Jay Hook

He was takin' a look

In Pittsburgh on a Monday night

Warmin' up

Gonna take on the Bucs

Maybe things would fin'lly go right

Well, he stepped on the mound

Put a foot on the rubber

Went into his windup

And soon we discovered that —

Jay Hook

Had put it in the books

The secret word was “win”

There'd be a party goin' on!

Jay played chicken with

Jim Hickman...

Drank vodkas with

Frank Thomas...

Scotches with

Gil Hodges...

Raisin' hell

With Gus Bell...

Oh, yeah!

Mets won

Now it's time for fun

Frolic in the

Clubhouse whirlpool

Ashburn wasn't waiting his turn

So Roger Craig climbed in, too

Jay —

Rolled some bones with —

Roadblock Jones

Chugged cheap wine with —

Clem Labine

Y'know —

Jay Hook

Rewrote unwritten rules

Goaded Charlie Neal to down

A half a quart-a booze

Jay was chillin' with Bob Miller

Maxin' with Al Jackson

Grabbed DeMerit's ferret

Feelin' up Kanehl —

Hot Rod —

Watch out!

Oh, dear

He ate Mantilla's

Quesadillas...

He made Don Zimmer

Simmer...

He grew partial to

Jim Marshall...

Zeroed in on

Cannizzaro...

Oh, my!

You bet your life that

Stengel

Back when he was

Single

Had never seen a

Thing so —

Off the Hook!

Down the way where the boys are gay

And the fog shrouds daily on the Golden Gate

They made a trade on the eastbound trip

And when I got to Flushing I made a stop

But I'm sad to say I'm not Say Hey

Haven't been for many a day

I'm wrinkled now, my hair is gray all around

It seems I really left my heart in Frisco town

In the stadium you can hear

Children cry out while in their hands they bear

Balls to sign like everything is fine

Though it's hard to envision another year

But I'm sad to say I'm not Say Hey

Haven't been for many a day

My average down, the RBI's not around

It seems I really left my bat in Frisco town

Sounds of cheering everywhere

As the summer standings swing to and fro

I must believe! Tug's heart is there

Like Alice, the Moon is where we'll go

But I'm sad to say I'm not Say Hey

Haven't been for many a day

My head is down, my fielding's not come around

It seems I really left my glove in Frisco town

Far away where the boys were gay

And the sun shined daily on the Candlestick

I was the best all the experts say

But when we reached the Series, I wasn't quick

So I'm sad to say It's not the way

I played the game for many a day

My mind's made up, don't want to just hang around

Instead I'm going to return to Frisco town

Glad to say I'm on my way

Just a blip, the radar will say

My head is high, my career's awfully sound

And I'll have a little plaque in Cooperstown.

The thoroughness of "Jay Hook" which incorporates so many of the '62 Mets makes that entry, just like the subject matter, a winner. To have a couplet of "Chugged cheap wine with Clem Labine" is brilliant.

Is there a TV reference in the Jay Hook song? If there is, I'm not seeing it somehow.

Contest rules state that your TV reference(s) should count for 30% of your vote score.

Maybe not. But it slammed the other 70%.

Mays takes me on a narrative journey, with humor; it's an EXCELLENT song choice, too, for what the author is doing here. Hook is packed with clever couplets and-- hey! pretty much all of those '62ers-- but there's not nearly as much THERE there (point of view, actual jokes). If you're going to go the empty and clever route (and Lord knows, it's a route I know well)... the jokes gotta have a little more bite to take the prize over such well-crafted competish.

Gimme the one that feels a little funnier and fuller. (Although-- mind you-- it could've used more dick jokes, mind you.)

Yeah, I went with Willie on the story/song combo.

I went with Willie as well, It was touching. Hook was also excellent and I generally look with favor on using lesser known players. I'd be pleased with a tie.

I loved that Jay Hook was an entry. I figured the finals round Mets were all gonna be Hall-of-Famers. I was actually hoping for Ed Bouchee but Hook was close enough.

The cause for the clubhouse debauchery was, in fact, that first Mets win. A Monday night in Pittsburgh. All the teammates mentioned were on the roster as of April 23, 1962.
