It's finally here. This is where the rubber hits the road and your votes count. Anyone may vote. Please select your seven favorite song parodies from the 12 first round entries. You must choose seven entries. And give this exercise some good thought because like a presidential election, your votes are final and cannot be changed, once submitted. The top eight vote getters will advance to the next round, the quarterfinals, which will be comprised of single elimination head to head match-ups. Any ties will be decided by further rounds of voting until we have eight quarterfinalists. The 12 entries are listed in alphabetical order according to the last name of the Met that is the subject of the parody.

Quarterfinals Sneak Preview:

The theme of the next round will be the 70s. Quarterfinalists will parody a song themed around a Met who played at least one game for a Yogi Berra managed Mets team and also include a reference to at least one of the following TV shows:

All in the Family

The Jeffersons

Laverne and Shirley

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

M*A*S*H

Mike Baxter - "Believe it or Not" (The Great American Hero Theme Song) - Joey Scarbury

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcsMPyjwav8

The Ballad of Mike Baxter

Look at what's happened to me

I can't believe it myself

Suddenly crumpled up in a heap

It could have been somebody else

Believe it or not, I'm catching that ball

I never thought I could feel so free

Flyin' away until I hit that wall

How could I see?

Believe it or not it's just me

Just when I'm getting a chance to play

Hit to me from out of the blue

Over my head but I reeled it in

Made Howie Rose wishes come true

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air

Johan bought a new Rolex for me

Slicker than Paulie Walnut's hair

Who could it be?

Believe it or not- 23!

This is too good to be true

Met fans I did it for you

Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air

Painkillers do that to me

Taken to Special Surgery...

Who could it be?

Believe it or not - 23!!

I'm pretty psyched that there was a "Believe it or Not" promo video and not just a string of TV clips, but performance footage and models and stuff.

Carlos Beltran - "The Call" - Backstreet Boys

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMOkm57vu0k

Intro:

'ere we go

Up to me - big three hitter

History chasing - i'm facing wainwright tonight

Bases are full of mets for me okay

Down by two

See that breaking!

A curve?!

It's really dropping now.

That pitch he had, i didn't know

Watching our hope for the series

Like Tony when he lifts his eyes, the night...

Ended so.

--

Let me tell you the story 'bout the curve that got the best of me

Bases loaded two outs 'bout to go down in history

Was standing at home the whole season laid out in front of me

And Wainwright, he spun a little pitch and I... let it go.

That pitch he can't throw, scouts were saying to me

Umpire called out strike three out in stead

With a bat on my shoulder

That sad history won't recur

That same mistake won't be made i guarantee

The way we can i figured out technology will show

With the Astros - we're gonna to rely the signs

So we know

Now three years from the thing we won

the parade was whack we had our fun

Oakland's Mike Fiers let out cheaters banging the garbage can

My reputation has been fried

Managing a team I tried

Fired because I lied 'bout all the lies

Listen to all the banging

They wanna tell me it's curving

the pitch will break don't get out in front of it

changing signs we'll pick 'em up the camera will show

The Astros know, the movement of the pitch is high

when it's thrown

Listen to all the banging (a curve)

Listen to all the banging (a curve)

Listen to all the banging (a curve)

Watch the curve

Let me tell you the story 'bout the curve that got the best of me

Bases loaded two outs 'bout to go down in history

Was standing at home the whole season laid out in front of me

And Wainwright, he spun a little pitch and I... let it go.

Jerry Blevins - "Just Like Heaven" - The Cure

Loogy loogy loogy with a pencil neck

The one that makes Bryce swing and miss

The one guy we want on the case

To solve the crime, then hit the bench

Loogy, how'd you do it? We promise you,

We promise that, we'll always go to you,

When there's a job to do

Spinning sliders on the black

Kiss the edge and miss the bat

Dreamed of all the different days we asked to make him throw

Why are you so rubber-armed we said

Why won't you ever know that we're in love with you?

When there's a lefty due?

