He's no Tom Veryzer, but I'll roll out the orange carpet for him.

Had a pretty lousy 2019 (I'd like to amend that statement after having checked — he had a very lousy 2019), but maybe if the range is still there, he's worth a look. Go, Noonie!

Re: Nuñez: He’s What’s New

He had range?

He's more like SuperSuperJoe, insofar as he plays a lot of positions (like, everything but catcher and pitcher). Which is to say, he owns a lot of gloves, not that he wields them with any particular skill. IIRC, he also runs. Or ran. Does he still run?

I dunno. As I recall it he was always making a bad error or screwing up a key play for the MFYs. I think of him and hear John + Suzyn in my head making excuses for "Nuney" -- as they always came from this perspective that they were his parents; concerned with a sruggling kid who hasn't realized how special he is.

A 2 WAR in 2017. 40 SBs in 2016. A ring with Boston in 2018. 2B-3B. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/eduardo-nunez/6848/stats?position=3B/SS

Re: Nuñez: He’s What’s New

He's one of those guys who's a real good athlete but, no way to sugarcoat it, is a BAD fielder; just seems to have bad hands no matter where you put him. Also, his lack of walks usually kept

his OPS+ under 100 even as he hit near, or sometimes over, .300. But he does have some value so I'm not going to squawk over a minor league deal.

He was one of those guys who, seemingly out of nowhere, has a good season for the MFY -- he filled in at SS during Jeter's injury year -- but also one where the team realizes that it's likely

not a sustainable pace [see: Ricky Ledee, Shane Spencer, etc.] so they deal him off hoping to 'sell high' or just let him walk when a better option (in this case, Didi) comes around.

Re: Nuñez: He’s What’s New

So last year they kept Adeiny Hechavarria, Ruben Tejada, Danny Espinosa, and Dilson Herrera stockpiled in the minors and he might be as good as any of them?

Well, crap.

Re: Nuñez: He’s What’s New

I don't think you heard me, bud. Those guys play 1-3 positions poorly; HE plays SEVERAL positions poorly.

Re: Nuñez: He’s What’s New

I found them to be good-to-excellent fielders, even at this portion of their careers. Ruben Tejootie is probably average at best with his range impeded post-leg break, but I thought it was a pretty good pile of gloves, and the first half of the season, I'd've trusted any of them over Rosario.

Fair point.

Revised: Those guys play 1-3 positions while giving you poor overall production; HE plays SEVERAL positions while giving you poor overall production.

Probably tears it up at AAA and gets a cuppa.
