I'd often think about Buck Henry whenever I'd notice that SNL was having the newest flavor-of-the-week pop/TV star as guest host and how, even if there were a this generation's version of Buck, the current version

of SNL likely wouldn't let him in the building to watch the show much less lead it.

In my bookselling days, we had an event with special guest author Robert MacNeil. This was somewhat unusual, as partner Jim Lehrer was the far more prolific author, and he was the one based in DC, throwing the ball back and forth with MacNeil in New York. I imagined getting out of New York for a book tour was a nice little break for the anchored anchor.

And being that the store has a PBS-y clientele, it was a pretty big crowd, with a long line afterwards to get him to sign their volumes. I was in charge of folding up the chairs — what we called the Phillip Glass portion of the evening, as all these long awaited intimate conversations with your heroes would take place against the underscoring of random clangs of metal. And who do I spot at the very back of the line, but Jim Fucking Lehrer.

It struck me that these guys meet by broadcast every night but probably don't see each other in the flesh too often. Realizing he's a busy man, waiting patiently and alone at the back of a line that may be 20 minutes-to-a-half-hour from ending, I offered to get him a cup of coffee.

"No, thanks" he answered, "I think Bob and I going to be getting something a lot stronger."

It wasn't a great line, but it was warm and friendly enough that I read my way through the entire Jim Lehrer catalog. He apparently got his earliest jobs out of school working for Greyhound or some other inter-city bus outfit. And in fiction and non-fiction, he never stopped writing about buses.

I was going to mention the bus thing. It may have been his father working for some bus company that triggered the interest, I can't recall at this point, but Jim remained a 'bus freak' for the remainder of his life

and could accurately recite the announcements of the various stops on given lines (... with stops in Houston, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Lincoln); he'd do it for Imus during his various visits.

He even went out and bought himself an old passenger bus at one point and worked on keeping it in running order. Like to know who the lucky person is to score that prize in the will.

Two writers involved in Spartacus, Howard Fast and Dalton Trumbo (who wrote under a pseudonym) had been on the Blacklist. Douglas wrote a book (when he was in his 90s) describing his role in breaking the Blacklist. But some say it was an overstatement:

We seem to have missed the death last week at the age of 78 of Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxoveni Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala, aka, Joseph Shabalala, the leader of the South African vocal/dance group

Ladysmith Black Mambazo. With a name like that I think he almost had to go into music and much of the group were Joseph's relatives.

Formed in South Africa during the 1960s, 'Ladysmith' released their first album in 1972 before later rising to world wide fame upon their collaboration with Paul Simon's 1986 album GRACELAND

Also a favorite of Nelson Mandela, they were invited by him to Norway sing when he received his 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. 17 Grammys were to follow.

The current version of the group, which includes four of his sons, just played in Patchogue two weeks ago. The group was constructed so that people could come in and out, or hang around a while (the longest-serving member of the current line-up joined in 1969), but the basic idea would remain the same. But they acknowledged more than once during the show that it was Joseph Shabalala's vision.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

Right? NASCAR was a celebration of badass American drivers, but there was always a secondary love for the engineering that could squeeze another horse out of a stock motor.

After Dale Earnhardt's death, all their brainpower went into structural engineering — making cars that could crash-land from space and keep the driver from getting torn apart or flattened. It's been an impressive and under-celebrated success. The downside is that the cars sacrificed a lot on aerodynamics. They flow like bricks, but lighter-weight, spongier bricks, so they're certainly harder to handle, but that has helped give the people what they want — more crashes, but fewer cripplings and fatalities.

It also has created a class of more professional drivers.

Did I just do a hot take? I hates hot takes.

Years ago, he was touring with Branford, and for the only time in my life, we scored front row, dead center tickets for a show. It was in a beautiful Detroit Theater, the Fox. My wife liked the CD of the two of them playing and was excited I could score tickets like that. It was one of those times when I could get to the Ticketmaster before the window opened and was first in line.

Everything went wrong. The babysitter was really, really late. Long construction detour. Even got stuck forever at a train crossing. We got to the show about 10 minutes late, with an usher helping us to the seats, my wife softly crying. I looked up, and there's Branford, only about 10 feet away, shaking his head.

I was crushed. I just wanted to say, "Dude, if you only knew what it took to get here!"

