I don't even want to start this thread but it's my grim duty. And it's yours.

Re: 2020 Vision: Edwin Diaz

My guys in Howard Beach tell me that Edwin Diaz will be sleeping with the fishes if he doesn't perform well this year.

My guess is that he will stay dry.

64G 71 IP 1.19WHIP 27 for 33 in save attempts. (He won't be in save situations at the start of the year.)

By the end of the year he'll be more despised than Mel Rojas.

That's closer to where I am. In fact I never really hated Mel Rojas all that much, I was just disappointed in his performance. This is different inasmuch as it proves how little the Mets learn from the Rojases of the world.

It'll be just ugly, but he'll lose his "closer" role sooner than Jarred Kelenic arrives in the big leagues, and will get a mercy change-of-scenery trade to, say, the Tigers, Royals or White Sox. That's my upside scenario.

… where he goes on to be the Royals closer for the next decade, with 8 all-star appearances, eventually getting a statue in KC next to George Brett and gets serious HOF consideration after his retirement.

HUGE error bars on this one. I'll say a bit less Mr. Hyde than last year, with enough awesome outings to make his overall 3.80 ERA seem better than it is.

Fixes what's wrong, keeps what's right. Stellar year, 45 saves.

Yeah the range of possible outcomes for him is greater than any other Met on the roster, dare I say.

Do we have the old ball or new ball? Or a different ball altogether? Are we allowed to get this info before making a prediction?

He gets traded for Arenado

50% better than last year. That's still disappointing but the bar is set so low

at this point.

I'd like to know too. players seem to feel like it's less juiced, but it's not necessarily correlated to regular season anyway. Plus it's possible this is completely out of control. Each batch of balls is far from uniform.

Diaz had all the peripherals. his pitches were mostly good, his movement, etc. To my less than expert analysis of the graphs and everything, it seems that his problem is he was having trouble keeping the slider DOWN. But given that he has something to work on, the velocity/movement is still there, he's working with talented people like Pedro Martinez, I think he'll mostly bounce back.

42 K%. 6.8 BB%. 0.88 WHIP.

2.6 ERA. 68 game pitched across 71 IP. 48 saves. 11 HR. 2 balks.

Without the data, I thought his slider was awesome, but his fastball was getting pummeled.

But yeah, something was getting left up.

It's all interrelated. You don't get the slider down and they don't swing over it, you come back with a fastball and they're waiting for it. Especially if you're not lowering their eye level with the slider and all that stuff.

Could've been some placement issues with the fastball too

When did Diaz switch uniform numbers to 21? And what's Frazier's new number gonna be?

A defensible guess that I'm happy to say was overly cynical, although his role in blowing that game against the Yankees might be the defining moment of the season.
