Mets of the Teen-Ages

Whether a decade starts with year ending in 0 or 1 will always be debatable, but they are generally defined by their 10s place. So in that spirit, it's the last day of the decade, which — why not? — invites a look over the shoulder.

I was unsure how to format the teams. I ranked evahbody by fWAR, and I was going to go with a typical 25-man roster of 12-ish pitchers and 13-ish hitters, but that left us without a backup catcher, and I was surprised how quickly the relievers were falling off even at seven (Takahashi?). So I made it a 12-man staff, but included full first- and second-team selections on offense. Yeah, it's arbitrary, but it's not like there's money involved.

Intrestingly, over the last decade, the team seems most wanting in center and at catcher (despite d'Arnaud's 100% stealing rate), which is kind of where they are most wanting right now.

Re: Mets of the Teen-Ages`

It would appear by fwar that deGrom is the Mets of the decade, David Wright 2nd and Syndergaard 3rd.

Syndegaard, really?? wow

Re: Mets of the Teen-Ages`

Cumulative totals like fWAR refWARd both health and longevity.

Also, depending on how aggressively you weight them, including post-season performances might push Murphing USA into third.

Re: Mets of the Teen-Ages

Worth noting that Hisanori Tak's numbers reflect his work only as a reliever in 2010. He was meaningfully less effective (5.01 ERA in 64 2/3 innings) as a starter.

That doesn't explain quite why he got a release at the end of his only Metly season, but the raise he was due as an NPB veteran was probably part of the equation. This was back in the austerity times.

Re: Mets of the Teen-Ages

They got off two big schneids in the 2010s — getting their first-ever batting-average title and first no-hitter.

And first-ever 50-home-run season!

Also notable: THREE Cy Young Awards!

Re: Mets of the Teen-Ages

And two RoYs.

Fun fact: Since 2012, the Mets have placed a pitcher in the Cy Young voting in seven of eight years. And that one season without a showing was 2014 — deGrom's RoY campaign.