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

Brown was said to be suffering from dementia, whether age related (82) or football related ... likely both.

Dr. Oliver 'Spearchucker' Jones -- the nickname was from throwing the javelin -- was character in the book, movie, and TV versions of M*A*S*H. But the character simply disappeared from the TV show

during the first season never to be revived -- maybe he's hanging out with Richie Cunningham's older brother -- so Brown appeared in just six episodes.

Brown was coincidently in the M*A*S*H movie also although not as 'Spearchucker', that version was played by another former NFL player* Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson. Williamson is also 82 and is

not only still around but is still acting. Not that I've actually ever heard of any of his recent projects, but there are a number of them and he's got a bunch more currently in production. Let's hope Fred

is well and that the same coincidence that befell the movie and TV Henry Blakes -- the actors playing those roles died just one day apart even though both were just in their '60s -- doesn't strike again.

* Other one-time NFL'ers to appear (though uncredited) for the rival '325th Evac' team in the football scene in M*A*S*H included such 1960's notable names as: Ben Davidson, Fran Tarkinton, Buck Buchanan, Johnny Unitas and Joe Kapp

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

I got the idea that the original premise of the M*A*S*H* series had them as a much bigger unit with the principals being just a few of the dozens of surgeons assigned to the 4077. As the show developed, it pared down to a combat hospital with just the four surgeons.

Yeah, but it's more than news. It's global security. It's also a market factor

Any other president would announce, "We are aware of the rumors and reports, and ..."

"... our sources cannot yet confirm the situation."

or

"... our sources have confirmed the situation, and are confident at this hour that Mr. Kim is dead/alive."

or, most likely

"... our sources are pursuing as much information as possible, and we will be keeping the nation and our allies briefed on the situation going forward as details unfold."

That last one is most likely because it's probably what they'd say whether they knew or not.

But this president only makes things worse with public announcements, so he's instead going to watch FOX and humiliate himself on Twitter.

Ronan O'Rahilly, the inspiration for the charming movie Pirate Radio, 79.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/03/arts/music/ronan-orahilly-dead.html

It was on the Saturday before Easter 1964 that Radio Caroline sent out its opening salvo, the Rolling Stones' cover of Buddy Holly's “Not Fade Away,” from a rehabilitated Dutch ferry anchored three miles off the coast of England. For British teenagers, used to a bland diet of children's programs, 1950s ballads and farm news on the BBC — also known by the nickname Auntie — it was a revelation.

And Ronan O'Rahilly, the roguish Irish entrepreneur and showman behind Radio Caroline, who was then just 23, made sure that his operation would become the most famous of the pirate radio stations run from a ragtag armada of ships moored in international waters when the BBC had a monopoly on the airwaves.

Mr. O'Rahilly died on April 20 at a nursing home in County Louth, outside Dublin. He was 79. His partner, Ines Rocha Trindade, who confirmed the death, said he had learned he had vascular dementia in 2013.

Charismatic, deeply eccentric — he was a committed conspiracy theorist and often went by a pseudonym — and with a flair for the grand gesture, Mr. O'Rahilly was at the center of the music scene in London in the early 1960s, or tried to be. He had left his home outside Dublin at 17, worked checking coats in a London night spot, and was soon running his own club, the Scene.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

One Shula story I heard a bunch of years ago epitomized how he fit the stereotyped tunnel-vision that football coaches were known to have.

He was with the Dolphins and it was the era when MIAMI VICE was not only all the rage on TV but in pop culture as well and particularly so in south Florida. I had a buddy

living there at the time and he'd tell me that about 75% of the young males in the area were dressing themselves like Don Johnson's character, right down to the three-

day stubble.

So at one point a couple of the show's stars got access into the Dolphin facility and were introduced to Shula as being from MIAMI VICE. He gave them each a quick

handshake and muttered something along the lines of: 'Thanks, you guys do a great job', and quickly turned right back to his work. He was thinking there were actual

Vice cops from the city because he was too single-minded to have ever heard of the TV program much less watched it.

Or to have realized that, you know, when it's the eighties in Miami, and The Miami Sun won't lead with a murder story unless it's at least a triple, the actual Miami vice squad probably wasn't doing as great a job as all that.

Although, I'm sure their budget was a fraction of the TV show's.