You, one and only,

You, like McNulty

You, ace the cases

Working late into the evening

Setting traps with Bunk and Freamon

And Pryzbylewski

Just for Utley

Barksdale, he was put away

Like Freddy Freeman of the Braves

And Corey Seager of LA

One bad guy at a time

You find yourself alone, alone, alone, replacing Matt Harvey

To jam the lefty at the plate and drown him on a called strike three

You, quirky lefty

You, curveball's zesty

You, Jerry Blevins

Michael Conforto - "Tempted" - Squeeze

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5g7NdWV8ig

ATTEMPTING (TO REPLACE A GOLD GLOVER)

They tried Yoenis, and Nimmo

Moved Granderson from right

De Aza … Aoki

Ty Kelly for a night

They even called on Reyes

But he was awful at first sight

Terry Collins asked his people

His pitcher on the hill

“Our centerfielder's injured

And lousy options still keep coming

And coming”

He'll give me a call

I know he will

They're attempting to replace a Gold Glover!

Hoping the defense will recover!

I see what's going on …

Since the Mets lost Juan …

There's no other!

But the team needs to replace a Gold Glover!

They hope there's hidden skills to discover ...

In the clubhouse, Terry's office

The coaches congregate

I can hear them talking loudly

(Terry's hearing isn't great)

Dick Scott says “Try Conforto!”

I want to defecate

“His dad was a linebacker

His mother sure can swim!”

Tom Goodwin's at my locker

And the news is kind of grim

“Hey, Conforto …

… you're in center …

… and regret it all …

I know we will!!”

“We're attempting to replace a Gold Glover!

Though you move like a late-stage Danny Glover!

With an injured spine …

In Lethal Weapon 9

There's no other!

So we hope you can replace a Gold Glover!

It's you or it's Tom Glavine's kid brother!”

I watched The Wire with McNulty

I'm too stressed to hit the sack

Tom Goodwin's not supportive

Says I'll suck 'cuz I'm not black

When you're walking through the garden

You gotta watch your back!

I'm attempting to replace a Gold Glover!

Though I'm slower than Joe Torre's grandmother!

With other options gone …

Under Jeff Wilpon …

There's no other!

They need me to replace a Gold Glover!

You can see how this book ends from the cover!”

OH, ATTEMPTING TO REPLACE A GOLD GLOVER!!

OH, GOODWIN IS A GUY I SHOULD SMOTHER!!

Lucas Duda - "Sympathy for the Devil" - The Rolling Stones

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgnClrx8N2k

SYMPATHY FOR THE DUDA

Please allow me to introduce myself

I'm a man who played first base

I stuck around for near eight years

And kept that blank look on my face

I was 'round when Ike Davis

Had his moment of pop-up sprain

Made damn sure that blowhard

Lost his job and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you

Hope you guess my name

'Cause what's confounding you is just that

Muff in the fifth game

I played in Port St. Lucie town

When those Mad Men came on AMC

Watchin' Don and the miniskirts

While poor Betty pouts in vain

I played in left but my fielding stank

When the balls were missed and my face stayed blank

Pleased to meet you

Hope you guess my name, oh yeah

'Cause what's grumbling you is just the

Muff in the fifth game

You all blame me for the loss I think

But I had two walks and a big ribbie

I shouted out "who blew that two-run lead?"

When after all

It was Matt Harvey

Let me please introduce myself

I'm the man who played first base

I'd hit bombs to kingdom come

But my arm was never all that great

Pleased to meet you

Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah

But what's confusing you is why that

Throw was just so lame

Ah yeah, get down to it.

(doo doo doo doo)

Pleased to meet you

Hope you guessed my name

But what's confounding me is why I

Am the one you blame

Just as Jeurys blew another save

And Reed was shitty late

If you blame me, just call me Lucas or

Don't bother me with taint

So if you meet me

Have some courtesy

Have some sympathy, and some taste

Please curb your enthusiasm

For I played in Tampa Bay, oh yeah

Pleased to meet you

Oh I played first base, mm yeah

But what's irking you is just the

Ending of that game, I mean it, get down!

(doo doo doo doo)

Tell me baby

What's my name?

Tell me honey

Can you guess my name?

Yeah, it's Lucas

That's my name…..

Oh Familia!

You're blowing a lead

We're begging you please

To throw strikes

Familia!

You're putting guys on

You're killing our chance in postseason

Oh Familia!

You're losing the plate

We don't wanna hate

Just throw strikes

(Just throw strikes)

Watching Mets in the Wild Card Game

With Familia

In from the bullpen

(Watching Mets!)

