RULES CHANGE

We've changed the format of the quarter-finals. Instead of NCAA March Madness style head to head bracket single elimination contests, as promised, we're going with another wild west jungle round free for all. This change was necessitated by the apparent dropping-out of one of our quarter-finalists, thus reducing the round to seven instead of eight contestants. Also, I wasn't quite satisfied with the lack of transparency in determining the seedings for a bracket style round. That I initially used a wholly objective and formulaic method to determine the seeds wouldn''t guarantee that youse would necessarily believe me -- and a jungle round would eliminate any griping over the seeds. I think we'll go jungle rounds the rest of the way. Anyways, there are seven of youse. The top four vote-getters advance. Any ties will be decided by further rounds of voting.

When voting, please choose your four favorite parodies. Once submitted, your votes are final and cannot be changed.

Please choose four. Not three. Or two. Or one.

Wayne Garrett - Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard - Paul Simon

Ol' Wayne Garrett's Name Up on the Scoreboard (Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard)

The general manager rolled outta bed

And he ran to old Shea Stadium

When the papers found out they began to shout

And alerted the ginger nation

Aspromonte saw

I was just too raw!

Jim Fregosi saw

I was just too raw!

Then Yogi looked down and spit on the ground

Every time my name gets mentioned

The GM said, "oy, if I get that Foy

I'm gonna stick him as my starting third baseman"

Am I gonna play?

I don't know when I'm going

Old Ed Charles was gray

I'm splitting some time

But it isn't fair

Goodbye Frego-si, I'm startin' to own ya...

Seein' ol' Wayne Garrett's name

Up on the scoreboard

Seein' me disprovin' you

down at the ballyard

Whoa, In a couple of years I start to quiet their fears

While the Mets had a storied peak

And so in seventy-three

When they gave it to me

We was all on the cover of Newsweek

And I'm on my way

I ain't no Bobby Pfeil

Heard Ted Baxter say

I'm hitting just fine

And he loves red hair

Goodbye Fregooo-si, I'm startin' to own ya...

Seein' ol' Wayne Garrett's name

Up on the scoreboard

Seein' ol' Wayne Garrett's name

Up on the scoreboard

Ron Hodges - Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meat Loaf

Well I remember every little thing

As if it happened just a year ago

Summoned up to Shea when there was only one catcher on-site

And I never dreamed my shot

Would come along quite so quickly

And all the Blues in Memphis

They were wishing they were me that night

The Eastern Division grew close and tight

Nobody was that good

No team was going right

We were sitting in the basement with a ghost of a chance

Sitting in the basement with a ghost of a chance

C'mon, hold on tight

Oh c'mon, for dear life

Though it's kinda hopeless stuck down in sixth place

I could see a smile light up on Tug McGraw's face

Ain't no doubt about it

We were hardly dead

We were less than seven out

With a month ahead

Ain't no need to resign, man

Someone alert that ol' Sign Man

Ain't no doubt about it

You gotta believe

It ain't over 'til it's over

When ya got Matlack, Koosman & Seav'

Pirates, don't ya hear our steps?

We're now recovered from our injuries

I'm mostly sitting on the bench

But watching's fun, just the same

Bucs, we're gonna let ya know

Oh, you're gonna come to regret us

I opened up my eyes

I got a big surprise

Yogi made some moves

And suddenly I'm in the game

Grote and Dyer, they were done for the night

“Ronnie,” Yogi said, “you're gonna do all right”

And we headed into extras with a ghost of a chance

Headed into extras with a ghost of a chance

C'mon, hold on tight

Oh c'mon, for dear life

Though I was sorta nervous on that Thursday night

I could see paradise by the scoreboard light

Though being third-string could certainly bite

(Could certainly bite)

Paradise by the scoreboard light

Could only do what I could

And let my pitch-framing skills do the rest

Ain't no doubt about it

We were doubly blessed

'Cause we were barely one game out and we were barely...

