Okay Smarty the Mets Didn't Get Marte

There has been a lot of talk in the last few days about the Mets trading for Starling Marte. He's on the wrong side (for a ballplayer) of 30 (he's 31), has a drug suspension, his fielding has diminished BUT he gives you power, speed and has won 2 Gold Gloves. He has a plus 3 WAR and really wants to be a Met.

They aren't going to do this on the day they introduce the latest Manager but what do you think? Should the Mets "bust a move" and trade for Marte?

Re: Okay Smarty the Mets Might Get Marte

I know, I should be paying more attention, but I suddenly have a much more active personal life!

Who is currently projected to be in the Mets outfield? Nimmo and Conforto. And maybe Cespedes. Who's the left fielder if it's not Cespedes? Davis? Or McNeil?I'm thinking it's Davis in left and McNeil at third base?

I read somewhere that the Pirates are not necessarily looking for big league talent in return for Marte. (Don't know if that's true. I'm skeptical.) And I've also read that the Rockies are interested in Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez. Is it at all possible that the Mets can swing two big deals? If Nimmo doesn't go to Pittsburgh, and is displaced by Marte, could he be part of a package with Alvarez that goes for Nolan Arenado?

Crazy, right?

Re: Okay Smarty the Mets Might Get Marte

I like Marte, after perusing his stats, but if last years defensive blip is real and not some aberration, whether just in the defensive statistics or like, nagging injury that healed now or something, it's less interesting.

It continues to be a weird fit though, because the Mets DO have outfielders. It's easy to say "don't count on Cespedes" but like, he's actively being very active. But even if you did, he's the 4th or 5th best hitting OFer depending on how you count Davis and McNeil, and if you don't they have nowhere to play, unless you think Lowrie's activation last year wasn't real and he's got some secret chronic career-ending injury and won't be able to play at all. And even so, Davis and McNeil make the 4th and 5th Infielders too!

The mets could use better defensive players, but like, I don't know that acquiring Marte and having to either sell low on Cespedes and Lowrie is that helpful? Even if Marte is good defensively, I don't think that bump makes the Mets better than they are with Davis-Nimmo-Conforto?

I guess you could figure it out all in Mid March, it just feels like a weird fit now.

I love Nimmo, but if we could get Arenado and get him to cancel/delay the opt out, I'd make that deal in a heartbeat. Would have to find a place for NcNeil.

Re: Okay Smarty the Mets Might Get Marte

I'd bet McNeil goes in any Arenado deal.

I worry that the Mets have a hard time seeing what they've got in Zimmo; that said upgrading the D in CF is something they really oughta do and something has to give.

Also, Marte + Arenado > Team as Is > just Marte

Also, I'd like to trade Cespedes

I just don't see them pulling the trigger for Arenado.

Outfield right now is Davis/Zimmo/Conforto, with possible cameo appearances by Folly Rancher in left. Marte has nowhere to go but down, and the Mets shouldn't make a trade like that two years in a row.

Hard pass on Marte, and you sure as fuck don't trade Nimmo for him.

Re: Okay Smarty the Mets Might Get Marte

Sometimes I feel like I'm in a twilight zone when I read about the possible trades the Mets are considering.

If Starling Marte were to join the Mets, he would join Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo, JD Davis and Yoenis Cespedes as possible starting outfielders. Marte, at .793, has the lowest career OPS of this entire group. Even if you don't give up anyone here, he makes you worse offensively by taking ABs away from a better hitter. If you exclude Cespedes, he's also the oldest and most expensive. And he's the only one coming off a PED suspension.

Sure, his CF defense is better than any of these guys, but as has been posted many times, it's declining. Either precipitously, or moderately, depending on which metric you look at, but certainly dropping. So is the CF defense over Nimmo worth what you will give up offensively, plus the additional salary, plus what you will give up for him in a trade? I've heard that catching prospect Francisco Alvarez might be involved, or Thomas Szapucki. That sounds insane to me.

And to give up Nimmo for him? Nimmo is already a better hitter, even when you consider he played half of 2019 without being able to turn his neck. Use only his healthy numbers and the comparison isn't even close. Factor in the age, salary, years of control...this is just stupid.

CF is, as almost always, correct.

stop this nonsense.

Re: Okay Smarty the Mets Might Get Marte

Now let's do Arenado.

First of all, if the Mets could afford $35 million a year for a third baseman, they would have been in on Rendon. They weren't, and they cannot. And nothing could be dumber than passing on Rendon because you don't want to pay money, then trading for Arenado, taking on his salary, his optout, and giving up young talent.

And if the Rockies ask for McNeil, you hang up and never speak to them again.

Nolan Arenado will be 29 in April. His career OPS is .897. He plays half his games in Coors. Arenado gives you out of the world defense at 3B. WAR of 5.7 in 2019.

Jeff McNeil will be 28 in April. His career OPS is .896. He plays his home games at Citi. McNeil doesn't play nearly as well on D, but can play 4 different positions well. WAR of 5.0.

McNeil makes nothing and is under control for 5 more years. Arenado makes $35 million, has a contract paying him that until he's 35, and has an optout after 2021.

It would be insane to pass on Rendon, then trade McNeil for Arenado.

I mean, there's a surer percentage that Arenado is awesome in 2020-2021 than McNeil is, just body of work and longevity, but probably not a big enough bet to make this move, even if you think defense is extra important (and if you do, you've still got Alonso at first so..)

I don't think the Mets are really in on Arenado though, I think it's more like Brodie wants to check in on every good player to gauge value and not miss deals and whatever. Like if Colorado is desperate enough to pay half the salary and somehow values only the prospects you have that you think suck, well, sure..

If Smitty is still around (I haven't missed anything, have I?), then I think Smith and Davis are the two-headed leftfielder until Céspedestrian proves otherwise.

Ayep. He's past his prime. Don't trade young talented guys for old veterans. This message has been brought to you by the word DUH.

I was wondering how far I'd have to scroll down before somebody remembered we still have Dom Smith.

As for Marte? It's not clear at all he's still a better fielder than Nimmo, and a healthy Nimmo is a better hitter. Now he'd be an upgrade defensively compared to Smith/Davis, but not offensively. (And there is a reasonable chance that Smith and/or Davis will improve defensively with more experience. Smith was less awful in left last year compared to 2018, despite mostly playing first in spring and in AAA.) Maybe Marte's glove would be worth a few runs. But at what expense? Ignoring the cost in players, we'd probably be taking on the full $11M he's owed. In a vacuum that's not a bad price. But for that money, would you rather have Marte instead of Smith/Davis, or Ryu or Bumgarner or Wheeler instead of Porcello/Wacha?

Plus, even if the glove is still a weapon, they've already brought in a glove-first outfield guy.

Liover Peguero (SS Prospect) and another prospect are the players going the other way. Young, high ceiling guy but years away.

And the ask was Nimmo plus? LMAO.

Brennan Malone has got to either be the act I saw open for The Dropkick Murphys back in 2002 or the former head basketball coach at Canisius and Iona.
