a manager in that situation has the right to believe it's just a temporary slump.

He is a "never was" who will never be even a "might be".

But I guess for the near term, you need a center fielder or (to paraphrase Casey Stengel) "You're gonna' give up a lot of triples".