It's beginning to feel like Sixty-Nine

And Sixty-Nine was mighty fine

It's beginning to feel like Sixty-Nine

And Sixty-Nine was mighty fine

It's beginning to feel like Sixty-Nine

And Sixty-Nine was mighty fine

It's beginning to feel like Sixty-Nine

And Sixty-Nine was mighty fine

Dave Augustine, the Pirates' promising outfield prospect in the box

Zisk takes a slight lead off first as Sadecki looks in for the sign

Young Ron Hodges behind the plate late in his rookie season

In June he was at Double-A, now he's in the heat of a pennant race

Augustine fouls one off, over into the box seats behind first base

The ball is caught by a fan who looks very familiar to me

Why, yes, that's Archie Bunker from Astoria, right here in Queens

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bunker before tonight's game

Archie and his son-in-law Mike are guests of our sponsor Rheingold

Natural Rheingold worked with local taverns to provide two tickets

To patrons of one of the local taverns that supports Mets baseball

And Archie's name was drawn from an entry sent in by Kelsey's Bar

You know, I've got to tell you, that Mr. Bunker is a real character

He had some very provocative things to say to me when we met

He's also quite a bowler and asked if he could be on my new show

“Bowling for Dollars,” airing weeknights on WOR-TV, Channel 9

I told Mr. Bunker I'm not the one who makes those decisions

But I will say he seems ready-made for television

Augustine, who had called time, steps back into the box

He had gone over to the on-deck circle for some pine tar

Now everybody in the crowd, including Archie Bunker

Perches forward in his chair for the next pitch

This has been a tense affair from the word ‘go' tonight

We're in the top of the thirteenth inning, tied at three with two out

Again, Zisk at first, Augustine at bat with a count of two-and-one

The veteran lefty Ray Sadecki on the mound

The youngster Ron Hodges puts down his fingers for the sign

Fasten your seat belts...

***

Stop right there!

We're gonna know right now

Dave Augustine clocks it

Off Sadecki

He hits it a ton

It's surely going

Will we ever recover?

Will a two-run homer keep us from first place?

Dave Augustine's fly ball seems destined for space

Is it going?

Is there a way it's not going?

Can we get it

Before it goes?

Will Augustine's fly ball somehow not clear the fence?

Might there still be an outcome that eludes common sense?

We're gonna know right now

If we can go any further

And still win this

And then maybe the pennant

Well, keep an eye on it

Maybe, maybe keep an eye on it

Keep an eye on it

We could pick up ground by Friday morning

Well, keep an eye on it

Maybe, maybe Cleon's tryin' it

Jones is at the track

The track they put out there for his warning

Well, keep an eye on it

Maybe, maybe it's dyin', it's —

The ball is not out!

It could be a new day that is dawning

We're gonna know right now

That it's in play

Off the top of the wall

Yes it's in play

No it didn't leave Shea

It took a crazy high bounce into Cleon Jones' glove

Seems our chances at first place have been given a shove

We're gonna know right now

If we can go any further

We might love this

We might love this forever

What's it gonna be, Zisk?

Come on, you can hardly run

What's it gonna be, Zisk?

Score or not?

What's it gonna BE, Zisk?

Safe... or... OUT?

Keep an eye on Zisk

Richie isn't fast enough for this

Well, keep an eye on Zisk

Maybe we'll nab him with a relay

We're gonna know right now

Will we love this?

Will we love this forever?

Where's the relay?

Will Cleon reach Garrett?

If Garrett grabs the relay

Will he get it to me?

Can I block the plate fully

And withstand Richie Zisk?

We're gonna know right now

If we go any further

If we'll love this

If we'll love this forever

Keep an eye on Zisk

Will we love this forever?

Keep an eye on Zisk

Will we love this forever?

