The Banner

Every year, on Opening Day, I hang out my banner from Shea Stadium out a window on my house, touting the anachronistic slogan: THE TEAM. THE TIME. THE PLACE. Big block letters.

It gets comments from passing neighbors, and then the moment passes. My policy has been to leave it up until the Mets first loss. With the team's tradition of winning on Opening Day, combined with frequent days off early in the season and overall hot starts out of the gate in recent years, I've had some extended displays. Sometimes even the better part of the week.

Traditions being what they are, I flew it again on Opening Day this year, though nothing actually opened. I got a few comments from passing neighbors, keeping social distance, and when they asked, I joked that I'd leave it up until the first loss, both of us realizing that while the Mets have a zero in the LOSS column, the whole schedule may indeed be already lost here in Schrödinger's Baseball Season.

So what's the move? Do I leave it up, as a reminder of what should be? Or do I take it down, respectfully letting go of what can never be? I'd hate for a look at my house to just be a turn of the knife for quarantine-breaking neighbors.

I'd fly it but at half-mast

Re: The Banner

Keep it up, as a symbol of hope that the season will one day begin.

If I had a mast, that would be the play.

I'd suggest that you get yourself a mast, but all of the mast stores are probably closed.

Masts are on backorder at Amazon.

I like the idea of keeping it up as a symbol of hope, or at least give neighbors escaping isolation for a walk the opportunity to say "huh?"
