Simple quiz here. Name the top 20 albums in the WNEW Listener poll of 1978 (as explained below, these are albums that were new to WNEW listeners in 1978). One guess per post, no double dips.

I assume this is an all-time thing, not a "Best of this Year" thing.

If the former, I guess Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

If the latter, I guess Some Girls.

Top 20 albums that came out in 1978 or top 20 classic rock albums of all-time as voted on in 1978?

Sorry for being imprecise. This is albums of 1978, or at least those played "new" on WNEW that year (some may be late 77 or even early 79 releases, not entirely sure of dates.)

Got it. 1978 was the year that a lot of so-called "new wave" acts broke through on classic rock radio.

I'm going to risk picking a 1977 album, because it came out late in that year and might've gotten more classic rock airplay in 1978 than anything.

Ah, 1978. My parents moved me from Brooklyn to Staten Island just before my 14th birthday. And I still haven't forgiven them. I sublimated my sorrows by buying Who Are You at the Majors on Forest Avenue.

Michigan's version of Bruce is Bob Seger. "Stranger in Town" came out that year.

1978 was a rough year. Making that transition from junior high to high school, and high school sucked. Mets sucked. Yankees won and took a bandwagon of fans. I tried to like Pat Zachary, but he was no Seaver.

Re: Classic Rock Kwiz: 1978!!

My personal issue is how time has blended into a mass making it difficult to pick a year out of the stew. This could be due to my overindulgence of a certain herb starting in the late '60s and that I pretty much have forgotten most of the '80s. The other thing: back in the day I had no idea there would be tests in the next century. Trying to go by my personal tastes is a bad strategy because I was never much of a mainstream guy. Plus, that moving/work thing. I didn't really collect much because it's a pain to move stuff. Had to depend on whatever local radio that was not too obnoxious. The other other thing: although I spent time in Eastern Canada, I never lived in the US east coast time zone. I suspect regional preferences vary. Still, I'm gonna give these quizzes a shot and see what sticks to the wall.

It is, but as you'll see at the end, it's authentic. I think what happens in these listener polls is whatever's hot at the moment rises to the top, whether or not they stand the test of time.

Dire Straights and REO didn't chart (the list goes to 40). Dire Straights however made a separate 8-artist "best new band" list at #7. (Cars were #1, Devo #5, and one of the impossible-to-guess album artists finished #2).

Re: Classic Rock Kwiz: 1978!!

I could see Devo finishing ahead of Jazz on a 1978 list but not on a list voted on by WNEW listeners. Queen had been getting regular rotational airplay on WNEW for years while Devo's 1978 debut had just one song that could have plausibly gotten airplay on WNEW (Satisfaction) and I don't think it did. WLIR, definitely but WNEW? I don't remember hearing Devo on that station in 1978. Maybe a few years later when Whip It came out.

My other 1978 album got a lot of WNEW airplay, but I'm positive it won't be on the list because it doesn't match any of the clues. There's no "Blues" clues -- and Lunchie woulda definitely also gave some Delaware themed clue for this album:

Move it on Over -- George Thorogood & The Delaware Destroyers

a "local" band

another RNRHOFer with a catalog effort

a kind of "supergroup" that could only form in 1978

an obscure gay band that's not the VP or the B52s

another RNRHOFer that was previously overguessed in this contest

Way to correctly guess STREET-LEGAL without actually guessing it, jackass.

It was a period when respect for Dylan ran so high (almost religiously) that he'd get votes just for showing up. And showing up with an actual pop-rock album, doubly so. Whether it's particularly good is an afterthought.

Which is ironic, because it was one of Bob's more assholey periods.

Left field guess: Is this the supergroup, or the "local" group?

Alas, there was a time when Ronstadt and Renaissance could co-exist on the radio with Bruce and the Who. Those were better days.

Neer was, in those days, (I believe) the program director which is likely why that list came via him.

In 1978 WNEW was still in what would be considered a 'Progressive' format even if on a somewhat more restricted compared to earlier years. Vin Scelsa, resident crotchety overnight guy, was

already complaining at this point about Neer and his adherence to the beancounters but the station wasn't yet in full slide towards 'Classic Rock' and the almost singles-oriented format that it

would eventually become by around the mid-80s. Within a handful of years they would have dropped more than a few artists from that list entirely [Renaissance, T. Robinson. P Cruise, Rafferty,

A. Stewart, K. Loggins and more] as if those artists/albums had never existed in the station's history. The majority of those albums which would remain in good graces still saw themselves

chopped down to one or two songs max.