I caught the ball from Wayne Garrett

For a play at the plate

Then I tagged Richie Zisk, whose speed did not rate

I heard the ump John McSherry call him “OUT!” and not safe

And we would love this to the end of time

I swore, we'd love this to the end of time

Then I delivered the game-winning hit

John Milner scored on my drive

We ended the night just a half a game out

In the playoffs we were soon to arrive

I'd play eleven more years

And they weren't the worst

But nothing could match

The thrill of coming in first

Backup 'til the end of time

It's just what I would do (woo-wooo!)

Yet you'll see in the rotunda

My number

The number I wore

Was Forty-Two

It was long ago and it was far away

And that ball, somehow, well, it never left Shea

It was long ago and it was far away

Augustine, you can see, is a footnote today

It was long ago and it was far away

No, I'm not related to Gilbert Ray

Felix Millan - Aqualung - Jethro Tull

Sitting on the Mets bench

Eyeing shallow right with bad intent

Squatting in his batting pose

Easy contact, slappy bat control, hey, F Millan

Stroking on his porn ‘stache

Poking singles with his swinging ash, hey, F Millan

Bunting from his choke-up

Sacrificing the lead runner up, oh, F Millan

October cold, first game of the Series

Takes a grounder the only way he knows

Fucks it up bad, as he bends to pick the ball up

It rolls down underneath, a costly E

Feeling alone, the next man up is Rudi

Campy steals on Matlack and Grote

F. Millan, my friend, don't you start to feel uneasy

When Rudi drives in the second run unearned

Do you still remember

The Partridge Family

And the song that clings into your brain

“Come on and get happy”?

But your error dooms the Mets best chance

And even Keith's mellow sounds

Won't sooth the hurt

And madness ‘till the spring

Moving along, an August game in Pittsburgh

Takes a double-play ball, a 6-4-3

Ott slides in bad, he takes you off your feet and

You slug him in the face to start a fray

Three Rivers turf, man that surface hurts

Separating your shoulder on a body slam

F. Millan, my friend, don't you start to feel uneasy

When your broken collarbone won't ever heal

Feeee, Fee, Fee, Fee. Fee-Fee, Fee-Fee, Fee-Felix

Fee-Fee-Fee, Fee-Fee-Fee, Fee-Fee, Felix

F. Millan, my friend, don't you start to feel uneasy

When your broken collarbone won't ever heal

Swinging at the first one

Hit behind the runner, to drive in a run

Warning-track power strong

“I Think I Love You” is his second-favorite song, hey F. Millan

Choking up on on his bat

Batting average is his favorite stat, hey F. Millan

Feeling like a poor schmuck

Good career with a lot of rotten luck, hey F. Millan

Oh, eff Millan

Felix Millan/John Stearns - Bad, Bad Leroy Brown - Jim Croce

Song Title: "That Big, Dumb Jerk, Ed Ott"

Well in the days of Yogi Berra

There was a shortstop named Millan

And his baseball card

Got the fans all hard

And so his legend still lives

He was small and He was wiry

Lord, He choked up on the bat

He was a contact hitter

And there are some still bitter ‘bout

How Ed Ott put out The Cat!

That big …

.. dumb …

… jerk, Ed Ott

Thinking o' him still gets me hot!

Bigger than a freshman's bong

Dumber than a wooden log

Now, Millan came from Atlanta

In the time of Willie Mays

With our keystone tenant

Man, we won the pennant

Turning beaucoup double plays!

He was a stubborn contact hitter

He got MVP support!

Though he had less power

Than a wilting flower

Man, Ed Ott was a shitty sport!

That dull …

… foul …

… douche, Ed Ott

Five stupid letters is all he got!

Duller than a game of Pong

Stinky like a Georgia bog

It was an August doubleheader

The year was mostly gone

But the Mets still battled

So Mister Ed got rattled

It was the sad end of Millan

Ott slid into second

It was a standard, legal tag

But he twisted Felix

Into a double helix

And they called for a body bag!

It was that ug- …

… -ly ...

… fuck Ed Ott

Took him out with cheap-assed shot!