Gillaspie awaits on deck

It's like Tony Soprano's

Now choking our neck

Familia!

We're down to MadBum

San Fran is ahead three to nothin'

Oh Familia!

The playoff is done

That wasn't much fun

We go home

(We go home)

Consternation!

He blew it again

October is over for our team

Pronunciation!

And, oh, by the way

How do you say

Wilmer Flores - "Jukebox Hero" - Foreigner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr6KVNt-1Ek

Standing in the field, and he's feeling low

Gonna get a ticket, thinks he's gonna have to go

He loves the Citi crowd, loves the New York scene

When his butt's to the wall, he's gonna make them scream

He'll pop one home run, it'll blow them away

He's a star in their eyes, and they hope that he'll stay

He's not a beat up sixth string, and he's always gonna score

He knows how to play it, and he knows for sure

That one home run, felt good in the stands

Everyone knew, and understands

Just one home run, swung way down low

Gonna be no ticket, 'cause he ain't gonna go

So Wil' started clockin', and he's gonna rock

Gonna keep on clockin', Wil keeps rockin' us to the top

And be a walk off hero, down to the wire

He's a walk off hero

He took one home run (walk off hero, down to the wire)

Walk off hero (down to the wire) Wil'll come alive tonight!!

Won't ever forget the name, and Wilmer's tears that poured

Wilmer dodged his shadow, and avoided the door

He reeled in what he cast, and he laughed at the rain

And that one home run, made everything change

Now he's gonna keepa a clockin', Wil just can't stop

Gotta keep on clockin', that Wil has to play on top

And be a walk off hero, down to the wire

He's a walk off hero, down to the wire

Yeah, walk off hero (down to the wire)

With that one kaboom (down to the wire)

Wil'll come alive, come alive tonight, d'oh!

Yeah, Wil's gonna keep on clockin', just can't stop

He will keep on clockin', that Wil will always never stop

And be a walk off hero, down to the wire

He's a juke box hero, down to the wire

(Just on kaboom) walk off hero,

Now he's just a walk off hero, ya ya ya

Walk off (wire) hero, (wire, wire) walk off hero, (wire, wire)

He goes down to the wire, down to the wire

Matt Harvey - "Woke Up this Morning" (The Sopranos Theme Song) - Alabama 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLxSUKA--Dg

Woke up in mourning

Woke up that morning

Thought you'd get it done

Everybody always said that you were the

Chosen one

Collins said, “you're one in a million, it's your

Chance to shine”

But he left you in one inning too long and Hosmer

Whacked it down the line

When you woke up next morning

All the love had gone

You thought you'd beat them in the 9th but you were

Really done

Made you look bad, Harvey

Your rep was now maligned

(shamed about it)

You pitched one inning too long and Hosmer

Took you down the line

So we were all in mourning

Cuz he whacked it

He whacked it down the line

Woke up in mourning

Now you wake each morning

The world turned upside down

(lord above)

You can't make a million since

You're career was redefined

Harvey's sinking fastball is a pitch he

cannot find

(shame about it)

There has been no Dark Knight since

Hosmer took him down the line

We were all in mourning

The Dark Knight's time is done

Dark Knight's time is done

Dark Knight's time is done

How the ladies lay their panties down

His game is shit but the face is the same

As it was so long ago

His lifetime line a one ninety nine

Still swimmin in Big Pussy tho

Well it's been five years and maybe more

Since he donned the orange and blue

The best years of my life gone by

Just a horned up upstate Jew

Some people hit and some people shit

And some just lay and slay

He'll just keep on Reckin' along

Cause baseball ain't his best play

People talkin all around about the way he swung that bat

I don't care what his OPS was I know where their jive is at

One thing I'm asking for a friend if you can clarify some more

Can I just dig your handsome face without you thinkin me Vito Spatafore?

Try to hit but it ain't no use

Give it to me, give it!

Jerk so hard I couldn't unwind, got some pine tar saved

Abuse my bat a thousand times however hard each time

Heart-Recker your time has come can't take your dreamy ways

Go away Heart-Recker!

