This Rolling Stone story appeared in my feed yesterday. It's both fascinating and really sad.

I knew they weren't getting along at the end, but I didn't realize that had gone on for so long. Johnny comes off as a really challenging person. But he was really nice to me in the one random encounter I had with him.

Re: "Curse of the Ramones"

For those who need context, Joey supposedly wrote that song about Johnny stealing his girlfriend. And some accounts had him actually using anti-Semitic insinuations to turn her family against Joey.

Another account, from Joey's brother, was that it was about a black girlfriend of his whose family made her stop seeing him.

But even if the first account was wrong, what a kick in the nuts to Johnny to have to play it every night knowing that, if it isn't about him, a big chunk of the fans think it is.

Stole his girl and married her, yet they played on and on and on...

Re: "Curse of the Ramones"

The real story, to me, is that, as fucked up in different ways they all were, and as much as they drove each other crazy, they were each devoted to the vision of the band.

They never took a plane, and hardly even the rare bus. They did tour after out of a van into their fifties, Johnny and Joey sitting next to each other and never talking. After Richie failed as a drummer, Marky and Tommy seemed to agree to take turns being in the band, both of them sick of the shit but committed to keeping the flag flying. Tommy probably got more of the rare guitar solos on the records than Johnny, who turned in a few, but was shy about breaking out of his comfort zone. DeeDee had the biggest and deepest song catalog and he was probably more fucked up than any of them. And he and Tommy kept giving the band songs even when they were no longer members, with Tommy returning to produce as well.

That's kind of beautiful, considering that it's not like the band was making them filthy rich.

Wow, 20 years today since Joey exited stage right. Where the hell did those two decades go?