Ugly as Lou Grant in a thong

And meaner than a demagogue

Well, the Mets had Archie Bunker

They had Oscar Madison

But some bad years beckoned

As Flynn played second

And Millan went to Nippon

But Stearns, he still remembered

And payback is his law

I bet Ott felt cruddy

As Dude avenged his buddy

When he crushed Dave Parker's jaw

‘Cuz he's a horse-

-shit

Guy, Ed Ott

You say, “Name an asshole,” he's all I've got!

Ignorant and woebegone

Denser than the London fog

And he's a bad …

… dude …

John F. Stearns

Ott fucks with us, and Ott, he learns

Felix you were treated wrong

But Stearns, he wrote the epilogue

Ray Sadecki - Love is All Around (The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song) - Sonny Curtis (Live perforfmance by Joan Jett)

"Ray is All Around"

Who can coax the Reg out with a slurve?

Who can take a mop-up frame, and make Pops Stargell look Papa Smurf?

Well it's you, you old rocksteady

Better get loose, here comes another doubleheady

Ray is all around-- you need, he'll fake it

He can set 'em down, do what it takes, kid

He'll keep the ball right on the wall

How will you get out on the mound?

You started lots for Gil

But Yogi treats you like you boned his hound

You used to ride with Gibson

Now, ride Norway pine like you're watching Ibsen

Tugger's knocked around? Ray will no-breeze it.

Matlack's melting down? Hey, he can freeze it.

He'll keep the ball right on the wall

(He'll keep the balls right to the wall)

Still, when Seaver's running out of steam

You'll keep a real cool head

And save a mess like you're Oxy Clean

Everyone at Shea adores you

At least this constant warm-up never bores you

Stone is getting rocked? Ray can smooth-jazz it

Kooz's getting fucked? He'll mop that jizz, kid

He'll keep the ball right on the wall

Who can make that slo-pitch curveball dance?

Who... if you give him half of a fucking chance?

Your old veteran lefty shogun

Save more staff than an Extra-Magnum Trojan

McAndrew's working blue? Ray won't get rude, then

Seaver's throwing poo? Well, we're just screwed then

But he'll keep your balls inside the wall

(If it'll stay atop the wall)

It's been difficult to vote on em as much as talk about em.

The dramatic, viruostic pomposity of Aqualung as applied to a slap hitting second baseman is really the joke itself. The Croce Millan one has a funnier description of the fight.

I've Been Everywhere works with the subject matter well and efficienly parameters the TV thing

Paradise seems like finals material in the semifinals. It's like Seaver on 3 day's rest or Harvey in the bottom of the 9th. We'll see whether they blew their load.

Surprised to see Simon & G make another appearance after Cecilia failed to burn up the charts in Round 1. If it advances and it looks like it might, bonus points for risk.

I confess to have never really watched a single episode of MTM.

Props for the appropriateness of King Kong but worried the voting public would overlook the song.

It felt REALLY familiar. Like, it encompassed everything, and worked really well, and fit in the TV references... but it didn't feel quite as... tailored as some of the others.

I dug the Foy line from "Me and Julio," which felt lived in and had a bounce to it. Though others-- Sadecki, Aqualung-- have their moments, Julio and Paradise are my standouts.

Paradise is about as great a parody as I've ever seen on this forum. It hits all the right notes. The Mets history, the minutiae.... the details. And it works in the TV reference in a meaningful way. The Archie Bunker/Phil Rizzuto interlude is much more than just TV name dropping and a contrived TV nod. I can't believe there are four voters here who left it off their ballots, thinking that there were four better parodies in this round than Paradise

They could just all be super-haters of that song and/or artist. I could accept that.

Yeah, "I'm not familiar with the source song" = bad reason to vote against a song. (Use the Internet! Learn!)

"The source song makes me want to kill somebody I love" = perfectly reasonable justification for voting against a song.

We're in the home stretch, here folks! Fifty-four minutes until voting closes! Get your elderly neighbors into the car and get them to the polling places!

Collectively, probably not, but I suspected "The Call" had to do some upstream swimming.