This surprisingly self-effacing anecdote has always stayed with me.

Here's the one amusing story Shula likes to tell, as told by retired Sentinel columnist Larry Guest:

"Don Shula has been humbled only once in his life. After he coached the '72 Dolphins to a 17-0 record, he and his late wife, Dorothy, vacationed in a small town in Maine. Entering a movie theater, they received an ovation from the few people already in the theater. Shula begged off, explaining he didn't expect special treatment just because of who he is. Said one of the moviegoers: 'We don't care who you are. They wouldn't start the movie until we had 10 people here, and you two just put us over the top.'"

There's the guerilla activism of the outsider, and the wonky activism of the insider. Usually, at best, they drive each other crazy, but recognize the need for each other and maintain an unhappy marriage. At worst, they undermine each other and question each other's real commitment. The posts keep coming.

My Dad was a devoted athlete. He compared football to “Gladiator Boot Camp”, and called professional football the “Consummate War Game”. He told me that he was happy the small town where my sons were raised didn't have a football team, saying they would be smarter and kinder people without all that “physical combat.” None the less, he made his career through playing the game and learning about, then broadcasting every nuance. His articulate way of shining light on the players, coaches, and game strategies gave him steady employment in the broadcast industry from 1966 to 2019.

Phenomenal.

My Dad possessed charisma and talent as an actor, model, published author, singer, and teacher. Most people associate him with his athleticism, but as a little girl he taught me to recite Shakespeare and to sing Broadway Musicals like Camelot and The Sound of Music. He taught me how to play chess and how to dance every style from the waltz to the twist. He loved classical music and literature and could have been an expert movie critique. Dad had so much going for himself, but In our last conversation together he reminded me that worldly success was no guarantee of happiness. In his case, fame and fortune nearly brought his early demise. Plagued by addiction to “booze and pills” spawned by football injuries and depression, he joined Alcoholics Anonymous and took his first step on the road to recovery. With over 45 years in the program, his devotion to living clean and sober meant more to him than any of his worldly accomplishments. As a leader by nature, he sponsored many recovering addicts and loved his Bay Area 12 Step family as his own.

A couple of athletes this week who were at the top of their sport in their eras but time and the marginalization of their sports sent both into obscurity for all but few.

Kurt Thomas, 64, of a stroke, was America's top male gymnast in the late 1970s. But he lacked the exposure of the Olympics due to the U.S. boycott in 1980 and even there time

has seen men's gymnastics increasingly pushed aside in coverage for the women's version so his time in the spotlight was brief and fleeting despite winning several world championships

at both floor ex and pommel horse and having moves named for him still used today. He at least kept his hand in the sport through coaching up until his death so was at least well known

within the gymnastics world.

Bobby Morrow (84) on the other hand I doubt is a name known to more than a handful even among track enthusiasts.

The white son of a carrot farmer from Texas, he dominated sprinting in the mid and late 1950s becoming, during the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956, the only man between Jesse Owens

('36) and Carl Lewis ('80) to triple gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100 relay (Owens & Lewis also won the long jump). In that day that got one on the covers of Sports Illustrated, Sport, and

Life magazines and also as a guest on the Ed Sullivan Show. But while track men before and after continued to be mentioned, his fade into obscurity was largely his own choice as he was ahead

of the curve in denouncing the treatment of athletes under the old 'amateur' rules and chose to separate himself from the sport after injuries and maybe politics kept him off the 1960 team.

He remains the last white American to win a sprint championship.

Reagan-era propaganda, dumb writing, wooden acting, creepy foreigners, sketchy budget, contrived situations, and lots of cheesy-but-remorseless violence in one film. You can't ask for more. it's like it was made for Mystery Science Theater adaptation.

My Pete Hamill story.

My dad's partner in his squad car for, I think, 15 years was Patrolman Jim Crowley. Jim had grown up in the same neighborhood as Hamill, and I believe Pete had dated Jim's sister.

Hamill and Jimmy Breslin were required reading for anybody who worked the streets of New York, and one day, as Jim was driving, my dad read him Hamill's tabloid column out loud. The subject of the day was ... crappy cops.

As dad read each case cited of what they both knew were legit complaints, Jim got more pissed, saying, "That son of a BITCH!" after each one.

