Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

Most recently a catching instructor for Miami, but has some minor league managing experience.

Along with Beltran and Hefner, the Mets are really reaching back to the sunset of the black-wearing years.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

I've said this before lots of times but to me Schneid was one of the biggest disappointments for the Mets. I was excited about him having seen the way he played when he was a youngun with Montreal/Washington: Really took charge the way you want a catcher to, could change the game from behind the plate. But with the Mets it was like he lost that drive. He was probably more banged up than he ever let on but at times he looked the opposite of the steady-D, take-charge guy we thought we were getting. He came off almost lazy.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

He's no Fonzie, but he's got some Mets pedigree. He's like a less hammered Nelson Figueroa in that sense.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

D.J. Carrasco will be Schneider's pitching coach. As a Met reliever in 2011 and 2012, Carrasco was about as effective as Schneider was catching and hitting in 2008 and 2009. The Mets are building quite the “if you can't do, teach” staff at Syracuse.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

Perhaps Carrasco will be in the Mike Maddux mold of sucking as a Met reliever, enduring as a pitching sage.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

I have vague memories of it ending badly for Carrasco with the mets, like recriminations and such.

IIRC, he was sandy Alderson's first move as GM

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

Carrasco threw at Ryan Braun after giving up a home run to Rickie Weeks, causing Terry Collins to remove David Wright, who loomed as a target from Carrasco's violation of the code. Wright was upset because he thought he should stand in and absorb whatever the Brewers might be throwing to get even, which wouldn't have been necessary had Carrasco controlled himself.

Re: Syracuse on the Schneid

Carrasco gave up another homer in Cincy the next night and that was it.

The way I recall, he was pretty philosophical about his release, saying something like pitching terribly was no fun anyhow.

Anyhow, erstwhile St. Lucie manager Chad Kreuter is your new Syracuse manager, leaving the Mets skipperless in the Florida State League.
