=Fman99 (from the 'Fifty Years Ago' thread)]I'd say ... that those three other solo albums you mention (Ram, Plastic Ono Band, and All Things Must Pass) are the three records

I would pick from the sum total of all post Beatle albums as the three most enjoyable to me

This reminds me that we actually covered this topic a whole bunch of years ago in this forum -- in fact I believe it goes back to the predecessor of this forum as I seem to remember John Lennon fan-boy 'Paulie Cee' as part of the discussion. Anyway, the exercise was to create the last great Beatles album by culling a list from J, P, and G's (sort of) debut efforts with the result to be titled PLASTIC RAMS MUST PASS.

But that was a long time ago when many of you weren't around and, even among those who were, I'm sure no one who was remembers what was chosen or even if a consensus was ever agreed to (not that anything was ever agreed to back then). Plus we now have nifty polling features that didn't exist in chat rooms back then (it was so long ago that I think we still used a fuckin' abacus to count) so maybe now that we're looking back on 1970 albums (RAM was early '71) this will be a good time to revisit this thought exercise. Therefore your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do this all over again.

From the poll you can nominate Up to Twelve songs (based on that being more or less standard for albums at that time) that you'd choose to make up the Beatles finale that could have been had they not been hitting each other over the head with lawsuits by that point. And if there are enough different songs that get votes we can also pretend-release a 20-something track double LP as their swan song.

The songs listed are all the ones from those three albums except for

-- Cover songs. The Beatles didn't use songs written by others once they established themselves therefore this album won't either. So while George might have done a very nice version of Dylan's ‘If Not For You' it's ineligible for consideration here. We will accept co-writes (George & Bob; Paul & Linda, John & Yoko, etc.).

-- Sides Five & Six of ‘All Things' were improvisational jam session stuff that George admitted weren't really part of the album but he included at the last moment as a kind of bonus. Fine if you like listening to them but they're not going on the combined album.

-- Both Paul & John included a track that clocked in at under one minute. And I know that so was half the back side of ABBEY ROAD, but those songs went together with each other. But here, do we really need the sub-1:00 RAM (Reprise) in addition to RAM? I think not.

-- And George included two versions of ISN'T IT A PITY, one five minutes long, the other north of seven. I don't care which you prefer but we're counting votes for either as one entry.

Those conditions brings the list of choices down to a somewhat more manageable 38 songs. Nearly half of them are George/ATMP material so maybe he has an advantage here but, y'know what, that's P & J's problem for limiting him to a two song quota for all those years and leaving him with a backlog (he wrote some as early as '66). So if either Paul or John want to whine about it have them call me and I'll tell them to suck it.

Take your time to review/re-familiarize songs if you need to, we'll leave this open for a while (May 1st?). And, as always, you can pen op-eds to argue for or against certain choices in hopes of persuading others to vote for your faves, or you can just click your picks anonymously. The vote changing option is enabled so nothing is locked down until we close the poll.

I voted for:

Mother

Working Class Hero

Remember

Well Well Well

Too Many People

I'd Have You Anytime

Wah-Wah

What is Life

Awaiting on You All

All Things Must Pass

On edit: write-in for Maybe I'm Amazed

And I'm writing in Beaucoup of Blues as the special Ringo song for the album.

I don't know if that'll make a good album, but those are the songs I like.

The problem is that ATMP has so much good stuff that it dominates.

Boy, I'm going to give this some real thought. And listen to all 3 of these in their entirety, again, before I decide.

Is Edgy allowed to pick tracks from the McCartney album? I think he's breaking the rules.

That's Paul & John's problem, not ours.

Y'know, I debated over whether to suggest permitting write-in votes from either the self-titled McCartney album or any of the pre-POB John/Yoko stuff ... and then I forgot about it when I posted the poll.

I say let's allow it as long as one takes care not to click 12 choices in the poll AND submit write-ins. Each entry is limited to a dozen votes total.

And while we're on the subject, Willets brings up the topic of a write-in for Ringo. The problem there is that Mr. Starkey didn't write BEAUCOUP OF BLUES or hardly any of the stuff on his early solo efforts.

IT DON'T COME EASY, a Ringo/George co-write w/George producing, was released as a non-album single in April '71 (right around the time of RAM) so that looks to be the only Ringo entry that would fit

both the time frame and the non-cover conditions to be eligible for this project.

Re: Plastic Rams Must Pass

I included "Stardust," which may or may not be Ringo's best track on Sentimental Journey, but being arranged by Paul, I think it fit most in with the spirit of the thing.

Re: Plastic Rams Must Pass

"Beaucoup of Blues" was written for Ringo Starr, so not his composition, but not a cover. Kind of like how Paul & John wrote him a song for pretty much every Beatles album, so I say it fits. I will write in "Maybe I'm Amazed" too since I only voted for 10.

Re: Plastic Rams Must Pass

With all the wealth of these three albums, there's no way I'm putting a Ringo song in that group of 12. Sorry, Ringo, but piss off.

Re: Plastic Rams Must Pass

I went deeper than most on my selections. Tried to go 4/4/4 but there are too many great songs on All Things Must Pass to do it that way.

Side 1:

Mother

Hear Me Lord

3 Legs

Love

Monkberry Moon Delight

Let It Down

Side 2:

Long Haired Lady

Isn't It a Pity (the 5 min one)

Beware of Darkness

God

Back Seat of My Car

All Things Must Pass

Re: Plastic Rams Must Pass

Why RAM instead of MCCARTNEY? The Fab Faux have done shows where all they played was songs from McCartney, JL/POB, All Things Must Pass. Also, if you're allowing RAM (which, again, i disagree with) you should allow Ringo to have "It Don't Come Easy" which was released in April, 1971.

Ah, see LWFS already addressed it.

It was combination of that long-ago discussion we had on the predecessor of this forum and the discussion of the McCARTNEY album on the 'Fifty Years Ago' thread where I kind of dismissed

the initial Paul & John releases as 'starter' albums leaving RAM & Plastic Ono Band as more like P & J's "real" solo debuts. But you can include McCARTNEY and pre-John/POB material among

your choices.

... you should allow Ringo to have "It Don't Come Easy" which was released in April, 1971.

As mentioned above, we will allow that one as a write-in. Unfortunately I can't change the poll options at this point.

I always thought that "Well Well Well" and "Long Haired Lady" would have made a great double A side as they both have the same "well well well" line in them.
