To-Do List

You're a Mets exec. The team is off the field, and the owners are pre-occupied with either selling the franchise or shoring themselves up enough to get through this season. Despite working from home and having to work with outside partners that are hard to get a hold of, you find yourself with an unexpected combination of time and freedom, and realize it's a good time to cross off one or two big tasks that just linger out there. Not baseball decisions really, but corporate/commercial/branding/partnerships-type stuff. Where do you start?

Gotta get the Mets the fuck off CBS-AM, right?

Re: To-Do List

what's wrong with CBS? it's fine.

just spit-balling, but I might like to transform the game experience which might not be wise at the moment with the uncertainty.

I have not yet been to a game in Japan, but as I gather it's a lot more of an inclusive type experience, with player chants and the like. You can't necessarily replicate that here, nor can you take something that should be fan-created and created it yourself, but you can maybe cultivate it. Tone down the volume of the speakers and create more of them so all people can still hear. Give in to the idea that when a game is really hopping and the crowd is screaming, it's okay if they can't here the Lets Go Mets prompt.

There should be no (except maybe one 'quietier' section for fans that need that) place in the stadium where you can't hear the game. make sure the radio is playing, or the SNY feed is playing, somewhere, audibly, in the bathrooms, the concourses, the shops, everywhere. Citi Field is light years better at this than say, Shea where once you departed your seat you were basically on a crowded subway platform with 'food' vendors, but it could be better.

Again, just spit-balling, this would all be researched and crowd-searched and tested. Maybe a jam-band section of sorts? let people sign up to borrow instruments and see if you get them to creatively make music.

More free-standing bar areas, with real craft beer. Maybe with silly bar games and hell, other TVs. Emulate the reasons people stay away and go to the bar instead of the park and bring it there. (flatten out the promenade club, the entire section behind the plate there, extend it a bit, raise it up so you can see, and make it a bar. Allow groups to reserve a spot in there, for free, in advance, via lottery so that everyone has a chance to plan to go there. And then just have the two 'guards' that normally check tickets just act as crowd control. 4 out, 4 in. etc.

You'd probably 'have' to sponsor this with some stupid corporate beer to pay for it, but maybe not. Hell, like Mikkeller stock it. But I want METS themed beers here. I want a polar bear wheat. A Flying Squirrel Red. I want a custom tap handle in the shape of a lightning bolt that serves Thor's Double IPA.

Augmentative Reality is the future. The MLB Ballpark app has some rudimentary nods to this, but it doesn't work, or barely works, no one talks about it and it's dumb where it does work.

but it won't be forever. invest. get a HoloLens2. Have a few kiosks with them, like the video game section for 'kids' (btw, video games are not exclusive to kids. Spots where you can play these games would be fun too. Especially games that you can compete against 'ghosts' of past performances. Get Alonso to play Mario Kart and then have people race against his ghost)

So with the AR. I dunno, there's a lot you can do with it, and you'd have to be out front with the dev for it. But let me put on the helmet and see the statcast stuff. Hell, let me do it before the game and let me SEE famous plays. You'd need an additional Shea overlay for the old stuff, but let me watch the AB that led to Endy's catch live, though the lens. Let me STAND IN AGAINST A THOR FASTBALL. This is something that you can already do, at Citi Field, if you're say..Thor. The Mets ALREADY do this against opposition as part of advance scouting.

"what's wrong with CBS? it's fine." No it ain't. The Mets are shoe-horned into the news format. Even on Limbaugh Radio there was time for the very excellent pre-pre-game show and post-post-game show with Pete McCarthy. On CBS, there is a pre-pre that is awful-awful (sponsored by the Barnaby Jones Medical Center, or something like that) and after the post-game show they are out of there as fast as possible. We need--no we DESERVE--a radio affiliate which gives us a forum to call-in and complain about double-switches and pitching changes. I'd be happy if the Mets worked it out so that there was a call-in/talk-show on the internet but that seems to be too much trouble for the Mets to consider.

Do people really want that? We have Twitter, and facebook and here and .. WFAN.

but what you're described is like, ridiculously simple. Do you want to create one? It's just live streaming a video chat. and then you can save it to a podcast for the morning. Would be even easier if it was quarantine empty stands games where we know we'd all be home to record after even Sunday afternoon games, but you could rotate hosts. Amazin' Avenue rotates 'recap person' to write the immediate post-game post and the longer post-post-game recap you could do the same thing. Just have the callers skype in. Or set up a line, I could ask Darren how he does Orange and Blue thing, which is done in that format, live with calls to a podcast stream afterwards.

