What's Your Thing?

How are you replacing baseball in your life? Learning a new language? Catching up on your reading? Starting an affair?

Crisis means "danger + opportunity," or something, right?

Re: What's Your Thing?

I had to cancel a baseball-centric trip during mid-April but I also have a dear friend about to undergo knee surgery who needs my assistance so that will be a big and essential time filler. It's not like sports rule my life. I'm just doing what I always do - take care of people who matter to me. Baseball always comes after that.

Not meaning to sound all pious or whatnot but when we're in these unusual times, flexibility is essential.

OK, I will admit I did one thing that was spurred by this present crisis. It's been on the back burner for a few years now but at my age, it was time to get my will drawn up. I saw my attorney a few days ago and have gotten the thing sketched out. In a couple of weeks I'll review and sign it with witnesses. The important thing was property and my accounts that needed beneficiaries designated and the percentages broken down. Now I have to live long enough for those investment accounts to recover from being heavily grenaded. That's my reason to live, not baseball returning. I have people depending on their inheritances.

truthfully, baseball has been much a multi-task activity lately with the kids and bedtimes and all that jazz. I'll probably just single-task things instead?

I'm not starting an affair... Unfortunately I'm putting one on hold. My girlfriend of seven months has a compromised immune system, and so does her young daughter. So she's self quarantining for the time being, which may last for quite a while. So we've decided to conduct a long-distance relationship, even though she lives less than two miles away.

Re: What's Your Thing?

Because the season hasn't actually started yet it's not like I have to suddenly find a replacement routine, I merely have to wait longer than I expected for baseball season.

This would have been a lot tougher had they kicked things off and then had to shut down. And the toughest part might be not knowing how long we're going to be waiting.

So it's just continuing the winter routine but hoping that better weather allows me to get out on the bike more often.

btw, I flicked on the TV late yesterday afternoon to see what the networks are showing instead of the sports they were scheduled to run

- CBS, which was scheduled to have the BIG TEN hoops championship was showing last year's BIG TEN tourney

- NBC, slated to be in the midst of THE PLAYER'S championship (golf's so-called 'fifth major') was also showing the 2019 version

I don't think I want to know how many people were watching those offerings. And I never got as far as checking out what the cable channels were stooping to.

One change is that I was planning on getting rid of my current beard sometime around the end of March. But now, as a matter of protest against the loss of baseball, I think I need to keep it specifically

until
whatever day OD shows up. Now I just hope that date doesn't come too far into the summer as some odd looking tan lines emerge if you shave off a beard after you've begun to get some sun.

SNY has gotten rid of SportsNite (because there's nothing to cover) and their annoying chat shows (because there's nothing to talk about) and is just running 2019 Met games and late-nite infomercials.

Haven't figured out yet if they're only running the wins or if they're replaying the whole season. Watched a game against the Marlins last night that they just barely hung on to win. Hey, it's better than doom and gloom.

What they should really do is replay old games in front of talking heads (more like talking silhouettes) and have them mock the players and make jokes the entire time MST3K-style.

Now THAT would be something I'd watch. Hell, that would be something I'd want to be on the panel for.

Kids can kind of stay engaged futzing around in the mud during yardwork, or aping your raking with their own tools. Just watch that you don't swing a tool and hit them. Or run them down with an edger.

sure but like i'm not growing basil or..tomatoes? from seeds. And sure, the kids'll help, though that makes everything take much longer and no longer is a "okay, 20 minute work break to open a bag of dirt and sprinkle some seeds"

Growing veggies from seed will take some luck, practice and a warm

a crapshoot, I've tried it without success.

Re: What's Your Thing?

Depends on what you're growing. For basil, dump seeds in ground in April, cover with dirt, wait for rain or water occasionally, eat more basil than you ever dreamed of by June. When I lived in a black vinyl pen in New Jersey, I grew it on my relatively light-deprived windowsill. You pretty much can't not grow basil. Cilantro, same thing. Heck, if you ignore the cilantro, it just re-seeds itself, and you can either plant the seeds or pick them (that's coriander).

On the other hand, I still haven't figured out tomatoes. They have to be started in pots, somewhere warm. Then handled very delicately, like a newborn kitten except green and with roots. Then, once they're transplanted outside, you need to be sure just to give them the right amount of water and light, and also make sure they feel loved and cared for. Socialization with endives helps, I'm told. Best I've ever done from tomatoes is about five pounds from about ten plants, or enough to make a quart or two of sauce.

Before that, we spent the weekend doing small repairs and making hiking sorties to parks featuring waterfalls (weirdly enough), taking great pains to keep at several arms' length from any other hoomans, though many others seemed to be... not.
