Entertainment in the Time of the Coronavirus

Some quarantined performers are using the innernet to reach their audience while they have nothing to do. Some are shockingly tone deaf about how insincere and empty they come across and how little they have to offer without a production team around them. Some are merely shockingly tone deaf, full stop.

The Stones. I never thought I'd ask this, but ... when did Mick become the strongest part of the band?

I guess now we know why Blondie Chaplin has been touring with the band the last decade and a half. It's not that they needed to fill out their sound so much as Keith is seemingly bringing nothing to the table.

They turned down Keith's amps down a decade ago lol

Good Lord, that was weird.

I mean, if production is the thing... they've got the world's finest producers at their telephonic fingertips, right? The Roots are putting together new arrangements of other people's songs with improv instrumentation every night, and the Stones can't weave together a semi-decent four-part midtempo ballad they've been playing together for a half-century?

Also looks like Keith's divorce from alcohol isn't working out.

If I didn't know anything about the Stones, and discovered them just now for the first time, through recent videos, or recent performances, I'd have no interest in them.

I watched about 15 seconds of Elton John in his own backyard doing "I'm Still Standing," a song I always enjoyed, and turned it off. It didn't sound great to me.

So I guess the upshot here is that: Rock and Rollers approaching 80 don't sound nearly as good as they used to.

Who knew?

Well, there's certainly that. But there's also the reality of how shit everybody sounds without professional production. That goes for SNL actors trying to cut sketches in their living rooms, too.

Re: Entertainment in the Time of the Coronavirus

The Stones are slowing the pace of the songs they play live. Keith can look like he is miming at times

I've been down on Keith's guitar abilities before, but man he is legit. They ain't easy to learn

I thought the first part of "Can't you hear me Knockin" would be a breeze. No. Keith tuned to a G, E is the most common tuning. I could not work it out

For those who care the Stones "Lonesome and Blue" catches the band as they are today

My best Blondie Chaplin moment was the tour he did for David Johansen's "Here Comes the Night"

Blondie is one of a small few who can do the vintage Les Paul Goldtop justice

For what it's worth, I thought the SNL editors/graphics staff did a damn fine job trying to turn Zoom screenshots and iPhone footage into semi-professional televisual entertainment. The cast/writers? Well... that's another matter.