The Porch glows blue in the Citi tonight

Not an offer to be seen

A shortstop hits free agency

And it looks like he's a star

The hits were mounting for the pending free agent

Couldn't get him out, Philly knows they tried

Don't bid him up, don't over pay

Keep the payroll you always have to have

Ruben, He'll play, he's just as good

Well, now he's gone

Let him go, let him go

Can't dance with him anymore

Let him go, let him go

Turn away and sign 0-Mar

We still don't think that the Marlins are good

Let Jose strike out

The Bay Harbor Butcher can have him

Let him go, let him go

Can't use his bat anymore

Let it go, let it go

Turn away and sign Jon Rauch

Let him go (go, go, go go, go go, go go, go, go, go go)

Let him go

Well they blew up old BillyWags late season last year

Now I'M in the soup like pasta fazool

Down in the bullpen gettin' ready, coach is startin' here

'Cause of some walk-off grand gabagool

Now there's stugotz yappin' from my goomah's dad

Even postgame, can't get no relief

Gonna fog up my goggles behind the Promenade

Hold Junior, baby, Old Man's gonna get one in his teeth

Well now, saves will get blown, baby, that's a fact

But come say it to my face, I'll throw blows right back

Get ready to swing, you're gonna talk so shitty

And meet me tonight in the halls at Citi

[harmonica, angry half-Spanish/half-English muttering]

Well I got two outs, gave A-Rod one high and away

And I got a can of corn Castillo coulda "Say Hey"ed

But he dropped it, and I put my arms on my hat

Then I did an angry chicken dance, you got a problem with that

Now baby, Jesus saves, baby, that is true

But when I throw these hammer curves, he can't save you

Put your game face on, get your monkey rallied

And meet me tonight in the clubhouse, Sally

[harmonica, sounds of screaming at the mother of one's children]

Now my WHIP may be bloated and my charisma is poo

So you, you can't trade me away

Gave me big money, so I'll keep closing for you

Put on some coffee, though, 'cause I'll walk the first two

And maybe those who want respect, give respect

Or maybe I'll curse at you in Spanish and work my neck...

Now I been lookin' for control, but it's a pain

Out here it's just tabloids and judges

And don't-do-this, and orders to restrain

And I'm tired of trying with my ladyfriend

So, honey, last night I met this other girl

And I'm gonna throw strikes to her, instead

Well I guess we're all trying to paint the black

But I'll paint your Carac-ass red if you're talkin' back

Call my left fist Conway, call my right one Twitty

Hello darlin', let's meet in the halls at Citi

Make your face like ri-gott in the halls at Citi

Let's tear it up in the halls at Citi

I'll tear up my thumb in the halls at Citi

"Cheating Chase Utley"

I'd never say he had committed some light treason

But, brother, I'm quite sure he had an evil reason

Why he flipped you

Donny complained that you had never even touched the base

And then the umps stopped play to look

But no one found he slid behind

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Took you out with force from a crooked slide

Nasty guy

I thought that playoff games were ones that really mattered

But you can't play here when we saw your right fibula shattered

Did not expect a lot of power from you ever

But you could play some D

And get a hit from time to time

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Took you out with force from a crooked slide

What a crime

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Took you out with force from a crooked slide

Nasty guy

Here's an inflatable brace puffed up to fit you

Now that this happened they will have to bring the cart out

The Dodgers end up with four in the inning

Would things be different if they hadn't brought Colon in?

I thought that playoff games were ones that really mattered

But you can't play here when we saw your right fibula shattered

Did not expect a lot of power from you ever

But you could play some D

And get a hit from time to time

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Took you out with force from a crooked slide

What a crime

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Took you out with force from a crooked slide

Nasty guy

Cheating Chase Utley, he aimed for you

Nasty guy

No. The rules require that each voter vote for seven parodies. From the opening post in this thread:

Anyone may vote. Please select your seven favorite song parodies from the 12 first round entries. You must choose seven entries. And give this exercise some good thought because like a presidential election, your votes are final and cannot be changed, once submitted.

We have 83 votes. Here's how we got to 83 votes:

The first five voters voted for seven parodies. That's 35 votes.

The sixth voter selected just one parody. That's 36 votes.

The next three voters voted for seven parodies. That's 57 votes.

The tenth voter selected five parodies. That's 62 votes.

The next three voters voted for seven parodies. That's 83 votes.

When you create a poll there's a checkbox that allows votes to be changed. I check that box for all Tabloid Cover Derby polls. I'm pretty sure you can do it retroactively.

