Tough to find a picture of the back of Johnny Lazor's uni, but he wore #82.

Great baseball name, too.

Or maybe -43. I'm not sure.

Or how about 0.05?

OK. I'll award you a chicken dinner for your cleverness, but I can't declare you the quiz winner.

Let's do this again.

What's the lowest positive whole number that's never been worn as a uniform number in MLB?

Cliff Johnson wore 00 and Al Oliver wore 0.

I'll leave it to the mathematicians here to discuss which is lower.

I can't find a picture of a major leaguer wearing 86 'cause there ain't one. And every positive whole number lower than 86 was worn.

That makes you the winner.

Wasn't the original question "the lowest"?

That would be the highest.

I thought you might be thinking that Eddie Gadel's 1/8 was the lowest, and maybe, when he went into his crouch, it was technically the lowest.

I'd try and explain where you're confused here but I can't explain it any better than with the very words that you just quoted. Just stare at those rules and concentrate. You highlighted "lowest" when you should've highlighted "never".

I'm still confused. The lowest number according to multiple sources is 80.

Unfortunately, the newest links saying 80 is the number are from 08/2018.

Baseball Almanac has a listing by team of all numbers ever worn, but that's

a lot of clicking and checking.

Lots of ambiguity for a data site though. When 2 numbers in one season are listed it doesn't specify the dates worn, so it can't be cross-referenced with stats by number. Its source data had the same issue, and definitely not 100% convinced of its accuracy. It's relatively easy to find omissions and errors in that data you wouldn;t necessarily see in say, RBIs or batting averages

The 86 Bat boys. Always thought it was weird they were so front and center in the celebration. Hard not to get caught in the moment I guess.

Re: Quiz

I felt like the first names on the backs of the jerseys humanized the 86 batboys and made them a part of the club. Nobody knows the first name of the batboys anymore.

Mets used to issue numberless jerseys to the batboys. I always felt it was better than some clubs who'd dress them in "BB". I think that Yankees did that for a while.

I'm not even sure what the Met bbs wear anymore

Edgy MD

Re: Quiz

I think they've been wearing BB in recent seasons. Wearing the last two digits of the season has been problematic since 2010, so they went to blanks, I think, followed by BBs.

It was easier to spot when the Mets had batboys as big as Lucas Duda.

Strawberry was talking about the 1986 team on the Baseball Tonight podcast. Olney was declaring the 1998 MFYs as the greatest team in the history of baseball -- that's not hyperbole -- and Straw said the 1986 Mets were better. He said the competition was tougher in 1986, with even Olney fessing that the Yankees beat up on the expansion Devil Rays. Straw had interesting things to say about Gary Carter, calling him one of his mentors. He said he admired Carter's abilities and his happiness.

It's a good episode, aside from Olney's MFY fanboyness and his not mentioning the batboys.