I always liked hearing Pete McCarthy's show which included a guest. A 7-Line Production would be a good extension of his brand.

right, a guest might be harder to do from a say, us, standpoint. I don't know if Darren would be into such a daily type show, but Pete is already his cohost, so that transition wouldn't even be that hard.

Re: To-Do List

Keep the team on WCBS-AM.

Since Frontier Communications( my cable provider) dropped SNY, radio is my only way to experience Mets games real time. And the CBS radio signal reaches me loud and clear. The only other one was WFAN-AM and they are now otherwise occupied. New York FM stations are merely a rumor.

As a side note, I can't get ESPN radio which is no great loss, but you would think that if ESPN in based in Connecticut, their advertisers would want to reach listeners in an area of the richest county in their own state.

My priority for the team, sell it. All else pales by comparison.

has, WOR had that unfortunate side affect of leaving the Mets game on and getting into the car in the morning and hearing evil.

I haven't noticed CBS doing that as much, it seems more tame, but I have been just streaming the audio from the app via bluetooth since that's what's connected by default anyway.

You can get the MLB At Bat app on any smartphone, which includes the audio (be warned it will auto renew yearly)

or you can get strictly MLB Audio via..i think mlb.tv website but right now I think they've hidden the pricing. They ARE allowing free streaming of 2018 and 2019 though, at this current time.

Apparently it's all Alexa enabled now, (and chromecast for me) so "Alexa put on the Mets" should presumably work if you have an account.

If only that were a question of time, and it was a good thing to take care of during the extended layoff.

Unfortunately, it's a matter of taste, and I'm not sure the lockdown is going to effect that. But I certainly agree.

Re: To-Do List

I was just trying to improve my record by continuing to call for things they've already done.

That said, lowering the wall to put the pull-back back into play, while putting a handrail on top of the wall that makes it impossible to reach over and pull anything back, was counter-productive. Either pull the wall forward by at least 18" or push the handrail back at least 18".

And put a pad of sorts on that rail. It's only a matter of time before a ball ricochets hard off of it and hits a retreating outfielder in the face.

Re: To-Do List

oh, i fully support any measure that makes it easier to tell if a home run is really a home run. and handrails directly over walls runs afoul of that imperative.

here's an interesting thought:

expanding the outfield fan area to extend over the loading docks behind left field, so that there's more room for various activities/food/shops back there during the game. and of course, having a video wall with a live feed of SNY so you can keep track of what's happening while you're out of your seats.

It's funnier and more enjoyable if, as Fboy and I do, you change it to "EVERYBODY CRAP YOUR PANTS" and then commence clapping.

Re: To-Do List

I've been following this thread since it was posted and thinking of what I would do. But every time I come back to the thread, I stop at the first line.

My efforts as a Mets exec would be focused on helping the Wilpons sell the team.

It is the primary thing someone who loves the team should do. Anything else takes time and attention away from that job. It would deflect energy like Trump deflecting away from the issue of testing and focusing on extraneous things.

Anything else pales by comparison.

All those other ideas in this thread could wait to be considered by new ownership. Let them worry about the configuration of an outfield fence or the image of the scoreboard. I can't.

Expediting the sale might cost me my job as a Mets exec. But, as the last sentence of the question states, what better corporate decision could I make?

Yeah, but what if everyone in the stadium follows your advice? It would turn a day at the ballpark into a miserable experience. Have you ever considered that?

Re: To-Do List

I love how in the renovated St. Lucie park the team incorporated some of the blue and orange rectangles to recall the original Shea decorations. I would love to see that somewhere at Citi -- not as a dominant thing, but a wall somewhere in the concourse or something.

This is a good time to lay the groundwork for an all-female Mets minor league affiliate, and base them out of Scarsdale or Long Beach or the East End or something.

Just a random name thrown out there.

It seems that Coney Island has shown the effectiveness of housing ball teams as a side attraction for summer fun by the sea. So that's probably where I pulled the first two ideas from. Scarsdale is probably hardcore Yankee territory, but big-income residents+ progressive ideals probably is as fertile a spot as any to debut the She-Mets.
