It's here! It's official! And it's all happening! It's the MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Contest!

Youse know how this generally works. Pick a song. And then parody it. Come up with your own original words to the actual melody of an existing song. And build that parody around an actual Mets player. Write the best parodies here and you can go far. And fly high. And never die. And take home the tournament championship cup -- an exact replica of the drinking cup served at Ron Swoboda and Ed Kranepool's old Amityville Dugout restaurant. Only you don't really get to take the cup home. Or even get to touch it. The cup stays with me. Anyways, we've got thirteen contestants. Here's the field:

kcmets

LWFS

Fman

seawolf

Ceetar

LunchBucket

G-FAFIF

TransMonk

cal-sharpie

metsmarathon

EdgyMD

Willets Point

Lefty Specialist

And here's the rules for the first round.

The first round will be a wild west free for all. All 13 contestants will be lumped together and compete against each other in a jungle round. The top eight vote-getters advance to the quarterfinals, and from there on out, it's single elimination head-to-head matchups in an NCAA basketball March Madness bracket style tournament, all the way to the end of this contest, until this year's champion is crowned.

So, pick a song. Any song. And parody that song.

But build that song around a Mets player -- any player that played at least one game for a Terry Collins managed major-league Mets team.

And because I know youse are all watching a lot of TV in this, the time of the coronavirus (Nielsen predicts that pandemic related self-quarantining and isolation will drive up TV viewing by 60%), there's a TV themed wrinkle to this contest. And here it is:

Youse got to work in a reference, or references, to one of these TV shows in your song parody:

The Americans

Arrested Development

Breaking Bad

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Dexter

Game of Thrones

Mad Men

The Office

The Shield

Six Feet Under

The Sopranos

South Park

The Wire

How substantial or how minor your TV reference is, is up to youse. But youse take a chance with the voters. Contest rules state that your TV reference(s) should count for 30% of your vote score.

When your parodies are completed, please private mesage them to me, along with the title of the song youse are parodying, a YouTube video of the song, and the names of the Terry Collins Met and the TV show youse are referencing.

We're going anonymous, so don't disclose your contest entries.

Voting is open to any forum member, whether or not you're competing in the MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Contest!

First round submissions are due no later than Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at Noon.

Good luck.

Youse are on the clock.

I've digested more Sopranos than could be imagined. I also have all seasons on

DVD, mostly gifted through the years. I think I've said here I have season 1 and 2 of

The Wire on DVD but still haven't binged it yet.

I've never watched more than 3 minutes at a time of a Survivor episode.

Survivor can fuck itself in its various openings. Same with Big Brother (ironically, my wife's two favorite shows).

I bailed on The Wire in season 2. The docks were hella boring to me.

I was thinking I might download and watch the Sopranos though. I've heard good things.

the only reality show I watch is the Great British Bake Off, but that's not cutthroat.

Re: The MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Contest - all purpose thread

The Wire Season 2 isn't my favorite by any means-- really, it's all a nagging Ziggy problem-- but it's a finished, mostly-fully-realized piece, which puts just above Season 5 (some great moments, but overall so, so ramshackle) for me. And if you don't get through Season 2, you don't get to Hamsterdam and such. (Spoiler: you REALLY should.)

Not complaining, just saying... this teevee angle is DEFINITELY complicating things, writing-wise. I've seen pretty much all of these, so it's not about lack of familiarity with the shows... it's just awkward. My first one feels like trying to rediscover your pitching motion after a loooooong off-season, only you're also asked to incorporate a couple of wedding-dance moves into said motion.

Actually, for me, these days, if I just take the URL of the YouTube clip I want to share and paste it into a post here, it displays.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDdDWXhCQOw

If that's not working for you, or doesn't play for some folks at the other end, just delete everything but the part following ?v=

In the case of this video that bit at the end of the URL is is DDdDWXhCQOw

Highlight that and click the YOUTUBE button above your post window on the far right of the editing tools.

Give it a try! Learning can be FUN! But if none of this shit works for you, a kind administrator will edit your post to fix.

less "contest rules state that your TV reference(s) should count for 30% of your vote score."

So I'd like to TV-up my entry up some if I can.

Re: The MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Contest - all purpose thread

Rules for the Quarterfinals:

Youse still know how this generally works. Anyways, we're down to our eight quarterfinalists.

Everybody's asked to remain anonymous -that includes all contestants, even the four that have been eliminated in the first round.

All quarterfinalists will compete in single elimination head-to-head matchups in an NCAA basketball March Madness bracket style tournament, all the way to the end of this contest, until this year's champion is crowned. The bracket seeding has been determined by an objective, formulaic method, which will be disclosed at the end of the tournament.

So, pick a song. Any song. And parody that song.

But build that song around a Mets player -- any player that played at least one game for a Yogi Berra managed major-league Mets team.

And youse got to work in a reference, or references, to one of these TV shows in your song parody:

All in the Family

The Jeffersons

Laverne and Shirley

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

M*A*S*H

Mork and Mindy

The Odd Couple

The Partridge Family

SOAP

Welcome Back, Kotter

WKRP in Cincinnati

How substantial or how minor your TV reference is, is up to youse. But youse take the chance of incurring the voters' wrath. Contest rules state that your TV reference(s) should count for 30% of your vote score. Youse voters are free to interpret this rule as youse see fit, bringing your own personal worldviews into the analysis -- and making your own quality and quantity assessments.

