MetPolice caught a happy 70th birthday tweet and Instagram post of the HOF entrance by Matlack's son as evidence of a forthcoming induction announcement.

saw him as a rookie, at the game where he took a line drive off his noggin. The impact sounded like a gunshot and he dropped like a box of rocks, so everybody started looking around for a shooter.

next year, he was a guest at our little league awards breakfast and i got an autograph. He was very tall (at least to 11-year old me) and looked like Herman Munster, which i thought was very cool.

congrats, Jonny!

Re: Jon Matlack is the next Met HOFer!?

It's a little odd to me they are going back to that era to honor Matlack (for the Hall) and Koosman (for the number) rather than looking at the 1999-2000 and 2007-2008 teams. Not saying those honors aren't well-deserved, and it's always good to correct oversights.

But would love to see Bobby V, Wright and Alfonzo get their due for the Mets Hall, followed by Reyes, Beltran -- gonna have to wait a little on those, though.

Re: Jon Matlack is the next Met HOFer!?

Why's that odd? Bobby V's guy's shouldn't have to wait more than 20 years but Yogi's guys have to wait an eternity? Maybe they should wait until Matlack and every single Met fan who ever saw him pitch for the Mets in real time are all dead before they put Matlack in their HOF. What's odd is that Koosman's number wasn't retired decades ago while #8 is in goddamn mothballs.

Other people Jon Matlack looked like:

David Hartman. There's a Good Morning America episode where David Hartman interviewed Seaver, Koosman, and Matlack. Which I guess proves they're not actually the same person.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn. There's a Good Morning America episode where David Hartman interviewed Solzhenitsyn's wife Natalya. They talked about the Mets.

Bob Huff, a mathematician friend of my father's who also looked like Solzhenitsyn. He was never on Good Morning America.

Re: Jon Matlack is the next Met HOFer!?

Some other interesting things about Matlack:

Middle name is Trumpbour. I'm assuming its a family name. Maybe Mom's maiden name?

He had 13 wins in 1974 -- with seven of them shutouts! That's deGrom-like run support.

Held the Reds to two hits in the 1973 playoffs Game 2 -- both of them by Andy Kosco.

Finished his career one loss under .500, at 125-126.

Can't think of anyone else from that era who they would put in the team Hall who isn't already in.

Here's some cool stuff about Matlack that you may not know yet (preview of huge MBTN scoop):

Matlack was called up to the Mets in September of 1970 but never appeared in a game. But what number did he wear?

According to a September 3 Daily Snooze article, he was assigned #27

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49434910642_1163e6d7be.jpg>

But then there's this scorecard, from September 4 in Chicago, indicates he was wearing #50

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49434910392_eaf1ee5413.jpg>

Back in Queens Sept. 10, the scorecard lists him in #35:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49434910877_a664dd4bb1.jpg>

I had the last reference for some time and that's the "official" unofficial record. Matlack didn't actually debut till July 1971; Charlie Williams had 35 then, so he was issued his familiar 32.

Pretty good notes column with a visit from Cool Papa Bell. The pitcher Scheffing was waiting to clear waivers was Dean Chance who'd join the club a week or two later and appear in just couple games ... wearing #27

You know who always seems to be outside the conversation? Howard Johnson.

I'm not sure where the line should be, but he was, by most fair measures, a top-ten Mets batter all-time, almost certainly ahead of Hall-of-Famers such as Mookie Wilson and Rusty Staub. Kraney Krane too. (Although, most "fair" measures aren't particularly fair when it comes to pinch-hitters.)

The media guide dates may not be firm, based on DiComo's current reporting, understandable in the scheme of pandemic things.

The Mets also plan to retire Koosman's No. 36, which they had intended to do last summer before COVID-19 interfered. That ceremony is now tentatively scheduled for September.

In the second half of the season, the Mets will also induct three new members into their team Hall of Fame: Jon Matlack, Ron Darling and Edgardo Alfonzo.

Re: Alfonzo, Darling and Matlack to join the Met HOF, Al Jackson given Achievement Award

fWAR of all Mets players currently in the Holla Fame, who haven't had their numbers retired by the team.

Gary Carter 12.8

Tom Glavine 12.0

Pedro Martinez 9.8

Willie Mays 2.1

Nolan Ryan 3.9

Eddie Murray 3.9

Richie Ashburn 2.0

Joe Torre 2.0

Rickey Henderson 1.6

Roberto Alomar 1.5

Duke Snider 0.7

Warren Spahn 0.1

Yogi Berra -0.1

My feeling remains that the best way to confront any controversy over who should or should not have their number retired is to realize that their are countless other ways to honor a player.

Also, these ceremonies work out a lot better if you make a point to schedule some doubleheaders. When Jerry Koosman was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame, the crowd in the stands was embarrassingly sparse.

That's Mets fWAR only, by the way. And 12.8 is supposed to impress me? That's two all-star seasons. That's not number retiring territory. Which is what what Gary Carter the Met was. Two really good seasons and then doneski. Like put a fork in him done.

Hall of Fame? So Carter deserves to have his Met # retired over Keith because people think that Gary had a better career with the Expos than Keith had with the Cards? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Re: Alfonzo, Darling and Matlack to join the Met HOF, Al Jackson given Achievement Award

I've always thought Carter's value to the Mets was greater than his stats. Just like Casey Stengel, who presumably had his number retired for reasons other than his won-loss percentage. I'd like to see Carter's number retired. I also think it's a little late. Honoring the 1986 team has always been a little complicated.

Here's a nice story about Carter: [url]https://metsmerizedonline.com/2021/04/gary-carter-sometimes-there-is-crying-in-baseball.html/
