Re: 2020 oscar nominations

yes. there is an excellent youtube video from my guys at Fandom Entertainment/SJU about the release patterns of oscar nominees over the years, and it shows that, with the increased volume of films now eligible because of the streaming companies and the perception that a late release is for "prestige" pictures, that 75% of nominees now come from the last 1/4 of the year.

It bears noting that I liked almost all of these, to some extent. Like, FROZEN II ended up being my least favorite because I just happened to rate all of the new releases I saw a bit better; it never gave me the worst-movie-ever feeling. I think I'm being a lot more careful with curating my movie time (and/or giving all of my crapwatching mental energy to episodic TV/streaming fare).

When They See Us - ****

Re: 2020 oscar nominations

WHEN THEY SEE US was faaaaaantastic, and should be watched by more people than it will be; I think it's considered more of a miniseries than a movie. (Though the lines do keep blurring for streaming fare.)

RE: stuff I've seen in the last week. I was surprised by how little I liked THE IRISHMAN-- although I get what he was going for, it wasn't necessarily an improvement over earlier considerations of the same thematic/plot ground-- and by how much I liked ROCKETMAN-- weird and wooly and entertaining-- and THE TWO POPES (though it got a little Odd-Couple-y in spots).

1917 was brilliantly directed and photographed.

If the cinematographer doesn't win the Oscar, they shouldn't award one.

Re: 2020 oscar nominations

1917 was brilliantly photographed and the cinematographer does deserve an Oscar. The one-shot trick has been done before in Hitchcock's Rope although 1917 is a better film, at least the one-shot gimmick was much better handled. But ultimately the "this happened and then this happened and then this happened" aspect wore on me as I didn't much care about the main character. I hadn't seen it when I made my list but I would rank it about the 8th best movie of 2019.

ok, so it's the order that i wrote them down. and i might be missing one. they're probably also in order of how much i liked them. bolded movies were seen in an actual theater. i know the last one is in last place for a good reason.

we never talked about that movie on here. odd. but it irks me so. i mean, it was a stupid, i-guess-fun ride, with cool visuals. but man, it was stupid and dumb and made even less sense after i thought about it, and then i was mad at myself for thinking about it. ugh. i'm still annoyed by it.

My top-ten involves nine:

JOJO RABBIT

ONCE UPON A TIME … IN HOLLYWOOD

1917

ROCKETMAN

AD ASTRA

YESTERDAY

FORD VS FERRARI

--------------

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

COLD PURSUIT

I even saw the majority of them in an actual theatre (Astra, Blinded, and Cold Pursuit were via DVD) and would recommend all but the final two.

COLD PURSUIT, which I watched last week on a whim on a night when I really, really felt like doing nothing at all, is a really, really bad movie.

Has Liam Neeson made a non-revenge flick in, like, the last ten years?

My revised list, adding a couple I've seen in recent weeks:

PARASITE

ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD

PAIN AND GLORY

THE IRISHMAN

JOJO RABBIT

LITTLE WOMEN

MARRIAGE STORY

BOOKSMART

1917

KNIVES OUT

US

THE FAREWELL

THE TWO POPES

AMERICAN FACTORY

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

YESTERDAY

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME

THE LIGHTHOUSE

LATE NIGHT

Seen in theaters except the five that were Netflix originals (IRISHMAN, DOLEMITE, MARRIAGE STORY, TWO POPES, AMERICAN FACTORY) plus YESTERDAY and BOOKSMART which were also TV-views. Total of 19 - one shy of a Top Ten and Bottom Ten which makes KNIVES OUT the most middling movie I saw this year, which feels right.

In terms of carrying the weight, Phoenix was like LeBron on the Cavaliers team that forced him to initially leave the Cavaliers. In terms of everything else... well, the production design was really good, for aping Martin Scorcese slavishly, and... well. It ain't my favorite.

Re: 2020 oscar nominations

I'd say it's artistic-cum-commercial protectionism, only the Academy has always been pretty cool with BRITISH (and other English-speaking) foreigners grabbing some of that shine.

Xenophobia is closer to the thing, probs, with a healthy dash of favoritism. That may seem unduly harsh, unless you've ever seen some of the Hollywood Reporter's Brutally Honest Oscar ballots:

Parasite is beautifully done, but it didn't hold up the second time, and I don't think foreign films should be nominated with the regular films...

I liked 1917 and Sam Mendes' direction, but I thought Quentin did a great job, and I want an American director to win. The Oscars is an American thing; English things win BAFTAs and the French vote for the French, and Quentin Tarantino should be honored for a great American movie...

I didn't like American Factory — when the Chinese boss says "We're better than them" and they show the American workers as big fat slobs, I thought to myself, "Why is Obama attaching himself to this?" [Higher Ground, the production company run by Barack and Michelle Obama, is behind the film.] The Cave and For Sama were basically the same movie with different characters.

New trend?

Well, just because yours in one of the five best foreign films of the year doesn't mean it automatically is also one of the five best (it was five only until very recently) overall.

As far as new trends, there was the change, noted by PARASITE's director during one of his 14 or 15 speeches last night, that this is the first year they altered the definition from

'Foreign Language Film' to 'International Entry' (or however they phrased it). Now maybe that's nothing more than a distinction without a difference or perhaps it gave PARASITE

a leg up as a noted movie which just happen to come from overseas rather than the rather the 'foreign language' designation which sounds like it needs to stay in its own category.

Re: 2020 oscar nominations

Before this year, there were 11 foreign language films nominated for best picture, with 6 of them also nominated for best foreign-language film (and 5 of those winning in the best foreign film category, which began in 1956).