Jim was a good cop — a VERY good cop, according to his colleagues — but took it to heart when each case was cited because he heard it as Hamill indicting the whole NYPD. "That son of a BITCH!" he barked, seeing each indictment by Hamill as a personal betrayal, but my dad kept smiling as Jim's face turned more tomato-colored, because when he got to the end, the final paragraph included a sentence along the lines of "None of these disgraces are worthy of wearing the same uniform and badge as Patrolman Jim Crowley of Brooklyn's 63rd Precinct, a good, honorable cop if ever there was one. May we find more like him."

"SON OF A BITCH!!" Jim exclaimed, his rage suddenly turned to joy at this unexpected flattery.

My dad said every call they got the rest of the week, he'd tell his partner, "It's a good thing they called a good, honorable cop like you, Jim!"

If you read only one "How I came to be a newspaperman" memoir, you'd have a tough time doing batter than Hamill's A Drinking Life.

Godspeed, Pete Hamill.

Frayed Knot

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

My brief Hamill story revolves around the fact that he dabbled in art most of his life and considered trying to become a cartoonist prior to turning to writing, a fact which was enough to get him an invite to

a National Cartoonist Society outing once as an honored guest (I was a un-honored guest at this one). During his brief speech he mentioned once sending a fan letter to cartooning legend Milton Caniff

which sent my dad to seek him out after the dinner and say: 'That fan letter to Caniff ... I did the exact same thing' (dad was about 5 years older than Hamill so they were essentially contemporaries).

The other kicker to that night is that it happened to occur just days prior to the release of 'A DRINKING LIFE'. Yet not only did Hamill not make his attendance at this shindig contingent on his being able

to plug the book but, even given that a mere mention of it would have certainly been more than acceptable, he never uttered a word. He was a celeb who attended an outing because he was actually

honored to be invited and to be in the company of those who invited him, most of whom would have been totally unknown to him. Good on you Pete.

I read DRINKING LIFE shortly afterward.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

I had a busy day yesterday and missed the Pete Hamill news.

I imagine I'm not the only person who grew up in Brooklyn in the 70s and basically learned to read and write from Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill. I was always a light sleeper, and I'd wake up as soon as the Daily News banged up against the door of our apartment at 6:15 or so, grab the paper, look at the back page to see how the Mets did (or maybe the Knicks if it was winter), and then go straight to Breslin's or Hamill's column, depending on what day it was.

Breslin was the clown prince - the fat funny guy who was always half tanked (or more) and invented kooky caricatures like Un Occhio the mob boss and Klein the Lawyer. Hamill was the dry straight man who didn't need to create caricatures to write sharp, witty prose. I preferred Breslin when I was a kid, but Hamill wasn't for kids, even kids who read above their grade level. I didn't learn to appreciate Hamill quite as much until I got older and left New York, and would occasionally come across a Hamill story that reminded me of what I was missing.

RIP.

Shulman was regularly engaged in “friendly” wagers with Giuliani over Mets-MFYs series, as if she represented some out-of-town entity. In July of 1999, Matt Franco made a winner out of Claire.

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Queens Borough President Claire Shulman today entered into a friendly wager on the outcome of this weekend's subway series between their respective favorite baseball teams -- the Yankees and the Mets. The teams will face-off against one another in the first of a three game series tonight at Shea Stadium. The Mayor and Borough President Shulman placed the wager on this morning's broadcast of "Live From City Hall…With Rudy Giuliani," the Mayor's weekly live radio show on WABC, 770 AM. The terms of the wager are outlined below.

Should the Mets lose, Borough President Claire Shulman will give the Mayor: · An unspecified quantity of Italian ices from the famed Lemon Ice King of Corona, located at 52-02 108th Street in Queens. · Hero sandwiches from the popular Corona, Queens deli, Leo's Latticini, located at 46-02 104th Street. · An undisclosed "surprise" from Borough President Shulman.

Should the Yankees lose, Mayor Giuliani will give Borough President Shulman: · An assortment of cheesecakes from S&S Cheesecakes, located at 222 West 238th Street in the Bronx. · A gift basket containing an assortment of Stella D'oro cookies, which have been manufactured in the Bronx since 1952 at 184 West 237th Street. · An assortment of Italian American cuisine from Frankie and Johnny's Pine Tavern, located at 1913 Bronxdale Avenue in the Bronx.

