When to Fold 'Em: Kenny Rogers, 1938-2020 (Split from Guess Who Died?)

Kenny Rogers, 81, who owned a good chunk of adult contemporary radio for a long spell. (Plus the chicken franchise, which, no joke, was as good as that kind of thing got.)

I remember Kenny Rogers Roasters. They really did make good chicken. At one point, my wife and I were eating there weekly!

And apparently the franchise is still in business... in Malaysia!

I don't expect that I'll be in Malaysia anytime soon. Or more than a few miles from home any time soon.

I still haven't forgiven him for the 1999 NLCS.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2020

My hometown of Rockville Centre, despite having as many mooks per capita as any other place in the Town of Hempstead, had a thing about trash culture going way back, and so had an ordinance forbidding any chain restaurants from setting up shop. We had a couple of spots that were grandfathered in — one plot that had a Wetson's, then an Arthur Treacher's, and finally a Taco Bell. We might have had a Friendly's and a Sizzler in the corners too somewhere, I think, but it was generally understood that Taco Bell was the only nod at billboard food, and they were lucky to be among us.

But sometime in the late eighties, Rogers Roasters applied for a waiver, and the village board was flummoxed. First, they figured he licensed his name and this was just his face on some soul-less corporation. But then it became clear that this was his initiative, and there were only like three of the restaurants so far so we were expected to be proud to be among the first flagship locations of this operation.

I'm sure, to the last council member, they suspected Kenny Rogers was as rapacious and cold as any other business interest, but he had done such a good job crafting his public image, that none of them wanted to be the person who said no to Kenny. It would be like saying no to America. And he got his waiver.

Along with stuff like that, he got crazy big contracts for extended residencies in casino towns. To have one of the biggest tours in America and never have to move must have been filthy lucrative. I suspect, in his final years, Michael Jackson would stay awake thinking, "Yeah, I'm real rich, but I'm not Kenny Rogers rich."

Anyways, for a guy who went from folk to jazz to acid rock to the top of the game in country to lite soul to adult contemporary, I hope he enjoys his next act.

That Rogers Chicken joint was right near the RVC/Baldwin border, so maybe the village fathers thought it far enough from the cent[CROSSOUT]er[/CROSSOUT]re of town not to spoil ambiance.

The thing about Rogers' wholesome image is that it got him a long-term endorsement contract from Dole. Unfortunately that was soon followed by some leaked tapes where Kenny was talking

dirty to women. Turned out it was from a call-line set up specifically for that purpose. Kenny fessed up to it and made no apologies for it ['I just like talkin' dirty to women'] but that was the

end of the gravy train from Dole.

I saw Dolly's video earlier today and have to confess that the air was quite dusty.

Who had more "work done" over the years, Kenny or Dolly?

Overall it's gotta be Dolly, although if we restrict things to just facial work done it's probably close.

Kenny Rogers Roasters reigned on Sunrise Highway in RVC from 1994 to 2002. Uncommonly cheerful service for a South Shore fast casual chain operation. And oh those corn muffins.

Then one day I drove by that location and it was a McDonald's.

Mrs. MD: "I'm surprised your friends are all thinking about the chicken restaurant. You mention Kenny Rogers and the first thing that pops into my head is that he's responsible for the Eagles."

Here's a notion: Did Kenny's records lead all catalogs in Long Distance Dedications on America's Top 40? "Through the Years," "We've Got Tonight," "You Decorated My Life," "Love the World Away," "She Believes in Me" ... his oeuvre was, like, LDD Gold.

Rogers introduced Henley's Texas-based band Shiloh to SoCal, and got them a record contract. Frey had a separate band on the same label, they met, did backing gigs with Linda Ronstadt, and eventually turned into Eagles.

I just finished, at Edgy Wifey's suggestion, Don Felder's book HEAVEN AND HELL, which gives you a good idea of what complete dicks Frey and Henley were. Also exposes Felder to be numbingly naive as to his own role in the Eagles personnel issues and unrealistic as how to solve them.

I first became aware of Kenny Rogers when he was doing commercials in 1974 for the Quick Pickin' Fun Strummin' Home Guitar Course. I tried to find the video on YouTube to post here, but came up empty.

Re: When to Fold 'Em: Kenny Rogers, 1938-2020 (Split from Guess Who Died?)

The story of late-sixties/early-seventies Kenny is odd in a dozen ways.

The First Edition were founded as a sort of reconciliation act, in that they were meant to have a hippy aesthetic but a more patriotic, mainstream worldview. It was a hip, 30%-more-rocking version of Rogers' prior act, The New Christy Minstrels, who did an anti-college protestor song as early as 1965. But neither were they reactionary apologists. They had a variety show shot in Canada that featured a lot more edgy and rocking acts than the standard Bob Mackey cheese that was fast becoming the standard in the U.S.

But while their signature song "I Just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition Is In" was sort of easy listening acid rock, or a more accessible Cream, they weren't really rockers either. They were a country and folk act who would rock when called on, but they were also an ensemble, passing the vocals around, and Kenny getting his name above the band's was clearly his Don Henley-like alpha-male power-play, especially since they not only shared the vocals, other band members were far more prolific songwriters. (Martin Michael Murphy was a member, and Karen Carpenter sang with them briefly in their formative period, too.)

But then they made the record — a double LP old west concept album called The Ballad of Calico. It predicted the Eagles Desperado, except it was far more ambitious, and more concept-y than that, with each band member assigned characters from whose point of view they sang from, and an insert book and shit. They took the better part of a year recording it.

It was as unsuccessful as it was ambitious, and while the band didn't break up, they began disintegrating and would never be a big hit again, leading to Rogers next career as a Quick-Pickin' and Fun-Strummin' pitch-man and triumphant solo artist.

When Lionel Richie's "Stuck on You" came out I was convinced it was a Kenny Rogers song. Only recently did I learn that Richie was good friends with Rogers and wrote songs for him and other country artists.

Those New Christy Minstrels were the inspiration for the ostensibly squeaky-clean cult group in A Mighty Wind, IIRC.

Like KC, I had NO idea about the Eagles thing. Folk, psychedelic-lite, country-rock, learn-guitar-remotely, LDD ballads, fast casual restaurants... he was basically Zelig, only less commie-Jewy and shit.

There were a couple of other careers in there I can think of:
•
Starring in made-for-TV movies, usually based on the lyrics of one of his hit songs:
•
Coward of the County;

  •
The Gambler, also featuring Bruce Boxleitner who recently lit up the screen in Murder at the World Series;

  •
Um .... The Saga of Sonora.
  •
•
Getting at least one cinematic leading-man opportunity, in Six Pack. The film featured Erin Gray as his love interest as he played a stock car racer with a cocky, look-out-world, here-I-come attitude, though he was barely hanging on the circuit. The lifeline for his career — and his soul — is when he gets mixed up with a family of six orphans trying to stay one step ahead of the law as they rip off car parts. The family included an adorable teenaged Diane Lane and a smart-mouthed young Anthony-Michael Hall, and some chunky kid who sang "Rocky Top, Tennessee" with a lovely soprano voice.

Tagline: Six Pack — They're gonna steal ... your heart.
  •

•
Any number of Christmas specials, which mostly all end the same way, with all the special guests coming out to sing an encore carol together, and somewhere between the start of verse two, and the second chorus, fake snow starts to fall on the performers from over the stage, and Kenny puts his hand out and looks up as if to say, "Holy fucking shit! Snow! Indoors! Of all the ... I'm the producer of this show and this is a surprise to me! What will they think of next?! It's a miracle!" Every time.
  •

•
Talkin' dirty to women.
  •