When your parodies are completed, please private mesage them to me, along with the title of the song youse are parodying, a YouTube video of the song, and the names of the Yogi Berra Met and the TV show youse are referencing.

We're still anonymous, so don't disclose your contest entries.

Voting is open to any forum member, whether or not you're competing in the MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Contest!

Quarterfinals round submissions are due no later than Thursday, April 30, 2020 at 11:59PM. I will post the quarterfinals polls and your song entries beginning at any time that I see fit, after the aforesaid quarterfinal deadline, without further announcement. Think of the period after the deadline like soccer stoppage time, where youse don't really know precisely when the real deadline will strike. But it will strike. And anyone whose entry is not submitted when the quarterfinals polls are posted will be charged with a forfeit. Anybody who needs more time beyond the deadline should PM me.

The Sixties are coming to the MeTV 2020 Crane Pool Cup Song Parody Semi-Finals. Here's a sneak preview:

Semi-Finals Sneak Preview:

The theme of the next round will be the 1960s. Semi-finalists will parody a song themed around a Met who played at least one game for the 1969 Mets and was not parodied in the quarterfinals round. Also include a reference to at least one of the following TV shows:

Batman

F Troop

The Flintstones

Get Smart

Gilligan's Island

Hogan's Heroes

I Dream of Jeannie

The Monkees

The Munsters

Star Trek (The 60s TV show a/k/a TOS - "The Original Series")

Finally, you must parody a song that was released in the decade of the 1960's -- an original song, no covers. Please consult Wikipedia to determine the release date of your chosen song.

I'm trying to find a Mets cross-reference with each show. Batman featured the actors doing a live show in character at Shea. The Munsters featured "The Fregosi Curse." But rounding up all the others would take a deeper dive than I've got time for.

The first round was a reminder that even the best fake lyrics and clever TV references demand the right song for our old white and slow demographic. I'm advising my clients to approach this thing by first finding the right song, then the right subject matter, and finally TV references. Also, stories are better than descriptions, just like most real songs

Outstanding concept and execution. Congrats to all of the entrants, especially Champion G-Fafif.

I was right about almost all my suspicions of the mystery parodists but I had Cal Sharpie as my imaginary finalist vs. fafif.

I'd also like to reveal that the controversial 3 way tie in the quarterfinals was broken when I voted against my own submission, not because I didn't prefer it but because I'd run out of CAHNfidence I belonged in the semis.

Congrats to all participants

Wow! Did you submit the actual tie-breaking 7th vote?

Fantastic work. Congratulations, all. I think this may be G-FaFiF's second victory.

In virtually every round, I came up with something better after my submission was sent in.

It's his second in a row. He won the last contest before this one -- the Crane Pool to Liverpool.

Third, wow. Great job. I won the first year and I've been shut down ever since. The nights can be long and unsettling, replaying my choices over and over, where I zigged when I could have zagged.

sharpie does some of the best work year in and year out but never seems to get the breaks.

I think it was 4-4-4 when I moved but that changed the trajectory. As a bonus, I made Lunchpail learn the Aqualung riff on guitar

Mazel tov, Fafif. I haven't looked at the CPF for a while and didn't vote in the finals. Would have been a tough choice.

I had Edgy pegged for Jay Hook and G-Fafif for Willie Mays. Looking at the others, I think I guessed wrong on all of them, except for seeing the hand of LWFS in "Atlantic City" and using the old noggin to figure out who among the Upstate Jews in this forum could have written the Anthony Recker song.

Sharpie's "Anthony Young Revisited" and Lunchbucket's "Tales of Big Frank Howard" remain my all time favorite parodies.

Congrats G-FaFiF! I don't mind losing to a legend. Paradise by the Dashboard Light- we're not worthy.

I had misgivings about doing Willie. I've always felt sad about his time as a Met, and what came out was a bit sad as well.

Thanks Batmags for setting this up and herding all the cats.

Note to self: Next year, more dick jokes.

This was really close.

A well run contest, kudos all around.

These were actually fun to read and sing-along.

Lefty - wait 'till next year.

G-FaFiF, not bad, kid. Did you ever think of writing for a living? :)

I don't even remember Tales of Big Frank Howard.

Edit: found it in the 'chives.

A skinny young rightfielder comes dashing from Tidewater,

And you want to take him with you to stop the nightly slaughter.

Lots of funny stuff in those 'chives. The one I remember was Kenny Rogers in Roundabout: http://archives.thecranepool.net/1900/f18_t1915.shtml

And Greg's triumphant Paul LoDuca finals victory: http://archives.thecranepool.net/11100/f18_t11150.shtml

I think my most notable victory, dick jokes aside, was that I beat G-Fafif in a semifinal round at some point in the last 5-6 years.

I was hoping to get one more round in, but, c'est la vie. I like to think that I retain my title as "CPF'er most likely to make a unique genitalia reference."

One day, that award will be named in your honor. I think erecting a statue would be redundant.
