Suck be relative I'd take almost any of these songs over almost any #1 from 2019.

Let's put this to the test! Ten number one songs from 1978 versus ten number one songs from 2019, seeded by their position on the Billboard Hot 100 year end singles chart. You must chose one song from each matchup for your mixtape/playlist.

1. "Shadow Dancing" by Andy Gibb vs. "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

2. "Night Fever" by Bee Gees vs. "Sunflower" by Post Malone and Swae Lee

3. "Stayin' Alive" by Bee Gees vs. "Without Me" by Halsey

4. "Kiss You All Over" by Exile vs. "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish

5. "How Deep is Your Love" by Bee Gees vs. "7 Rings" by Ariana Grande

6. "Baby Come Back" by Player vs. "Sucker" by Jonas Brothers

7. "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" by Andy Gibb vs. "Thank U, Next" by Ariana Grande

8. "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by Taste of Honey vs. "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo

9. "Three Times A Lady" by Commodores vs. "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

10. "Grease" by Frankie Valli vs. "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper

My mixtape:

1. "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

2. "Night Fever" by Bee Gees

3. "Stayin' Alive" by Bee Gees

4. "Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish

5. "How Deep is Your Love" by Bee Gees

6. "Baby Come Back" by Player

7. "Thank U, Next" by Ariana Grande

8. "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo

9. "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

10. "Grease" by Frankie Valli

So it looks like 1978 and 2019 have finished with a 5-5 draw.

Re: The "My goodness, did 1978 suck" quiz

At least back in 1978 it didn't usually take two (or more) artists to complete one record.

When I've seen end-of-year lists of top songs in recent years it seems that at least half (and often a lot more than half) are someone with or featuring someone else.

Four from this past year's top ten list multiple artists although at least the Cooper/Gaga one is intended as a duet from a movie script rather than an attempt at crossover appeal and/or brand enhancement.

I don't actually know any of the 2019 songs so I can't really give an opinion here, but if they're losing in head-to-head match-ups to the likes of 'Baby Come Back' and 'Grease' I'm not sure I want to.

In fairness, high-quality videos are a lot easier to make these days. The Nas video has five minutes of coherent plot before the music even starts.

You know if we retroactively added "feat. Barry Gibb" to all the songs he worked on for other artists in 1978, this distinction would no longer hold water.