"The prospect of a Yankees/Mets World Series has all New Yorkers eagerly awaiting this weekend's three-game matchup between our home teams," the Mayor said. "Although Claire Shulman and I each have our favorite team -- and one of us will lose this friendly wager -- when it comes to the Mets and Yankees, the entire City wins big. The Mets and Yankees are both dominant teams in their respective leagues and every season, they are a constant source of pride for sports fans and non-sports fans alike. Let's hope that the weekend showdown between the Mets and the Yankees turns out to be a preview of this year's World Series."

Queens Borough President Claire Shulman said, "We are happy to host this series in Queens and look forward to a great match up that will result in a victory for the Mets. Good weather, combined with good pitching, will make for an exciting series for all New Yorkers. Let's go Mets!"

Anthony died this week. He was 63

Whattaya mean, which Anthony? The one who taught everyone of a certain age that Wednesday was Prince Spaghetti Day.

OK the young'uns here can now tune out and let the old folks wallow in youthful nostalgia cuz you have to be at least 50 to know all this.

So who was the actor playing Anthony Martingnetti, the Italian immigrant kid from the north end of Boston? Turns out it wasn't an actor at all but instead was a local Italian immigrant kid from the

north end of Boston named Anthony Martingnetti. Casting agents stumbled across 12 y/o Anthony while looking for a location to shoot a commercial and decided to cast him as himself. The gig paid

Anthony “several hundred dollars” after negotiations with his non-English speaking parents were made via Anthony's older brother as the interpreter.

Originally intended to be sold a macaroni association with the aim of broadening the appeal of pasta, the ad was rejected by them but then picked up by Prince where it ran, first in New England and

later nationally, for 14 years. Royalties from that run added up over the years to somewhere around $20,000 for Anthony.

No cause of death was given.

Anthony's ‘mother' in the ad was also played by a non-actor, a local who knew Anthony from the neighborhood. She died a few years back.

Interesting life. He was supposedly lifelong friends with Joe Pesci, but he appears to about 15 years older, so I don't know what that's about.

Quit the Seasons in 1970 and sold his piece of the name, and then he was broke by 1971. I imagine he died pretty wealthy in the end, though.

Fourth No. 1 hitmaker from 1972 (my seminal music year) to go in 2020 and the third in a very short time from the fall of ‘72. The son of a Maine hockey rink manager, he was on skates before he was two and grew into a true "rink rat" which earned him a scholarship to hockey powerhouse Boston University.

11 seconds into his first shift of his first game as a freshman, he tripped while checking an opponent and went head-long into the boards. The result broke his 4th and 5th vertebrae

and left him a quadriplegic.

He spent the remainder of his life as an advocate for spinal cord injury research and treatment through his eponymously named charity, as well as a motivational speaker.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

Weird seeing a guy on TV Friday who's gone by Sunday morning. And while I know that the show we saw Friday didn't actually occur on Friday, I would think if there had been a halt in taping that

such news would have leaked out at some point prior to now so the assumption is that Alex was still taping yet-to-be-aired shows as of early last week.

I looked for signs of illness as this new season started some 6-7 weeks ago and I thought maybe I detected a weakness in his voice although it's equally likely that I was imagining it simply from

the act of looking for it. I'm sure the show has somebody in mind to take over, at least on a temporary basis. It only makes sense to do so when your host is in his late 70s, as Trebek was when

he signed his last current three year contract, even before a diagnosis of deadly cancer surfaces.

I have just two slight Trebek connections.

One is that I once saw him play hockey at MSG. Back in the early/mid-'90s maybe there was some kind of celebration of North American/Swedish friendship and trade cooperation so various celebs

who were capable of lacing up a pair of skates -- and Alex was born and raised in Canada after all -- took part in a charity game prior to a regularly scheduled something to follow (likely a Ranger

game but I don't now remember).

The other is that his wife (the second one anyway) went to my High School. I didn't know her but my sister and mother both did. She was about my sister's age which would put her about 25

years younger than him. The less than flattering account that I got was that she moved west with the intention to marry some TV or film star and pretty much settled for a game show host.

But by all public accounts it was a good marriage that produced two (now adult) children and endured until his passing so I guess things all worked out.