I know about the " change your vote(s)" option. But that's not what KC was suggesting. KC was referring to an option where someone who, let's say, voted for five entries instead of the required seven, could go back and add two choices to get to the seven required vote totals, but without being able to change his first five votes. This is more like an add votes option instead of a change votes option.

I'd like that, but I dont think the software works like that. I think that the software either allows a voter to edit whatever votes whenever, up until the end of the poll- or doesn't allow for any edits at all once the votes are submitted.

I was thinking what Edgy and Ben were thinking just said it differently. I would

make the poll editable for a good day or so and see if the people who didn't do

the seven vote thing fix it and if you want change it back to the way it was for

the weekend do that? I dunno.

The same button that would allow for a guy who voted for only one to go back later and vote for six more is the one that allows a guy who voted for seven to have second thoughts and vote for a different seven.

I'll leave it up to Mags whether wanting the former is worth potentially allowing the latter.

That's very possible. The voter who picked five maybe didn't have strong feelings about any of the other seven entries and so voted for just five. The guy who picked just one parody might've tried to game the contest, to the extent possible, by voting only for his own song.

You get six in and it's hard to compare to next one to the first. But if you give the first one a rating — a five, a seven, a nine, whatever — it sets a benchmark. The second one gets rated relative to that, and by the third or fourth one, you're establishing norms and standards. It goes pretty quickly.

Re: The 2020 MeTV Song Parody Contest First Round

We're more than halfway to the scheduled end of the first round, with polling closing very early Monday morning. If voting closed right now, we'd have seven qualifying quarterfinalists,

Qualifying

16 - Michael Conforto - "Tempted" - Squeeze

12 - Lucas Duda - "Sympathy for the Devil" - The Rolling Stones

12 - Anthony Recker - "Heartbreaker" - Led Zeppelin

10 - Mike Baxter - "Believe it or Not" (The Great American Hero Theme Song) - Joey Scarbury

10 - Jerry Blevins - "Just Like Heaven" - The Cure

10 - Jeurys Familia - "Cecilia" - Simon & Garfunkel

10 - Matt Harvey - "Woke Up this Morning" (The Sopranos Theme Song) - Alabama 3

plus a tiebreaker to break the current two-way tie for the last quarterfinal slot.

To be Determined

8 - Francisco Rodriguez - "Atlantic City" - Bruce Springsteen

8 - Ruben Tejada - "In a Big Country" - Big Country

On the Outside, Looking In

7 - Wilmer Flores - "Jukebox Hero" - Foreigner

4 - Jose Reyes - "Let it Go" - Idina Menzel

2 - Carlos Beltran - "The Call" - Backstreet Boys

Reminder: Contestants, please don't reveal your identities and your songs at the end of this round as we're staying anonymous all the way to the end of the tournament.

I always liked this best when the original song isn't identified ahead of the parody because if I can guess what the original song is from the parody it shows good work the parodist. I also like the positive songs better than the negative ones, which means I'm in the majority since the Conforto song is running away with this.

I also want to throw a bone to the "Askin' for a friend" gag in "Heart-Wrecker": That line is as close to evergreen as a comic phrase gets. It's like camouflage clothes in the 80s and 90s. It would be in, but then it would be out, except it was SO out that it was back in again.

But then it leads into maybe the most brilliant Sopranos gag in this whole thing. It's a meter-perfect "not that there's anything wrong with that," goomba-style. That Recker song, man... it contains multitudes.

The Sopranos gags in the Recker one might be my favorite.. but really, my hat goes off to any of these that worked in their TV references-- that whole Wire stanza of the Blevins one, e.g.-- as more than just a token nod.

I missed it, too. And I've seen every episode of Arrested Development at least three times. I assumed Monk wouldn't have blown off the TV reference, but I couldn't find it. I had a feeling that this would happen -- that voters would miss a TV reference, either because they weren't familiar with the TV show in question or because the reference itself was somewhat obscure. But I figured that if I thought of that, so would the contestants --- and so write their parodies accordingly to adjust for this possibility.

I just assumed everyone would either reserve the bridge for their show ( about 30% of a song, more or less) or get at the show directly like the Sopranos or MTM writers did. I have to say it was a good wrinkle to the challenge but there really wasn't a direct effect at the finish line.
