Like the industry doesn't know what a laughing stock the Mets are.

Re: Wheeler: Because it's the Mets and that's how they roll

This is a pretty funny paragraph, though.

“Obviously everything starts at the top and it filters down,” Wheeler said. “Whether it be somebody's fault or not, it starts at the top and goes down. Maybe the top gives them the OK but lower down they don't want to do something. Or maybe up top, they don't give you the opportunity to do something but everybody else wants to do it. That's kind of how it was there at certain points. Everything was kind of jumpy because certain people would want something, others wouldn't. I don't think everyone was on the same page.”

A bit confusing. I mean, hitting the point hard first, then nibbling around the edges until the thing is lost is more of an Old Wheeler thing, right?

This seemed pretty apt, though.

And one that certainly reappears from time to time. Let's hope that's the one the Phils got.

This is just that smalltalk stuff I try to avoid. Whatever, new Philly knocks Mets in a mostly vague way. Whatever.

And like, of course Mets fans are going to 'how dare you' that's what we do! It's a sport! They'/He's the enemy! This isn't about "logical debate about who's actually right and what the truth is."

I still remember Wheeler was one of those that was whiny about the shift. Maybe he was convinced/came around but the "Certain people would want something" comment made me think of that.

Wheeler is right. The Wilpons suck.

Rey was right. The fans are stupid.

But not about Rey. Rey did actually suck.

BVW needs to shut up. Also, why didn't they make him an offer before he became a FA?

If you don't think Wheeler's agent knew exactly what the Mets were or weren't going to offer him, you're deluded.

Breaking: New player on rival bashes old team. I bet the Phillies fans like the comments, and that's who this was for.

I get that position players haven't reported officially yet, but the #MetsBeat has given us roughly zero real info about Cespedes or Lowrie or their plans, but will happily file a dozen posts about Phillies or the 2017 Astros.

Tbis is bullshit disingenuous spin MetsSpeak for we couldn't afford Wheeler even though we play in the largest market on the planet so we'll continue to play our Michael Cuddyer games and hope that Wacha and Porcello replace Wheeler's numbers. Because when you play in baseball's toughest division where you could be a good team and still finish in fourth place, the thing to do is to let Wheeler walk and then sign Michael Wacha and then pray for David Wright to return and hit 45 HR's.

Aren't you glad we still own the Mets? I'm working on a deal that'll have my son Jeff run the team for 20 years after both me and Jeff are dead. Details to follow.

Now it's Wheeler's fault for two first place finishes in 31 seasons.

It's a bad look for BVW. I also sort of disagree with him.

"2 good half-seasons". Yeesh. I'm sure that Wheeler will remember that when he pitches against the Mets.

FanGraphs doesn't have a bulletin-board-material stat yet? I'm shocked!

Sure they do. Right here contains all the value players gain from 'bulletin board material'

Re: Wheeler: Because it's the Mets and that's how they roll

My favorite "New player vaguely bashes old team" headline was when Paul Lo Duca became a National. He was coming off a rotten season in a walk year in a bad part of his career to have a rotten season. He was happy to get a big league contract offer, and he tried to say so. The Nats beat reporter was all, "But won't you have extra motivation having 18 chances to show the Mets they were wrong to let you go?"

Now, no way was Lo Duca going to get 18 games against anybody, but he suddenly realized he wasn't getting out of there without something like the quote they were fishing for, so he laid out something more anodyne than hostile like, "Sure, everybody likes to beat their old team — you always want to try and prove they made a mistake," but even though all the subtext was "But really, I'm just lucky to have a job and hoping to stay healthy," they went with the "Paulie wants to punish the Mets" lede.

And of course, he had a lousy year, and it was his last. He played 46 games for the Nats, none against the Mets.

Re: Wheeler: Because it's the Mets and that's how they roll

Van Wagenen's assessment isn't off base. Though I'm wary of magically subtracting the determinative portions of a season or career to bend reality where want it to point, without the second halves of 2018 and 2019, Wheeler is marginally more appealing on the open market than Dillon Gee a few years before. Zack backsliding in the first half of '19 before recovering, in light of the erratic track record that preceded his initial breakout, represented a legitimately pauseworthy event when it came time to make a nine-figure commitment.

But saying it out loud was bush. Be the classier one. “We wish him well and we're looking ahead” will do just fine.

Whatever. Phillies are better, Mets worse, now that they have Wheeler and we don't. Being an asshole on top of that, it's just so ugly.