Cheers Alex, ya had a good run.

Apparently the final shows were taped two weeks ago so I guess things took a turn for the worse this past week and so no shows were taped.

Xmas falls on a Friday this year so that makes it a full seven weeks of shows left.

Winning streak champ Ken Jennings has been mentioned before as a possible replacement and he joined the Jeopardy staff as a 'consultant' just a few months back so he could

be the logical choice as at least the interim host which would then give them until next summer to decide on either Jennings or someone else as the permanent dude or dudette.

In an era when the reigning Decathlete champion was frequently cited as the world's best athlete, Johnson won a Silver in the 1956 Olympic Games (at age 22) then the Gold in 1960 clinching the

event by running his personal best in the final-event 1500 meters and gaining a narrow victory against his friend and college teammate, the Taiwanese born C. K. Yang.

He later went on to do some acting (although had to turn down a role in 'Spartacus' lest he lose his 'amateur' status), was a member of the organizing committee for the Special Olympics, and, oh

yeah, was one of a trio (w/NFL'er Rosey Grier and writer George Plimpton) who tackled and helped to wrestle the gun out of Sirhan Sirhan's hand during the Robert Kennedy assassination (Johnson

worked on RFK's campaign).

Charley Pride, pioneering country music superstar and would-be 1963 Met, 86, from COVID-19 complications.

As wretched as the Mets were, they weren't so desperate as to be scouting smelters' club teams. Pride sent the clippings about his past baseball success to the general manager, George Weiss, and received no response. But he came up with a gambit: What if he mailed six Louisville Slugger Brooks Robinson–model bats with his name on them to the Mets' camp in [St. Petersburg]? Then the team would be expecting him when he arrived.

He bought a one-way ticket from Great Falls, Mont., to Tampa, with connections in Chicago and Atlanta. It was 4 a.m. by the time he made it to the Mets' hotel. He talked the night manager into showing him the guest register, where he found the name of an old Negro leagues buddy, second baseman Sammy Drake. Pride knocked on Drake's door, and the stunned, half-dressed infielder took him in.

Pride's big-league dream ended the next day. In fact, he got no further than the team bus. Casey Stengel told Weiss, “We ain't running no damn tryout camp down here. . . . Take him downtown and put him on a bus anywhere he wants to go.” Pride asked for a ticket back home to Montana—with a pit stop in Nashville.

I never read any Le Carre, even going back to the time when I would occasionally delve into a Ludlum or Forsythe spy/international intrigue novel.

Maybe I'll pick up 'Spy Who Came in From the Cold' one of these days. I saw the movie that came out a few years back but that won't be a spoiler

since I couldn't make heads or tails out of what was happening and by the end had no idea who did what or why.

I read one or two Le Carre books. He certainly didn't make international espionage seem exciting. Soul crushing, as much as anything.

In his later years, he was a frequent observer on the Trump phenomenon, writing essays with titles like "America Is Losing Their Damned Minds," which were keenly accurate, but sadly, was slow to realize that the UK was doing it too.

One of mine as well. I was captivated by Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and then by the very good miniseries made from it in the 1970's with Alec Guinness as George Smiley. The remake with Gary Oldman was a weak copy, unfortunately, despite a stellar cast.

I wrote above that a movie adaptation of 'Spy Who Came in From the Cold' was one I couldn't follow, but it was this one -- T, T, S, S w/Oldman -- that I meant.

See, it confused me so much that I couldn't even remember the name correctly.

https://variety.com/2020/music/news/leslie-west-mountain-singer-guitarist-woodstock-dead-1234873181/

Just finished reading that Variety piece you linked to. West said he played with just two fingers. I did not know that. I'm gonna check out some youtube stuff to see if that's totally true or just an exaggeration because I'm having trouble believing it.

On the other hand, I've been listening to Django Reinhardt for most of my adult life and I just learned last week, that Django was also a two-fingered guitarist, having lost the use of his pinky and ring finger in a fire as a teen-ager.

I can vouch for the classic Howard Stern guest line. Because my favorite Leslie West memory is him on the Stern show about 25 or 30 years ago, just noodling and improvising and playing snippets of classic rock songs including a funky version of Honky Tonk Woman that I still remember to this day.
